PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,
Welcome back everyone! I hope that everybody was able to enjoy a relaxing school holiday break with family and friends. It has been
wonderful to see all of the students now feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the school term; in fact many of them
mentioned that they are really pleased to be back at school which is always great to hear. I often mention that I really
enjoy the beginning of each school term as I take sheer delight in listening and participating in the sharing of stories
as to what occurred during the break such as going on family days away or holidays, to the movies etc – for me this
always is very exciting and interesting.
What’s happened around our school during the holidays?
The school holidays are always an opportune time to complete various tasks throughout the school as tradespeople
can work uninterrupted. These holidays we had the Year 5/6 end of the main corridor painted and wow, what a
difference that has made to this area of the school. The other half of the corridor will be painted during the
September holidays. These works have been made possible as a result of families contributing to the Building Fund –
once again, a sincere thank you for your contribution as you can see it does make a difference!
We also had a major facilities audit conducted during the break which is extremely pleasing as this is the first step
towards our school obtaining additional maintenance funds. Gratefully the report has arrived and we have
commenced the process of perusing and adding items which we believe have been omitted. This will then be sent to
the Department for final analysis and approval and hopefully it will be funded in full. At this stage I am yet to be
informed as to when the final approval will be forwarded – I‟ll keep everyone informed!
New building Update
Unfortunately progress with our new building has been quite slow at the moment as the rain has severely interrupted
proceedings. During the holidays blinds were installed, the finishing touches for the concreting also occurred and the
area has been cleared. Internally the building is complete however we are waiting for the installation of the inter-
active whiteboards and the arrival of some new furniture and lockers for the children to place their bags.
Obviously the builders are currently concentrating on the external components and I am hoping that by the time the
newsletter reaches home the landscaping would have commenced, the additional drain installed near the end of the
building and preparation is well and truly underway for the asphalting – lets all keep our fingers crossed! And I never
thought I would say or write this; let‟s hope the rain stays away for a few weeks! Naturally the delay has also pushed
back the anticipated hand over date to, at this stage, approximately the beginning of September.
Information and Communication Technology
(Computer) Update
It certainly has been wonderful to see the sheer joy,
excitement and buzz in the classrooms which have
commenced using our school‟s new iPads. As mentioned
previously I firmly believe these are the learning tools of
the 21st Century and have the capability of making an
enormous difference to education provision. To date the
children have used them to view such things as the solar
system, videos and stories, create cartoon strips involving taking photographs, using text
etc, recording various items and play learning games such as scrabble.
Mr. Chapman has put in an incredible amount of work to ensure the iPads were ready
for the beginning of the term in which everyone is extremely grateful – well done and
thank you Mr. Chapman! Mr. Chapman has also been busy organising opportunities
for the children to Skype with other children and schools throughout the world. We look forward to
sharing some of these learning experiences in due course.
New Out of School Hours Care Staff
This term we welcome two new Out of School Hours Care staff members, Grace and
Chris (refer to the photograph). The change in staff has come about as our previous
coordinator Victoria is unable to keep working at our school as the hours clash with
her university timetable and Danika has decided to investigate other employment
opportunities. On behalf of our school community I would like to thank Victoria and
Danika for all of their work with our program and wish them well. It has been
wonderful that Victoria was able to work all of last week in order to ensure Grace and
Chris had a thorough handover.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)
Robotics Program
I am extremely pleased to report that at the last School Council meeting, approval was granted to
purchase an additional 8 sets of Lego Mindstorm Robotics kits which bring our school total to 10;
and I‟m also extremely grateful to the Van Den Bergen family for donating an additional set hence
increasing our total to 11 – thank you Gabrielle and Paul, your generosity is amazing and really
appreciated!
The educational benefits of robotics are immense as the children are required to develop the skills of programming,
reasoning, logical thinking, planning, collaboration, trial and error, risk taking etc (to name just a few). The “robots”
are controlled by the NXT which is effectively the brain and is an intelligent computer controlled brick. The children
will be taught how to be in command of and manipulate the robots to complete various tasks. Currently Mr. Mc
Donald is leading a process of selecting the children to partake in the program which will be implemented by Mr.
Price on Fridays during session 3 and 4. I know the children are eagerly waiting for the program to commence and I
cannot wait to see the high level of learning this additional program offers our children. The plan is to commence
with 22 students (2 per robot) who will become our school experts and then they will be responsible for training
additional children next term and then this process will continue so a large number of children will develop the
expertise. In the overall hope is that the kits become another valuable classroom learning tool. We look forward to
sharing some additional Robotics news in weeks to come.
Chess Program
The Semester Two chess program commenced today which is facilitated by renowned coach Tim Broome who has a
magnitude of experience as a coach and player and coordinated by Mr. Price. It was wonderful to see the children
thoroughly enjoy their lesson and either continue to learn how to play the game or commence learning a new game
which has a magnitude of educational benefits. The program is scheduled for 14 weeks throughout the semester at a
cost of $84. If you are interested in your child attending please see Pam or Jenny in the office who will provide you
with a notice.
School Production It is that time of the school year where are prepared
for our annual school production. This year it is
based on the Chinese legend Monkey King which
an Australiana twist. Since the beginning of Term
Two the Year 5/6 children have been working with
artist Sabrina Chou to develop various dances,
develop a story line, been learning the traditional
story with Mrs. Sia in LOTE classes and the rest of the
classes are about to commence organising their parts in the play. The production will
be held on Monday 5th September at Crossways (Springvale Rd Burwood)
commencing at 7 pm so please ensure this date and time is in your diary. As more
information becomes available it will be circulated amongst our school community.
John Monash Science School Program
I am extremely proud to announce that four students in Level 4 (Eshitha, Nikita, Yijie and Vinuri)
have been selected to participate in a very interesting and new initiative across the City of Monash where a
select few schools will be working with the John Monash Science School in a program where the children will be
encouraged to further develop and explore their understanding of science. The children will work closely with a Year
10 buddy (and Miss. Dale) where they will complete a joint project. The first session was held yesterday
(Wednesday) and will run every second Wednesday this term and culminate with a Science Fair. Congratulations to
Eshitha, Nikita, Yijie and Vinuri for being selected and thank you to Miss. Dale for agreeing to oversee this fantastic
new initiative - we look forward to hearing more about the project in the coming weeks.
Enrolments
I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2012, that we are taking enrolments
for the Prep Year and look forward to welcoming many new students to our school. It is important that this process is
completed during the next month or two, with all completed forms returned as soon as possible, allowing us to begin
planning for the 2012 school year. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of
their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school
website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au . School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also
upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

Glen Waverley Secondary College Performance
On Monday the Year 5/6 students attended Glen Waverley Secondary College to view this year‟s performance which
is based on Disney‟s Mulan. The students were raving about the stage show which they thoroughly enjoyed and were
very impressed to see a number of our ex-students on stage. For those who may be interested in attending a
performance they are being held on July 26th, 27
th, 28
th, 29

grounds) commencing at 7 pm and tickets cost $15. For further information contact the school on 8805 6700.
End of Term Assembly Awards
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, as a school community it is very important that we acknowledge and
celebrate the wonderful achievements of our staff, parents and students. One way of accomplishing this is by
participating in award ceremonies throughout the year and also at the end of each term. Our end of term award is
provided by the Kiwanis Club of Waverley and we are extremely grateful for their continued support to our school in
the form of the Terrific Kids program. The program is a student recognition program that promotes character
development, self-esteem, and perseverance. At our school the teachers nominate one student from each area of the
school – Preps, 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6.
