Fwd. Anchor Windlass / Capstan
Location/Operations
In this training module we will look at the following piece of Deck Machinery: • Forward Anchor Windlass/CapstanWe will also take a look at how it operates, the location of it’s HPU (where applicable), and other information important to know about this piece of equipment.

Capstan

When the clutch on the capstan engages the windlass, the motor can now heave (or veer) the anchor.
The part of the windlass that “grabs” the chain links is called the “wildcat.”
Deck MachineryForward Windlass/Capstan
The Pelican Hook/Turnbuckle Chain Stopper secures the anchor in place at all times when the anchor is not in use. It provides a positive means of securing the anchor system when the windlass is disengaged from the capstan.
Deck MachineryForward Windlass/Capstan
Riding Pawl:• Guides chain over deck to hawse pipe• Prevents anchor from slipping, accidental
release in “down” position• Allows for anchor paying out in “up” position.
“Up” Positon – for releasing or paying out anchor
“Down” Position – for retrieving/securing anchor

3. Anchor Brake Tight (Clockwise)
4. Call wheelhouse: Turn on HPU

5. Disengage Clutch (Clockwise)
5(a). May have to “jog” capstan with the controls to free the clutch pawls from the capstan dogs. This will allow capstan to move up from clutch pawls (Picture above shows clutch (wildcat) disengaged)

6. You may now operate controls to capstan to heave lines. Up/Down on controls changes direction capstan turns. Allows you to change lead of line pull, or heave/veer the line you are working. Be safe!

Day to Day Configuration
For our normal, day to day operations we will leave the Windlass/Capstan set up for Capstan operations:• Riding pawl secured
(down)• Chain Stopper on• Anchor Brake tight• Wildcat disengaged
When informed by the wheelhouse watch to prepare for anchoring, the following needs to be done with the Windlass/Capstan:
Deck MachineryForward Windlass/Capstan
Anchoring Operations(Preparing to Anchor)
1. Wheelhouse watch turns on HPU
2. Windlass Brake tight (CW)

3. Engage clutch (CCW)
3(a). As you engage clutch, jog capstan to line up dogs and pawls .

4. Remove chain stopper

5. Raise the stopper on Riding Pawl
6. Contact wheelhouse watch, and if they give you the ok, release the windlass brake (CCW), and lower the anchor to the water’s edge using the windlass motor. This is called “walking out the anchor.”
Forward Windlass/Capstan
7. Once anchor is walked out, tighten the windlass brake (CW).

8. Now, disengage the clutch. The anchor will now be hanging free of the hawse pipe, held only by the windlass brake.

(Preparing to Anchor)
9. Stand-by at the windlass brake: The anchor is now ready to “let go.” Inform the wheelhouse the anchor is ready to let go, and have them turn off the HPU. Make sure all personnel on foredeck are out of the way of the anchor chains path.

(Anchoring)
1. When Pilot gives the order to “let go the anchor,” release the brake (CCW) until the chain starts to pay out. Do not let the chain run uncontrolled. Feather the brake to slow the speed of pay-out so chain does not pile up on bottom. Pay out amount of chain specified by Pilot. It’s marked every 50 feet up to the first 300 feet. Don’t let out all the chain!!! (451 feet). Engage brake when proper amount of chain is out.
2. With brake set on windlass, Pilot will use astern momentum to set anchor. Foredeck crew will provide feedback to Pilot regarding the strain and lead of the anchor chain. Once vessel has settled and it is determined the anchor is holding, turn the HPU back on and do the following:

3. Engage Clutch 4. Lower Stopper on Riding Pawl
5. Release Brake

6. Slowly veer chain using windlass motor, allowing a chain link to catch on stopper (May have to push on stopper slightly with hand).
7. As the chain locks on the Riding Pawl stopper, pay out enough chain to put a slight belly in between the Riding Pawl and the windlass.

8. Set the brake 9. Disengage Clutch 10. Turn off HPU
Note: Do not put the Pelican Hook/Turnbuckle chain stopper on when the anchor is deployed!

Anchoring Operations(Heaving Anchor)
1. Pilot will inform you they are ready to heave anchor: Turns on HPU
2. Engage Clutch 3. Release Brake
4. Riding Pawl Down (Should already be down)
5. Charge a hose line to rinse muck from chain as it comes into hawse pipe. You can use on-ship fire pump or White System. Whatever floats your boat…

6. You are now ready to heave the anchor. Let the Pilot know the windlass is ready, and if they give you the o.k., start heaving.
7. Always have a spotter inform the Pilot the direction the chain is leading (Dead ahead, to port, to starboard, straight up/down), and relative strain (light, moderate, heavy)
8. Spotter needs to keep Pilot informed of chain lead and strain the entire time. Also needs to look for anchor. When it reaches surface, inform Pilot, and have person on windlass controls slow down the rate of heave. Now, slowly bring anchor all the way into pocket. DO NOT JAMB IT INTO POCKET WITH WINDLASS MOTOR!
9. Once anchor is in the pocket let the Pilot know “anchor home.”
