Make-up is all aboutchoosing the rightshades of colour

cosmetics. Learning toselect them according to

skin colour and tone isimportant. Whether

you have fair, wheatish, olive, brown or darkskin, choosingthe r ight

colours is so important.

Go with your skin toneThe natural skin tone is

most important whileselecting foundations.Ideally, it should enhanceyour natural colour, or eventone it down, when the skincolour is reddish, forinstance. Try to buy onethat is closest to your skincolour as possible. Facepowder may be translu-cent, or of the same shadeas the foundation. If youwish to tone down a tan, select a powder that is oneshade lighter, but in thesame colour tone. However,I feel that translucent pow-der works quite well. For avery fair ivory skin, go forbeige with a rosy tiny. Ifthe complexion is fair, butsallow (yellowish), avoidpink tones and go for beigeor biscuit. For reddish com-plexion, a softer beige willhelp. Olive complexionslook better with brownishbeige, while for brown anddark skins, try out coloursin natural brown tones.

For contouring, like cre-ating cheek hollows, selecta foundation that is one ortwo shades darker thanyour normal foundation, but in the same colour tone.Keep the principle in mindthat dark colours help thearea recede, while lightcolours emphasise.

For your lips

Where lips are concerned,a dark complexion looksgood in vibrant colours.Avoid very pale colours. Ifthe skin is fair, avoid verydark colours. For a browncomplexion, go for warmearthy colours, like coral, wine, plum, strawberry orburgundy. A dark pink orrose-red would look goodtoo. Even brick-red maysuit. One can also mix twocolours to create the desir-able effect.

Blusher coloursIt need not match lip

colour exactly, but it should

be co-ordinated. Keep tothe same colour tone. Forexample, if you have wornan orange toned lipstick, avoid pink blush on. Forfair skin, try pinks andreds. If you have a sallowskin, avoid orange. Forolive complexions, colourslike rose, coral, russet, amber, copper are flatter-ing, while plum, wine, bronze and burgundy maysuit darker complexions.

For bright eyesFor eye colours, if the skin

is fair, a brown eyebrowpencil may be more suit-able than black. Darkerskins can take black eye-brow pencil. For daytimemake-up too, I find that agrey or brown may be bet-ter than black. The samegoes for eyeliner. Brownand black eyeliners or eyepencils usually go well withIndian skin tones. Or, trycharcoal (dark grey). Thesecolours match the naturaleye and eyelash colours.

When it comes to eyeshadow, two or three shades

SHAHNAZ HUSAIN

of the same colour can helpto enhance the shape of theeyes. For a natural look, shades of the same colourtone should be used. Brownshadow may be applied onthe lids and a darker brownin the crease of the eyes. Avery light brown, or beige, may be used as highlight.Of course, one can also useother colours. For brownskin and brown eyes mauveand navy blue can be com-bined, with silver highlight. For dark skin, a combina-tion of gold and dark char-coal grey or brown can becombined.

The different coloursshould blend into a whole.Beauty, after all, is a totalimpact.BEAUTY
