A Step-By-Step Tutorial on Building An Infographic with Microsoft Powerpoint
by Paul Wilson
Step 1: Open PowerPoint
Step 2: Set Your Color Scheme By
Going to “Design” and Selecting A
Slide Theme
Step 3: Click On “Slide Size”
Step 4: Set Your Graphic Size By
Clicking on “Custom Slide Size”
Note: Most infographics are 600x1100 pixels (or 6x11 inches)
Note: PowerPoint will ask if you want to Maximize or Ensure Fit. It
doesn’t matter if your slide is blank
Step 5: Delete
PowerPoint’s pre-created text boxes. They won’t help you.
Step 6: Layout your infographic
by inserting “Shapes”
Step 7: Add Your Info &
Data By Inserting
“Text Box”
Step 8: Add Related
“Icons” to your Info
Note: You can also add
“Images” but use sparingly (particularly
photographs)
Step 9: Go to “File” to save infographic as an image
Step 10: Select “Save As”
Step 11: Save as a png, jpeg, or gif
Step 12: Upload Infographic (as an image) to your Blog
PRO TIP: Custom Background
Don’t worry about using PowerPoint’s Themes. Go right to Step 4 in the
tutorial and create your customer size
Go to Pexels.com or Pixabay.com for
copyright free images and find a background you
like
Once you find an image you like add it
onto the slide by going to “Insert” and
selecting “Pictures”
You can crop your image
by clicking on it and
selecting “Format”…
…and then clicking on
“Crop”
To not make the background so
dominate you can insert a rectangle shape and cover the background
Then by right-clicking on the shape you can select “Format
Shape”
To the right a pane will open with additional options. You can click on “Fill” and play around with the “Transparency”
From that point you can jump to
Step 7 of the Tutorial and
complete your infographic
Final Note: This is a quick and simple way to create an infographic. Unlike the example, though, most infographics have more than just a couple data points. When creating your infographic be sure to make it rich with visual data and info. You should always ask yourself, “Does this infographic have enough information to add value to the online conversation around this topic?”. If you can say yes, than you have a great infographic.
