Download - Heads Up January 2016
Welcome to the January edition of Heads Up, our monthly round up of regional leadership development activity.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year; 2016 finally arrived and with it a wave of new activity! The
team is busy planning events well into the next financial year, and schedules are filling up for events over the next few
months.
We are excited for the upcoming Co-Creation Network Winter Basecamp, which will be held on 20 January in
Leeds; if you registered prior to 15 January, we are looking forward to seeing you there. If you are not able to make it
to the day, we encourage you to follow the hashtag #CCNetwork on Twitter to follow live tweets from the event,
and to learn more about the Network and how Communities of Practice work.
The first of our series of Systems Leadership Laboratories will take place later this month on 27 January in Leeds.
As previously detailed in the December edition of Heads Up, these one-day workshops, delivered in partnership with
Impact4, use the work of Barry Oshry to produce a dynamic, high-impact experiential learning event. We are still
welcoming applicants for all three workshops; please see page 5 for more details on the Leadership Labs.
Our new Shadow Board programme also commences this month, as part of our Innov8 Inclusive Talent
Management work. Working in partnership with both TRL Healthcare and Finegreen Associates, the programme
welcomes 10 aspiring board leaders from each Trust; two organisations are currently confirmed as participating.
We will soon be welcoming our Mary Seacole participants from Intake 2 and Intake 3 at their Graduation Ceremony
on 27 January in Leeds. 98 graduates from the Yorkshire and Humber region will be receiving their Postgraduate
Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. Congratulations to all of our participants for their hard work.
Finally, we are delighted to announce that applications are now open for two of the National Programmes; the
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson programme, which leads to an MSc and is ideal for mid-level leaders aspiring to a
more senior role, and the Nye Bevan programme specifically for aspirant directors. Please see page 12 for more
details.
Thank you for all of your support over the past year from myself and the team, and all the best for a successful 2016!

Co-Creation Network Update The Co-Creation Network’s Winter Basecamp will be held at the Oxford Place Centre in Leeds on 20 January
2016.
The event will start at 9.30am with an opening speech from Bill Urry, Labour Councillor for Roundhay and
Lead Councillor for Homelessness and the Causes of Homelessness. Following this, new participants will be
welcomed with an introduction to the Co-Creation Network. There will be time for informal networking and
meetings for both old and new members.
Participants can look forward to sessions from Georgina Hamill and Liz Maddocks-Brown (NHS Improving
Quality Sustainable Improvement Team), as they review the Network’s aims and objectives now that it has
reached its first year.
Nadine Payne, Knowledge Project Manager at Haelo, will discuss her research in value creation in Communities
of Practice. Victoria Betton, Director at mHabitat, will host a lively interactive workshop on using social media
and the Co-Creation Network website to coalesce communities and tap global knowledge resources.
There will be time for participants to explore the use of mindfulness to bring focus and energy to the
day. Communities can meet together and explore questions and next steps throughout the day, as well
as seek advice from the Support Team or take part in informal sessions hosted by other members of the Network
who have offered to share their expertise.
You can follow the event on the day by using the hashtag #CCNetwork on Twitter.

Systems Leadership Learning Labs We increasingly need to work and lead collectively across our health and social care communities to meet the needs of the people
we serve. We talk a lot about Systems Leadership, but what does this really mean? How do we extend and develop our
leadership behaviour and mindset to influence the wider system alongside our organisational responsibilities? This Learning
Laboratory enables you to really explore how productive partnership and systems working can be developed and sustained within
your own context.
It is a dynamic, high impact, experiential learning event, in which we create a real organisational system in the room. During the
morning, we’ll experience typical power dynamics and we’ll uncover why systems leadership is often really tricky. So much seems
to get in the way – not least hierarchies, differing agendas, organisational identities and disempowering cultures. We will work
together to build a shared understanding of leading across systems and in the afternoon we will focus on translating this into
practice in your own contexts.
The Systems Leadership Learning Lab will equip you, your colleagues and partners to:
• enhance your collective leadership effectiveness
• relate to partner agencies, service users and colleagues more effectively
• jointly raise the quality of services
• together improve client and employee satisfaction
• collectively deliver better value for money
We will be holding three, one-day learning workshops in the New Year
Wednesday 27 January 2016 – Leeds – Novotel, 4 Whitehall Quay – PLEASE NOTE NEW VENUE.
Tuesday 16 February 2016 – Mercure Sheffield – St Paul’s Hotel & Spa
Friday 18 March – Mercure Hull Royal Hotel
These workshops will be particularly beneficial if you are currently working with partners across your system. We would therefore
encourage you to bring colleagues with you to the workshop so that you can learn together in this dynamic environment.
To book your place on one of these workshops, please contact Rebecca Bevington or call 07780 587183.

If you ran the NHS, how would it be more
inclusive? Turn your good ideas into action!
The NHS Leadership Academy in partnership with local
Leadership Academies, have established a Leadership
Inclusion Project. Initially, the project will scope, “the
development of interventions that promote both diverse and
inclusive leadership of the NHS and a diverse and inclusive
NHS, its workforce, service offers and models of care.”
The project is seeking the insights, expertise and first-hand
experience of as many people as possible to help with this
scoping stage and is holding a series of half-day open events
to help achieve this. Signing up to participate in these events
is a great opportunity to shape future leadership development
interventions that promote excellent, inclusive, system
leadership at a national healthcare wide level.
Ideally you will sign up to one event in Stage A and one event
in Stage B i.e. one ‘accelerated learning’ event and one
‘engagement, sense checking and sign off event’ but getting
involved in either is better than none!
Stage A
Accelerated Learning Event – an intensive session to learn as
much as possible from all those involved on the day about
what is needed, what is or could work to achieve tangible
change, what is the difference that will make the difference
and so on. Options are:
LEEDS Monday 1 February, or
LONDON Friday 5 February
Please click this link to register for the Accelerated Learning
Event. Further details on the exact venue will follow.
Stage B
Engagement, Sense Checking and Sign Off Event – a more
reflective session to critique, refine and sense check what has
come from Stage A.
Options are:
LONDON Wednesday 23 March, or
LEEDS Thursday 24 March
Registration details regarding the Engagement, Sense
Checking and Sign Off Events will be circulated in February.
If you require any further information, please contact Lynda
Lowe on:
Tel: 0161 625 7397
Email: [email protected]
Please pass this on and help us share the invitation as widely
as possible. ALL professions, staff groups, patient groups,
staff-side reps, Bands 1-9, Public Health colleagues, Allied
Health Professionals, administrators, scientists, doctors,
nurses, managers, students, apprentices, staff network
members, directors, non-executive directors, chief executives,
