MUSEUMS AS CULTURAL HUBS:e Future of Tradition

THEME

The theme, “Hubs” aims to highlight 2 key concepts:

▶ Museums as “Networks” ーsupporting collaborative partnerships with one another

▶ Museums as “Cores” ーinvigorating communities at the local level.

The sub-theme “The Future of Tradition” aims to link museums to the future whilst respecting traditions.

We look forward to discussing these timely topics with participants from all over the world.

WELCOME TO KYOTO

MUSEUMS IN KYOTO

Kyoto is home to numerous cultural facilities and museums, with a wide range of exhibits, such as Art, History, Craftworks, and Contemporary culture. Our museums maintain a good relationship with each other.

As the former imperial capital, Kyoto has more than

1,200 years of history and tradition, 1,681 Buddhist temples and 812 Shinto shrines, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. With a bustling academic center that is young at heart, it is rightly a must-see destination.

KYOTO was named “World’s Best City” in theTravel & Leisure World’s Best Awards 2015

This folding screen features a painted scene of Kyoto’s famous “Gion Festival” which has been practiced since the 9th century. This festival provides a link to Kyoto as it was 400 years ago, representing a tradition handed down through the generations (color photo left page).

The ICOM General Conference, held every three years, provides an important opportunity for ICOM members from 139 countries to share experiences, future prospects, and advance expertise and leadership in the eld of cultural heritage and museums. In 2019, this event will be hosted in a city famous for its cultural traditions: Kyoto, Japan.

As one of Japan’s iconic cultural hubs, combining traditional practices with an innovative spirit, Kyoto is an ideal venue to address the theme of this conference. By participating in ICOM Kyoto 2019, we hope you can get a avor for our museums and the communities that they represent in Kyoto, Japan.
