Sub-system redundancy
A major difference to Public Operators
• An outage of a radio base station (BTS) in a Public Network hurts
• In GSM-R it can impact train operation - so very critical
• Sub-systems in GSM-R are fully redundant
Some measures to improve Availability
• redundant power modules
• redundant cooling units
• redundant interfaces
• …
• uninterrupted operation at module exchange

Release 4 Core
Upcoming GSM-R Core Network is the evolution of
legacy TDM based Core to Packet Based Core –
from Release 99 to Release 4
The Bearer Independent Core Network architecture is
defined by 3GPP in Release 4 specifications and since long widely deployed in public mobile
networks around the world
‘Layered Architecture’ :
Separation of the control and signalling plane (Call
Server) from the bearer plane (Media Gateway)
Release 4 is fully compliant with GSM-R baselines
and EIRENE specifactions

Interference Mitigation - improved GSM-R
coverage
Interferences mitigated by improved radio coverage
• For spurious emissions from outside of the R-GSM band improved radio
coverage will improve C/I (carrier over interferer ratio)
Implementation
• Increased power levels on existing radio sites can, to a certain extent,
improve radio coverage
– However some radio sites already emitting at max power
– Cab radios could be saturated by too high power
• New radio sites (BTS) to be inserted in addition to existing ones
– Requires revised radio design
• Improved antenna (e.g. narrower beam / higher gain) can improve C/I
– Useful in some cases

Interference Mitigation – Tuning of radio
engineering parameters
• Example: If interference is disturbing some operation such as a
handover HO, this HO can be advanced/delayed by adjustment of the
system parameters of the concerned radio cells
• Requires careful study by radio engineering expert in each case
• Since radio environment changes over time, continuous performance
observation and, when no longer satisfactory, required adjustments

Today’s activities towards Next Generation
• GSM-R Core architecture Rel 4 is introduced
• Stepwise introduction of IP …
• …now available on several interfaces interconnecting GSM-R subsystems,
e.g. Train Controller system
• ETCS over GPRS (i.e. over Packet Switching PS) is a stepping stone for…
• …much better utilisation of radio resources
• …making ETCS bearer independent
• ER-GSM, enhancement of the European UIC Frequency Band for GSM-R
by 3MHz, i.e. 75%
• GSM-R Industry Group committed to support all activities to specify the
Next Generation … • …with special focus on Seamless Migration from GSM-R to NG
