Hacking Your Sleep HabitsThe Benefits & Drawbacks to Your Preferred Sleep Position
Most people have a preferred way to position their bodies at night so they can fall asleep comfortably, but is there really an “optimal”
sleep position?
Sleeping on Your Back
Benefits:• Keeps head, neck, and spine neutral• No extra pressure on these areas• Prevents acid reflux
Drawbacks:• Tongue may block breathing tube,
causing breathlessness• Can make snoring worse
Sleeping on Your Side
Benefits:• Elongates spine to prevent neck
and back pain• Keeps airway open, reduces snoring• Prevents acid reflux
Drawbacks:• Can lead to wrinkles in face, chest• Can make breathing difficult and
cause back pain when curled up in fetal position
Sleeping on Your Stomach
Benefits:• Reduces snoring• No other known benefits, other
than possibly being comfortable!
Drawbacks:• Causes neck and back pain due
to non-neutral spine, neck turned• Puts pressure on muscles, joints• Leads to numbness, tingling
sensations
Which Position Is Best?
Sleeping on your back is best, unless you’re a snorer.
Sleeping on your side is the next best position — especially if you snore.
Sleeping on your stomach is pretty much the worst position. Sorry!
One Final Tip…Don’t assume that you have to change your sleep position if it’s comfortable and isn’t causing you any problems. Do what works best for you.
