How to make the bike quieter
Hi to all!
I have made my own exhaust for my tenere 660. I like the sound, its deep and powerfull... but its too loud for myneighbours. Even when I ride it slow, they think (only by sound-loudness), that I ride it (too) fast. So you can guess
what they think about it.When I ride in woods I also disturb animals and hikers, so no good there also, not aproved..
So I need to make it quieter, but I already did all I could think of... so would need any advice what I can do to fix thatissue. I need to make it quieter and try not to loose power. I already have the akrapovi wool stuffing, steel mesh, three blockages, AIS removed...
Here are some pics how the exhaust is made...
Inside-blockages:

Try off setting the holes in your baffles. In other words, don't center the holes and then staggerthem so you have little straight through passage.__________________

There are a few design ideas that you may want to consider.

Theres the two pipes going side by side where the exhaust goes out one perforated tube and into
another. In the above pic the tubes are sealed off at the end so the gas cant bypass the perforated
sections.
There are other types of baffling where the tubes pass through from one section to the other. Oftenthese ones will have extended length tubes where the gasses are forced to double back out of one
tube to get into the other one to make its way out.
I hope this helps you with your design ideas.

Try adding an elbow shaped turned down tip. It will aim the exhaust at the ground and seem quieter.

i modded an atv rac ing exhaust to the klr. had a fully open end like yours. bike ran weaker than
stock. made an end plate with enuf holes (20 at .19 dia) to add some back presure. quieter and runsstronger than stock. disclaimer: power evaluations by ear/ass dyno.

One solution for straight- through glass pack mufflers isto install turbulators. These are thin metal twists or spiralsthat push gases out against the sides of the inner muffler
perforated tubing.
This forces some of the gases - and noise into the packing.By varying the length of the turbulators, the level of noise
can be regulated.
This same principal is used to improved boiler efficiency. You can; and may, have to make your own, but here arelinks with info and photos as examples: one is a spiral,
the other, easier to make, is a zig-zag:

Another solution is a to reduce the size of the mufflerexit. It doesn't take a lot to make a difference. A large

"washer", the same OD as the exit can be installed rightat the exit. If the exit is 2", a washer ID of maybe 1-1/2"
should make a substantial difference in noise. The washerincreases back pressure a small amount, forcing gases, and
noise, into the packing.......

Excellent idea. I'm going to try that on my noisy little bike.

I made and installed a turbulator today Simply cut a piece of sheet metal, twisted it, and inserted it
into the tube ahead of the baffle. Riveted the can back together and tested it. It definitely reducedthe noise level and probably adds very little back pressure.
Thanks for the idea.

I found a thread on a Harley site where they talk about making/modding mufflers. Alot of good
information on how they are made and what they get out of the muffler with different ideas. Tons ofinformation over there.
