Hearts of Gold: Top Jewellery Symbols
and their Hidden Meanings
Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, the holidays, a birthday or anniversary,
or other special occasions, jewellery is always a classic, timeless, and
thoughtful gift item. Heart-shaped knickknacks, elegant bracelets
and chains, and rings with huge rocks set in them are becoming a
common way to express love or endearment for someone.
While a lot of people love the symbols and designs in many types of
jewellery, very few know what the symbols really mean. With that,
here is a list of some top jewellery symbols and their respective
meanings.
1. Hearts
Hearts, as evidenced by the
commercialisation of the symbol during
Valentine’s Day and other celebrations,
are a symbol for love. In some settings,
it also stands for passion and charity.
If the heart is adorned with a crown on
top, it means “ruler of my heart,” while
a flaming heart or one with wings
speaks of passionate love.
2. Arrows
Cupid—the god of desire, erotic love,
attraction and affection—is known for
his signature tool, the arrow, which he
supposedly uses to make two people
fall in love with each other, provided he
does his work properly.
The arrow symbolises love, affection,
and mortality, in keeping with the
legend of the god that wields it. This
design gained popularity back in the
jewellery industry of the Victorian era,
although the angular, almost heart-
shaped arrow tip can also be considered
part of the Art Deco style.
3. Ivy
Jewellery items with ivy, often included
as green leaves, symbolises ageless and
evergreen love. This design is a
favourite support element for most
pieces as it adds character and vibrancy
to the whole design. It is also a great
substitute for oft-expensive emeralds.
If jewellery features ivy and pearls,
however, this usually means it’s a
mourning piece, as pearls are
considered representations of tears.
4. Buckles
Buckles stand for protection, victory,
authority, and binding loyalty—similar
to how belts, shoes, and other
accessories are held together by
buckles. Back in the day, these
beautifully-engraved pieces came in
different thicknesses with the belief
that the thicker the buckle looks, the
stronger the bond.
5. Butterfly
The butterfly represents the concept of
the free soul and life—as it undergoes
amazing transformations from a larva,
caterpillar, and then into a majestic,
flying creature.
Jewellery pieces are always a great way to express certain feelings
and emotions towards a special someone. The symbols and hidden
meanings truly make it a great gift for any occasion.
