July 2017 Risen Savior Lutheran Church
Praise to God in heav’n above;
Praises for unending love;
Praise the Lord’s unselfish
deeds; Praise to God who knows
our needs.
Praise to God with trumpet
sound; Praises, dancing all
around;
Praises, with the timbrel ring;
Praises with the pipe and string.
Praise to God with sounding brass; Praises, with the
cymbal clash;
Ev’rything that lives and breathes, Sing the songs that
never cease.
-Paraphrase of Psalm 150 by John Ylvisaker
Dear Risen Savior Community,
Pam Sullivan was recently telling me about her uncle, John
Ylvisaker, who died back in March. I knew he had written and
composed the beloved hymn, I Was There to Hear Your Borning
Cry, but I was not aware he had paraphrased and put all 150
psalms to music (see example above). He also wrote and
composed hundreds of other hymns as well, being renowned for
his theological astuteness.
At the end of April, Pam and her family drove to the Chapel on
the Wartburg College campus in Waverly, Iowa for her uncle
John’s memorial service, which he had planned in advance. It
was filled with much of his own music, all to the glory of God.

we accomplished
much. We have still a

It was a wonderful day
and we had a beautiful
time. Warren and

That got me thinking. As faithful Christians, it is a good idea to
think about and make plans for our own funerals or memorial
services in advance. As the old saying goes, “There are two
things certain in this life, death and taxes!” Yes, one day we all
will die. We have been reminded of that too much lately from
the four deaths in our own congregation since Easter…RIP…
Dorothy Murphy, Nelson Hornick, Betty Longest, and Sharon
Redders. As Christians, however, we have hope. We know we
will be resurrected as was our Lord. Our funeral services always
witness to that fact. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the
life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and
everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” – John
11:25-26
To help us do the task of planning for the inevitable, we will hold
a “Getting Your End-of-Life Affairs in Order” workshop at the
church on Wednesday, July 26, at 10 am in the church Kitchen.
Although this may not sound like something you’d like to think
about, it is far better to plan ahead than burden our loved ones
later when they are dealing with their grief. Plus, doing this
together you know we will have some fun with it! And of course,
there will be some food to share as well! What a gift Christian
community is!
In life, in death, we are the Lord’s. Thanks be to God.
Pr. Jeanie

Food Bank Pantry Report
Reporting May 2017 Activity
The LOTC Pantry client load was up considerably in May. The Pantry provided meals for 817 individuals in 213 households. First time clients numbered 34 while 179 were repeat clients. Those served included 63 children 5 years of age or under, 209 children ages 6 thru 17, 99 individuals 60 years old or older, and 138 disabled people. Of the client households served, 95 were "Female Head of Household."
In May, the Pantry received 4,906 pounds of food from TEFAP (the federal government's commodities program), 2,500 pounds from the Associated Churches Food Bank Network, and 229 pounds from the partner churches. We purchased an additional 1,346 pounds of food at a cost of $217.73. The 20 volunteers donated 248 hours of their time in May.
Some of the LOTC volunteers have "retired" recently. To be
certain sufficient help is available to meet the needs of their clients, the Pantry must fill these volunteer slots. Anyone who is interested and available to volunteer a day or two a week can call Phyllis at 260-486-6478 or 260-615-1683.
We need additional volunteers, on a one-time basis, to help with the annual "deep cleaning" necessary to ensure compliance with Board of Health regulations. Again, if you are available to help with this call Phyllis.
Finally, the pantry floor coverings are in bad shape and in need of replacement. The Pantry is looking for help funding these repairs and help with installation. If you can help with either please call Jack Davis at 260-485-2332.
As always, the LOTC Pantry thanks you for your continued support of this ministry. Your generosity makes it all possible.

This year Worship at the Lake will be held on Sunday, July
23, 10:45 AM, at Keikionga Shores close to the Buit ’s
home at 5319 Arrowhead Pass.
Driving from the church, take Jefferson Blvd. to Liberty Mills
Road and turn right. When you see the sign for Keikionga
Shores on your right, turn right, and stay right, driving around
the lake. You will see our big white tent set up in a grassy area
on the right-hand side of the road! The Buit’s house is the
second one down from where the tent will be set up, if you have
food to drop off. (Everyone is invited to bring a side or dessert
to share!) After worship we will be cooking out in the Buit’s back
yard, using their restrooms and swimming off their pier! Bring
your lawn chairs, sunglasses, towels, fishing gear, canoes, or
whatever else you may need for a lovely summer outing. There
are plenty of shade trees for those who enjoy sitting and
watching!
For those unable to attend Worship at the Lake, we will hold
a regular 9 AM service at the church, as well.

Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
Charged times...
In her June column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reflects on serving the neighbor in politically charged times. She reminds us that “active participation in public life and the duty of government to care for its people, especially the most vulnerable, have been part of the Lutheran movement since its beginning.” To read the full article, please click here.
