26 YEARS OF DOING GOOD:
PETI TAYLOR MEMORIAL FUND
Kids and teens lounging in the area set aside for
them near the childrens department just know
they like the vibe -- bar stools gathered around
high, gray-topped tables and comfy, low-to-the-
ground chairs. They dont know that the money
that bought the furnishings came from censorship
in a roundabout way.
A memorial fund in the name of Peti Taylor,
founder and first president of what was then called
Friends of the Stanislaus County Free Library
now Friends of the Modesto Library -- paid to
furnish the teen hangout. After her death in
September 1983, Taylors friends and family
raised money for a fund that would provide annual
events during Library Week: mimes, skits, essay
contests, story-telling, musical entertainment. Thishas continued for 26 years. But now the fund is
about tapped out. So, administrators spent the last
$1,500 on the teen area hangout and the spring
2011 event.
Taylor started the Friends in the mid-1970s,
according to group records, because of the threat
of censorship of books offered by the library.
Joan Patterson, who is on the board of theStanislaus County Library Foundation, was friends
with Peti, short for Petika, when they were
students at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Coincidentally, the two women found themselves
years later living in Modesto.

Patterson didnt move to the area until 1981, but said with a laugh that
she knew Taylor got on her really high horse when there wereworries about censorship at the library.
Taylors friend Sylvia Evens talks in a letter about how Taylor and
others worked to bring the Friends group to life:
These are the things we did, but the atmosphere in which it all
happened was pure Peti, and it is this very atmosphere warm,
informal, noncompetitive, death on stuffed shirts and parliamentarians
that makes being a Friend of the Library one of lifes joys.
Fittingly, those terms also describe the teen hangout paid for by Peti
Taylors memorial fund.

A FRIEND OF THE FRIENDS MOVES
Charles Teval, the Stanislaus County Library manager who is the liaison with Friends of theModesto Library, is taking a new position at the library and will be working out of Ceres.
Its hard to say goodbye to this man whose generous nature is coupled with a calm demeanor.Charles was the go-to guy as the Friends worked to get The Little Shop going a year ago. Heunlocked the library early one May morning so volunteers could move the books for the book sale.
And, even he would admit that he makes a mean Abe Lincoln, as illustrated during a June eventhonoring our 16th president. It seems Charles will do just about anything if it helps the library.
And yet, he owes his library career to a suggestion.
Charles was thinking about what to do with his history degree from the University of Washingtonwhen a friend urged him to get a masters degree in library science.
It sure beat the years it would take to fashion a career in history. So, thats what he did, leading to afirst job in Stockton as head of what used to be the Southeast branch. In December 1999, he took ajob in Champaign, Ill., a natural for the native of Galesburg, Ill. Love brought him back to the WestCoast and in January 2001 he started working at the Modesto library on the reference desk.
Now, just short of 10 years later, hes heading to Ceres to manage operations at all branches butModesto.
Charles speaks warmly of the staff, volunteers and Friends with whom hes worked over the years. He points out the many ways Friends of the Library groups help: fund raising, performing outreachthat keeps libraries in the public eye and political actions to spread the word about library issues.
He says he sees libraries increasingly becoming a community focal point, more of a place forpeople to gather. Thats obvious when one sees the parents and kids at storytime, residentsgathered at book club or the healthy crowds that turn out at special events such as those connectedwith Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times.
Despite the growth in popularity of e-readers and audio books, or the constant drumming of thedeath knell for publishing, Charles thinks books will be around for a long time. Theres a certainamount of attraction to the physical book, he says.
And, so the Friends say goodbye to Charles with thanks for all hes done. But keep your eyespeeled. Although hell be in Ceres, Charles says he wont be a stranger to the Modesto library. There could be sightings, he says, blue eyes twinkling.
And the Winner Is..
