Quick Search
• Quick Search enables instant searching of all elements of the Study Centre.
• Your keyword will be matched against a range of related meanings using sophisticated search technology.
• All records which contain your search term will be brought back, in relevance order.
Quick Search
Quick Search retrieves results across all seven elements of the Study Centre.
The most relevant items appear at the top of the list. Click on a link to view the
record.
Your search term and related terms are highlighted in the text.
Use the Previous and Next record buttons to move through your results.
Advanced Search
• Advanced Search allows more focused searching.
• Specify exactly which resources you want to search in – including the option to search specific reference volumes.
• Control how the search technology operates.
Choose whether to use Boolean operators or to expand your search to include variant spellings or
related meanings.

Study Units
• Study Units bring together essential information and rare documents, and encourage further research.
• Each Study Unit contains between 30-120 articles, documents and images selected for their relevance to the topic.
Find Study Units using the Topic
Tree. Click on a link to view the Study Unit you are interested in.
Each Study Unit begins with a brief
introduction.
Resources are grouped under
different headings. Click on a heading
to jump down to that section of the Study
Unit.
Highlights
Around five of the best items on each
Study Unit are selected as highlights.
Each Highlight has a brief explanatory
caption.

Reference Library
• A library of around forty respected reference volumes, including encyclopaedias, historical atlases and historiographical guides.
• All volumes can be browsed through Tables of Contents.
• An ideal launching point for further research.

The Table of Contents is organised in expandable and collapsible sections.

Journal Library
• Search cover-to-cover full text from around fifty top periodicals.
• Browse Tables of Content for each issue.
• Journals are regularly updated with new issues.
• Backfiles vary in length – some go back to 1986.
Search the full text of articles.
Choose to limit your search by date.
View a list of journals and browse by issue.
The most recent articles appear at the top of the list.
You can choose to re-sort your results in relevance order.
Most articles open as
PDF page images.
Picture Library
• Search an archive of thousands of historical images, from early woodcuts to modern news photography.
• Each image is given a detailed caption which places it in its historical context and aids searching.
Enter your search term and
click Go!
The search retrieves all
images where the captions match your
search term, with the most
relevant results at the top of the
list.
View photographs of the major events of
the twentieth century.
Words which the search engine has matched to
your keywords are highlighted in the caption.
Video Library
• View hundreds of clips from the WPA Film Library, some dating back to the end of the nineteenth century.
• Watch footage of historic events such as the signing of the Munich agreement.
• Clips can be downloaded in Real Player or Windows Media Player format.
Simply enter a keyword and click Go! Your keyword will be matched to
clip titles and captions.
KnowledgeNotes™ History Guides
• Extensive introductions to key historical topics and texts, with timelines, biographies and bibliographies.
• Topic Guides offer a thematic examination of major historical topics.
• Text Guides provide close analysis of widely studied documents and historiographical works.
Read a guide to a vital document
such as the Communist Manifesto.
Or look at the guides to important
topics such as the
Vietnam War.
Jump down to any part of the guide from the
menu.
Every History Guide includes
a detailed overview to its subject placing it in historical
context.
Many Text Guides include a link to the full text
of the original document.
Web Gateway
• Search over 2,000 of the best history resources on the Web.
• All selected Web sites must meet quality control standards.
• The gateway is regularly updated to ensure Web sites indexed remain current.
