Fibre as an ingredient is slowly but surely gaining a prominent place in the West. Japan is the pre-eminent country, especially
in the consumption of soluble fibres. China is the developing giant, initially as a source of supply. The rise of ‘whole grain’ in
the US and increasing recognition of the importance of fibre in Europe are driving increased consumption. However, there is
still some way to go before fibre consumption reaches recommended levels.
GIRACT Objectives of this study Geneva, Switzerland
To quantify the current market demand and to forecast volumes and trends to 2017 for the end products and the ‘ingredients’ (both soluble and insoluble fibres)
To understand the choice – the “why” and “why not” – for the use of a fibre, and to identify potential novel fibre ingredient alternatives based on in-depth user interviews
To identify the ingredient producers and to assess their strategies
To establish the supply scenario of the selected ingredients

GIRACT 1. Introduction Geneva, Switzerland
Fibre as an ingredient is slowly but surely gaining a prominent place in the
West. Japan is the pre-eminent country, especially in the consumption of
soluble fibres. China is the developing giant, initially as a source of supply.
The rise of ‘whole-grain’ in the US and increasing recognition of the
importance of fibre in Europe are driving increased consumption.
However, there is still some way to go before fibre consumption reaches
recommended levels.
Several factors such as legislative hurdles, an erosion in consumer trust, and a general stagnation in the supplement sector,
are creating a challenging environment for manufacturers and end-users. Following its earlier studies on both soluble and
insoluble fibres, Giract continues to monitor these sectors and now proposes a new market study based on in-house
information and extensive interviews with suppliers, actual/potential users, legislators and industry experts. The report
covers the use as a fibre ingredient and not, for example, bran integral in wheat flour or as a cellulose source in ruminant
feed. Gums used for their hydrocolloid function are not considered. However, hydrolysed gums used for specific fibre
function are included.
As a key player or a company wishing to learn more about these important ingredients, this study serves a dual purpose for
you to help explore and exploit these high-profile markets and to make full use of an in-depth understanding of the market
forces to develop your overall business in this sector.
