VOLCANO VOCAB (HAWAIIAN STYLE)
The word volcano in the Hawiian language is Lua pele—“loo-ah peh-leh.” Lua by itself means crater, but it also means toilet! Pele means lava and is also the name of the Volcano Goddess.

One of Oahu’s must-see landmarks is Diamond Head, formed by a volcanic eruption about 300,000 years ago. Because Diamond Head resembles the back and fin of a fish, its name in Hawaiian is Le’ahi (Lae=browridge, ahi=tuna). British sailors named it Diamond Head because they thought the rock crystals they found were diamonds. If you hike to the rim of the crater, you’ll see a 360-degree view of Honolulu. Diamond Head is inactive, meaning it does not contain lava. The only active volcanoes in Hawaii are on the Big Island.
