The Australian Book Publishers Association
1993 Book Design Awards
ISBN 0 9599796 9 7
The ABPA is committed to promoting quality
design and production in the book industry.
The Annual Book Design Awards is a major
opportunity to promote and reward designers,
publishers and production houses.
For this reason the awards and criteria
surrounding them are many and varied. They
offer ample opportunity for designers and
publishers to find a niche in which to promote
their own designers and production departments.
I strongly suggest the awards be kept in mind
for the whole year and not just remembered
when books are classified prior to entry. Similarly,
the judges' comments should be kept in mind
as they have been quite consistent over a
number of years.
If this happens we'll have an industry much
more conscious of the importance of design,
whether in total book design, or the design of
marketing campaigns . I am confident that
even within the tightest budget there is scope
for effective, bold and innovative design.
We would like to see more of it.
Some special thanks:
To Felicity Howell from the ABPA Secretariat
for handling a complex and demanding task
so well;
To George Dale, Andrew Metcalf and Rhonda
Black, our judges, for their time, experience
and considered comments;
To Charles Burfitt, Judith Curr and lan
Bowring, the members of the Design Awards
Committee;
To all our sponsors who are listed beside each
award, but in particular South bank Book for
sponsoring the printing of the catalogue which
is in full colour for the first time this year;
To the McPhersons Printing Group for the
printing of the special invitation .
To Spicers Paper for donating the stock.
Finally congratulations and many thanks to
Colin Rowan, the winner of the Joyce
Nicholson Award for the Best Designed Book,
for his design ofthis catalogue and his help
with the staging of the presentation evening.
Garry Eastman. Convenor ABPA Book Design Avvards Committee
The judges of the Book Design Awards
for 1993 are
Rhonda Black
Rhonda Black is currently enjoying a busy life
as a publishing consultant after nearly fifteen
years with Allen & Unwin, thus happily proving
that there is life after mainstream publishing.
Those years provided a wonderful array of ex
perience, both professional and personal.
Books -their content, style and readership
remain a passion .
George Dale
George Dale is the Art Director at Penguin
Books Australia where he has worked since
197 4. Prior to that he taught design at secondary
and tertiary levels for nine years. He graduated
from the then Swinburne Institute of Technology
in 1964.
Andrew Metcalf
Andrew Metcalf is an architect, a designer and a
member of the Department of Architecture at the
University of Newcastle. He has research
interests in the history of typography and is
currently setting up a private press after
collecting a variety of hot-metal and letterpress
equipment.
The judges of the Book Design Awards for 1993
were pleased to note that the awards attracted
320 entries th is year.
As ever, the most popular category was the
Expertise Events award for the best jacket design
of the year. The South bank Book award for
the best designed calendar or diary, a new
award, was also popular. It was disappointing
that there were so few entries in both the
Australian Government Printing Service
promotional material award and the University
of Queensland Press award for graduate,
postgraduate or professional books. It is hoped
that publishers and designers will look to
contributing more entries in these categories
next year. The Weldon International primary
education award attracted many more entries
than previously.
Overall, there was an impression that many of
the entries were conservative, and sometimes a
little dull, which on occasion made the choosing
of a winner difficult. It was disappointing that
many entries with wonderful covers were too
often let down by the lack ofthought applied
to internal design, especially the choice of
typography. However, many of the entries were
very pleasing, displaying competence and im
agination. Two of the award-winning books,
Marketing Concepts and Strategies and Soft
Sculpture and Beyond, were produced on
desktop systems. The sophistication and
skill shown in resolving the typographical
and design problems in these books were
excellent, showing that the size of the
budget need not affect the quality of the
design . Unfortunately, other designers using
desktop publishing showed less skill.
The judges were unable to select a winner for
the Penguin non- illustrated award, but after
much consideration commended two books.
In the Ashton Scholastic ch i ldren's illustrated
book category, it was felt that there was often
too much reliance on the illustrations in the
book, rather than thought being given to
complementary typography and layout.
A clear winner was evident in the promotional
material where careful thought, clever design
and marketing skills had been applied across
a range of products.
Although there were plentiful entries in the
diary/calendar award it was often found that,
whilst sometimes illustratively attractive,
many failed in their choice or placement of
typography.
There was some disappointment at the
number and quality of entries in some categories,
but the work of the younger designers was
refreshing, especially those entries that
challenged the rules and succeeded.

The combination of a sanserif typeface and one
column layout is very appealing . Good use is made
of white space. The leading is generous, allowing
ease of reading; the captioning is c lear and logical.
The photographs are used effective ly, providing a
nice balance on the page.

A very stylish design. Attention has been paid to
all the details and the textured effect of the images
is appealing. Text and illustrations are integrated
in a pleasing manner. An adventurous attempt to
move away from a more common 'bright and
glossy' approach.

Judges' conunents
The combination of a sanserif typeface and one
column layout is very appealing . Good use is made
of white space . The leading is generous, allowing
ease of reading; the captioning is clear and logical.
The photographs are used effectively, providing a
nice balance on the page.

A very stylish design. Attention has been paid to all
the details and the textured effect of the images is
appealing. Text and i llustrations are integrated in a
pleasing manner. An adventurous attempt to move
away from a common 'bright and glossy' approach .

Judges' comments
This design encourages the reader to engage with
the topic, and avoids being patronising . It is inviting
rather than too busy, it's clear, lively and well balanced.
Designer's comments
A conscious decision was made to make it fun and
representative of the age group. It was important
with such a book to keep the continuity.

Judges' comments
This design is much more restrained than the winning
book nevertheless the design allows a successful
integration ofthe fu ll colour illustrations, graphics
and various typographic elements.
Designer's comments
The book had to be clearly laid out as the activities
and ideas must be easily recognisable. The design
had to be co lourful and appealing without fighting
with the many pictures.

A sensitive and sophist icated handling of the ma

of graphic devices and clear typography.

Successful fulfilment of the designer's brief. The
large format allowed good use of white space.
Careful choice of typography avoids a cluttered look.
A new version of a more traditional style of design.
Designer's comments
The brief asked that the book did not look too
much like a reference book yet present factual
dry information in an interesting way.

Attractive choice of logo and type carried through
to a wide variety of promotional material. Designed
to be appealing to its audience without patronising
them whilst at the same time maintaining a
readily identifiable contemporary A ustralian feel.
Commendable breadt h to the range of materials .
D esigner's c omments
The brief was to design a logo and a range of
promotional material that would promote childrens
books that are written and illustrated by Australian

The feel was to be upmarket, c lear and easy to read
with the envelopes to be d es igned in harmony with
