INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING

Guidelines for authors at ISPRS congress(es) and symposia

Preparation of Camera-ready Manuscripts

Prepared by the 1992 Congress Organizing Committee for the XVII ISPRS Congress, Washing- ton-USA; Lawrence W. Fritz, Congress Director, July 1989.

PURPOSE

In the recent years the quantity of papers accepted for publications in the ISPRS Archives has increased significantly. These mandatory guidelines are provided to reduce the volume, cost of reproduction and storage space needed. Your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines is greatly appreciated by the host organizing committee for this ISPRS meeting.

The official ISPRS congress and Commission Symposia Archives contain Proceedings that are printed from author-prepared, camera-ready manuscripts. In many instances, the Proceedings are printed in advance and distributed to registrants at the meeting. The Proceedings will be printed in A4 paper size (29.4 x 21.0 cm = 11.69 x 8.27 inches) and your manuscript will be reduced 25% from the oversize Model sheet paper provided.

To assure timely and efficient printing with a consistent and easy to read format, authors must submit their manuscripts in strict conformance with these guidelines . PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PAPERS WILL BE REPRODUCED BY PHOTO-OFFSET PROCESS DIRECTLY FROM THE COPY WHICH YOU SUBMIT. There will be no opportunity for corrections or improve- ments of poorly prepared originals. The Society may omit any paper that does not conform with the specified requirements, or is not typed on the Model paper supplied with these guidelines. The instructions following are typed in the form that is required for ISPRS Archives.

KEY WORDS: Manuscript, proceedings, Archives, Typing, Camera-Ready.

1 MANUSCRIPT 1.1 Typing and Model Sheets

Each author is provided with 10 sheets of Model paper (39.6x27.9 cm=15.6~11.0 inches). Your complete paper should not ex- ceed 8 Model sheets ( =8 printed pages) in- cluding figures. Each page must be typed or output on a computer printer. If you use a dot- matrix printer, be sure to set it for near-letter quality, so that the dots overlap. Simple dot- matrix printing, where the dots are separated from one another, does not reproduce in an acceptable fashion. All text is to be single spaced, on the Model paper in 2 columns (ex- cept one wide column for the Title block and

optionally the Abstract and Key Words). Col- umns should be 52 Elite characters wide (10.8 cm), separated by a 4 character wide blank column. Only one side of each Model sheet is to be used. The reverse side must be left blank.

Light blue guidelines, which will not appear on the final printed copy, outline the typing area of the two columns. Except for the Title Block and Abstract on the first page, keep within the column guidelines. If the Model sheets do not fit into your typewriter, fold them down the center between the two col- umns. If because of spoiling you run short of

182 GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

clean Model sheets, type on a separate sheet and paste (do not tape!) the copy within the column guidelines.

Except for the headings and subheadings, the text should be typed with single spacing.

Use an electric typewriter (uniform pres- sure), with "Elite" (small: 12 characters per inch or 12 ch/25 mm) rather than "Pica" (large: 10 characters per inch or 10 ch/25 mm ) characters. A fresh black ribbon is required. (Do NOT use blue.)

For corrections, use white correction fluid or white correction tape. Avoid smears and era- sure marks; they will appear clearly on the fi- nal printed copy.

1.2 Hand lettering

Use black ink whenever it is necessary to let- ter mathematical symbols, etc., by hand.

1.3 Page Numbering

Write lightly, in nonreproducible (light) blue pencil, the author's last name and the page number, in the lower right corner of each page. DO NOT T Y P E T H E PAGE N U M B E R ON T H E M A N U S C R I P T SHEET.

1.4 Length

All accepted papers that arrive by the due date will be published in the ISPRS Archives, pro- viding they meet the following requirements: all manuscripts (with the exception of In- vited Papers) are limited to 8 single-spaced pages, including abstract, figures, tables and references. Manuscripts of ISPRS Invited Papers are limited to 16 pages. The expense for additional pages ($25 US for each addi- tional page ) must be paid for by the author (s).

2 T I T L E AND ABSTRACT BLOCK

2.1 Title

TERS without underlining, centered across the two columns, near the top of the first page of the paper. Use more than one line if you wish, but always use single spacing. Type the author (s) ' name (s) and affiliation in upper and lower case letters centered under the title. In the case of multi-authorship, group them by firm or organization. Affiliation should in- clude position (s) of the authorIs), the insti- tut ion(s) , the country(ies), and the ISPRS Commission number.

2.2 Abstract

Start with concise Abstract (limited to 150 words) which summarizes the content of the paper. The Abstract may be typed in one wide column across the whole page as shown in the beginning of these Guidelines under "PUR- POSE", or may be typed in half-page col- umns. Please add an Abstract in English if the paper is submitted in French or German.

2.3 Key Words

Leave a double line space under the Abstract. Type "Key Words:" followed by some appro- priate key words (not more than 8 ) which de- scribe your paper.

3 MAIN BODY OF T E X T

Type text single spaced, with double line spaces between paragraphs and headings. Start paragraphs flush with left margin.

3.1 Headings

MAJOR HEADINGS

Major headings or section headings are to be in capitals without underlining, centered over one column.

Subheadings

Type subheadings in upper and lower case let- ters, underlined, and placed flush left on a separate line. Bold print may be substituted fl)r underlines.

The title should appear in CAPITAL LET- Subsubheadings. Subsubheadings should

be intended 3 spaces with text following on the same line.

3.2 F o o t n o t e s

Mark footnotes in the text with an asterisk (*); use a double asterisk (**) for a second footnote on the same page. Place footnotes at bottom of the page, separated from the text above it by a horizontal line, but within the light blue guidelines.

References shall enable a librarian to supply the quoted paper/book to the reader. Refer- ences should be cited in the text, thus ( Smith, 1987b), and listed in alphabetical order in the reference section. The following arrange- ments should be used:

+ References from JOURNALS: Smith, J., 1987a. Close range photogram- metry for analyzing distressed trees. Pho- togrammetria, 42 ( 1 ): 47-56.

Names of journals can be abbreviated ac- cording to the "International List of Peri- odical Tit le Word Abbreviations". In case of doubt, write names in full.

3.4 I l l u s t r a t i o n s

3.4.1 P l acemen t . Figures and tables may be

either one or two columns in width. While fig- ures and tables are usually aligned horizon- tally on the page, large figures and tables sometimes need to be turned on their sides. If you must turn a figure or table sideways, please be sure that the top is always on the left-hand side of the page.

3.4.2 Capt ions . All captions should be typed in upper and lower case directly beneath the illustration. Use single spacing if they use more than one line, within one column for 10.8 cm wide figures or across two columns for 22.5 cm wide figures.

3.4.3 L i n e D r a w i n g s . For the best repro- duction of line drawings, the original draw- ings should be made on white paper and care- fully mounted in position within the text on the Model sheet (use rubber cement or pres- sure sensitive wax, not glue, mucilage or scotch tape). Line drawings can also be made di- rectly on the Model paper. Use black ink. Make lines wide enough and lettering large enough to remain legible after reduction, i.e., at least as large as a typewritten capital letter. Cap- tions should be typed directly under each illustration.

Do not use blueprints, or any low contrast photocopying process; they give poor results after reproduction. The only choices available to you are: an original in black ink or a good high contrast black and white glossy photo- graph of the original (reduced and mounted to 1- or 2-column width).

3.4.4 P h o t o g r a p h s . Do not paste original photographs on manuscript pages. Do not submit continuous-tone photos. Convert the photos to halftone (screened to 85 lines per inch) paper prints (reproductions of your originals with the half-tone dots needed for reproduction). Paste the half-tone prints in place on the manuscript page. Type the cap- tion directly under photos.

Reproduction of color illustrations is avail- able to authors at cost. Authors interested in publishing color illustrations should contact

the ISPRS Organizing Committee directly. If fl)ur-col()r separations are available, they should accompany the manuscript.

For publications where the emphasis is on color, special arrangements may be made with the ISPRS Organizing Committee for cover- ing all or part of the reproduction costs.

3.4.5 Tables. Tables should be typed di- rectly on the Model paper or pasted in place. Each table should have a number and title.

3.4.6 Copyr igh t . If your article contains any copyrighted illustrations or imagery, please include a statement of copyright such as c SPOT image Copyright 19xx (fill in year) CNES. It is the author's responsibility to ob- tain any necessary copyright permission.

3.5 Equations, Symbols and Units

3.5.1 Equa t i ons . Type the equations or write them in black ink. Equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the pa- per. The equation number is enclosed in pa-

rentheses and placed flush right. Leave two blank lines before and after equations.

3.5.2 Symbols and Units . Use the SI (Systeme lnternationale) [;nits and Sym- bols. Unusual characters or symbols may be hand-drawn with a thin pen and black ink and should be explained in a list of nomenclature.

4 TRANSMITTAL AND INFORMATION

4.1 Transmittal

Mail an original and two copies of the paper to the address supplied with these guidelines. Adherence to the specified due date for papers is essential. Papers not r e c e i v e d by the due date will be omitted from the ISPRS Ar- chives. Submit papers as early as possible be- fore the due date to reduce the editorial bottleneck.

4.2 Further Information
