How to raise a reader…
Firstly, if you want to raise a reader, be a reader. Now is the time to make
space for time to read yourself, read with your child and share your
favourite books together. We know reading with babies is a necessity but it
is just as important to read with your children as they become emerging and
independent readers. If you want your child to be excited about reading,
you should be too.
Here are just some of the benefits.
The physical closeness that reading together brings builds a positive
association to books;
Reading expands your child’s world;
Reading a diversity of books will prepare them for life in a diverse
world;
Books can go everywhere;
Reading sophisticated books together promotes a richer vocabulary
and awareness of deeper ideas;
Reading and talking about other people and situations in books helps
to develop your child’s empathy towards other people.
Don’t miss out on reading non-fiction material. Some reluctant readers are
far more inspired by reading facts, discovering new information and
exploring topics.
The mobile library visits our school fortnightly
and students from Yr. 2-7 can borrow. This
service means we can extend what is on offer for
our students. Check out our Facebook site for
more ideas and suggested books to start reading
with our child tonight.

Pupil Free Day Friday 10th May
Next Friday, our teachers will join other teachers from the Torrens Valley Partnership of schools for professional
learning. The focus of the learning will be planning for literacy improvement, with an emphasis on writing. These
days are valuable as teachers have the opportunity to work with other teachers who teach the same year levels,
plan together and moderate writing samples.
The Pines Nature Play opens!
Thank you to the Parents and Friends group who donated $17 000 from funds raised to complete the project. We
are planning an official opening later this term to celebrate the beautiful addition to our school. A second stage
of development is planned for the space next to the sandpit but we’ll need to fundraise more money.

The Pines
The Pines Nature Play opens!
Thank you to the families and staff members who joined the Pines Plant Up last Sunday 28th April.
Together we planted 500 native trees and grasses in record time. The plants are all indigenous to our area.
In time we hope to create a beautiful habitat for butterflies, lizards, birds, and other insects and to be able
to harvest seeds to grow seedlings as part of the enterprise gardening program our Years 5-7 students run.
All classes have played in the space this week and made recommendations on how to use the space safely
and respectfully. Some guidelines include
Let others cross the rope bridge before you go.
Be careful where you play.
Take care of the tress so they can grow.
Respect others using the space and share what’s there.
Conserve water-it’s precious
Tissues
It’s that time of year again and tissues are in high demand.
If you are able to donate a box of tissues to your classroom, it would be much
appreciated

What tales could be told if walls really did have ears? During this unique theatre performance that incorporates
live performance and multimedia, audience members will weave in and out of historic buildings to discover the
tales of Nairne. Listen to the haunting tones of the didgeridoo; smell the dank, dark history in cellars where doors
creak and stones echo; soak in the panoramic visual delights of building projections; be delighted by songs of
ragamuffin children; touch and taste the culinary delights of a bygone era. Get your map and be prepared for
