Well December was a busy month in Hardwicke Bay with some exciting events and some great support for plans going forward. Our Christmas Dinner on the 10th Dec was a great success. The meal was fantastic and was provided by Aaron and Joanna from the Café. It was also very pleasant being served by two lovely young ladies, Phoebe and Jess. We had some fun with raffle draws, a highlight being the wonderful baskets put together by Pauline. Jim Fidge drew the ticket for the first basket and drew his own name. Well done Jim.
Our meeting the next day was my first as President and although there seems to be a lot to do we have started to develop good plans for going forward. These plans include:
Getting Council approval for us to clean up all the dead trees in the town. James May is assisting us in this and we have been provided safety vests from the council. We will not see a lot of action with this project until the hot weather is gone due to fire risk.
We are going to give the hall a paint job and many thanks to Daryl Rohde for offering assistance with a cherry picker. Daryl also donated a roof harness to the Progress Association. Thanks Daryl.
The ceiling in the Community Hall has been damaged as a result of the storms earlier this year. Daryl is also assisting us with this repair work so again thanks to Daryl.
Upgrading Security at the hall and shed.
We will be having a Family Fun Day on the 14th January and we have a team to co-ordinate this.
We will be having a Fishing Competition on the 12th March and this will be a big event. Helpers will be required for this.
Volunteers put up the new bingo sign. Looks great but we had to move Santa a little to facilitate. Thanks Ron, Jim and Ferd.
There were many other items we covered as well. We have a very active Committee with some new faces and this will see Hardwicke Bay promoted and improved for the future. I am overwhelmed at the number of people who have offered to help in any projects we have. Thanks to all.
Again I wish to communicate my focus and the important items for me for 2017 are:
Clean up the town
Improve facilities in the town
Getting people to get to know one another
Getting people to support functions as much as possible
Support local businesses
And above all, have some fun

Progress Association President’s Report...

A large number of break and enter crimes are easily preventable. By introducing
simple and inexpensive changes to your home, you
can play an active role in reducing the chances of this
happening to you. By securing your home you
significantly lower the risk of you and your family
becoming victims of crime. Burglary can have a serious
impact on families and individuals in a number of
different ways.

Meet the President...
Geoff Hampel is our Progress
Association President, he is
married to Maxine.
Geoff’s work history includes
farming, shearing, truck driving
and the meat processing
industry. Maxine has worked as
a hospital domestic, waitress,
shop assistant and housewife.
The couple are currently retired
with Geoff acting as the
chairman of ‘Big River Pork.’
The Hampels live in Murray
Bridge and own a shack in
Hardwicke Bay.
A few of Geoff and Maxine’s
likes include:
+ Spending time with their families, mixing with friends and having a good time and a laugh with them.
+ Fishing and anything to do with the sea
+ Travelling and meeting new people,
+ Seeing the Crows win!
A few of the couple’s dislikes include:
+ People trying to change our Australian values and way of life.
+ Port Adelaide FC. Now that is more Maxine than Geoff.
We asked Geoff and Maxine what they would like to see for Hardwicke Bay in the future:
To see improved town facilities including having a successful General Store. (Tick that one off the list!)
We believe we can do more to improve the facilities for families and need to have a major clean-up of the sand dunes and get rid of all the Box thorns and so on.
We would like people who live in the town full time or part time getting behind events that lead us to a better future for the town and have some fun on the way.

schnitzel for $6.00 plus we ask you bring

Hardwicke Bay is a community made up of mostly temporary residents, we need to work
together to ensure we stay safe and prevent would-be thieves from entering properties
while unoccupied. Get to know your neighbours and keep an eye out for any unusual
activity in the area. If you see anything report it to SA Police on 131 444 or Crimestop-
pers on 1800 333 000.
Some things to consider when leaving your holiday home (or your usual residence while
on holiday) include:
Ensure the house is securely locked with all windows secured.
All valuable items are out of sight
Ensure your lawn is cut and garden weeded
Ensure all perimeter fences are in good order and gates are kept closed and locked to
restrict unauthorized access to your property
Record serial numbers and descriptions of valuable items
Lock sheds and secure tools to prevent them being used to gain access to your house
Bring bins in from your street if you see them left out after collection

What’s Been Happening...
Special thanks goes to everyone who helped to make the evening a success including the new Hardwicke Bay Café and Takeaway Store owners, Aaron and Joanna, for all the hard work put in catering the dinner.
We would like to give another special thank you to KR Castlemaine for providing a large range of pork products for our Christmas Raffle. The products were fantastic and very much enjoyed by all the winners!

On Monday 8 August 1920, a ketch, the ‘Oscar Robinson’,
was blown ashore near Hardwicke Bay during rough
weather. The ship had dragged her anchor and gone
ashore four miles east of Pt Turton but luckily was held on
a sandy bottom with no damage caused. Unfortunately, it
was reported she was so high and dry it would need an
extraordinary high tide to float her. The Oscar Robinson
was built in 1883 an NSW.
During its many voyages in southern Australia, the Oscar
Robinson delivered loads including the building material for
the Kingscote School in 1907. The ketch also caught fire dur-
ing a voyage from Wool Bay in 1908, and at that time she was
carrying a load of lime and wheat to Pt Adelaide. An Adelaide
newspaper at the time described her as having ‘a somewhat
adventurous career’, having been sunk in a collision and
buffeted in other ways. She was lost at sea in 1940.

The pharmacist looked at the

me you had a prescription!”
A lady went into the pharmacy,
walked up to the pharmacist and
said, “I’d like to buy some cya-
nide.”
The pharmacist asked, “Why in
the world do you need cyanide?”
The lady replied, “I need it to
poison my husband.”
The pharmacist’s eyes got big

Final Note...
The HBPA wish to advise
residents that Committee
Member, Sue Crook, has taken
on the role of Secretary. Sue
will be taking over from Joanna
Young, who due to a busy time
at the shop and a baby on the
way, was finding it difficult to
carry out the role as she would
have liked. Joanna will be
continuing on the committee
and we would like to thank her
for the work she has done and
thank you to Sue for accepting
this important role.
