DearSt.Athanasius&St.FrancisParishioners:This Sunday of Advent (the third of four) is otherwise called“Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice” Sunday. The name comes from thewordsofSt.PaultothePhilippians:RejoiceintheLordalways;again,Isay,rejoice!ItwasalsoamessagethatSt.Paultookupinhisletterto the Thessalonians a few years before (which is our secondreadingthisweekendatMass):Brothersandsisters:Rejoicealways!AsChristians,Joyisourstrength.Amidturmoilandtrial,darknessand sin, illness, old age, and (yes) even death, we as Christiansshouldalwaysbeable torejoice: for theLordhaswonusavictorythrough his Son, Jesus Christ. Through his birth, his teachings, hisCross, his Resurrection, his Church, his Sacraments… Christ hasgivenusthegreatestreasonforjoy:HisMercifulLove.Advent,eventhoughwearen’trequiredtoeatfishorfast(likewedoinLent),isstillapenitentialseasonforusCatholics.(That’swhyIwearthecolorpurple.)WereflectuponourdependenceonGodandweopenourhearts tohishelp.
