A Guerrilla is a Spanish word

describing a small group of

fighters who use surprise attacks

to defeat a stronger force.

Who Are They?

• The Zapatistas are a group of Mexicans

who support improved rights and living

conditions for Mexico’s poor & indigenous

people.

• The Zapatistas

named themselves

after Emiliano Zapata.

• 1879-1919

• Zapata fought for the

rights of native & poor

people when he was

alive.

Why 1994…?

• NAFTA went into effect.

• The Zapatistas believed NAFTA would

increase the gap between rich and poor

people in Chiapas, and all over Mexico.

• Their initial goal was to start a revolution in

all of Mexico.

• This didn’t happen.

• The Zapatistas are working

hard so that the indigenous

people of Mexico have the

help they need to improve

healthcare, housing,

education, and jobs.

Impact & Political

Outcome• Political reforms were put into

place to improve the lives of the Native Americans

• There were improvements in housing and education

• Fair division of land

• Laws to make sure Native Americans were represented in the national legislature
