How to Keep Your Home Safe: Fire
8
• Do not leave burning candles lit when away • Do not leave hot stoves running when meals are completed • Do not leave hot irons or outdoor grills unattended • Do not install a deadbolt with an inside key only – this may prevent you and your family from escaping in cases of fire or other emergencies • If you smoke, ensure the element is completely put out when done • Install a range anti-‐tip bracket for the stove

How to Keep Your Home Safe: Fire
9
• Do develop a fire escape plan and make sure all family members know it. Place the plan in a central location in the home • Find two exits out or every room • Establish a meeting place outside or at a neighbors house if safe
• Never go back into a burning house/structure • Keep leaves raked, roof and gutters clean from debris as this is dry incendiary material. • Keep wood and all flammable materials such as solvents or liquids in metal containers at least 30 feet from the home. • Buy a fire blanket and portable fire extinguisher and keep near/in the kitchen since this is where most fires originate
