Fraternity holds theKey to Democracy

Prem Kumar ChumberEditor-in-Chief: Ambedkar Times

Babasaheb Dr B.R Ambedkar reiterated that liberty, equality and fraternity were the social foundationsof a democratic system of governance. While pre-senting the draft of the constitution in the Con-stituent Assembly on November 25th, 1949, hecautioned the house that mere political freedomwill not help India remain free for long. To makeour freedom last forever he laid emphasis on thesocial roots of political democracy in India. Theroad to social democracy lies through fraternity.Fraternity instils the feelings of unity, compassionand equality among the stakeholders of a demo-cratic setup that in turn provides the solid base forthe emergence of true liberty - liberty to do whatone wants to do with a gaze on its social sustain-ability as well as without encroaching upon thesimilar rights of the fellow citizens.

Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, the trinity for-mula of instituting social democracy in independ-ent India, coupled with Educate, Agitate, Organiseaimed at what Babasaheb Dr B.R Ambedkar calledannihilation of caste from the social soil of India.Caste, in his firm views, was/is anti-nation. It pre-cludes the emergence of democratic process of so-cial bonding while dividing the society intomutually antagonistic groups with repulsionagainst each other. Caste sought loyalty of itsmembers to strictly prohibit social interactionswith the members of the other caste(s) placed atthe lowest rung of the hierarchical caste scale.Babasaheb DR. B. R. Ambedkar wanted his peopleto be educated to agitate against such a pernicioussystem of caste based social exclusion. The agi-tated people will organize themselves into a strongsocial force to democratically seeking equal rightsin the state. It is in this crucial context that theseeds of fraternity would start sprouting slowly inan inclusive social living to provide solid base ofsocial democracy in India for the longevity of itshard earned political democracy.

The recent most sinister us happenings inKathua and Unnao in the states of J&K and UttarPradesh in India have shaken the world that howlow humanity can fall in its own eyes. Such inhu-man acts perpetrated on the innocent girls and inthe case of Unnao the subsequent brutal killing ofthe hapless father of the rape victim speak vol-umes of hatred and violence prevalent in Indian so-ciety currently. Yet another equally disturbingcommunal trend that has been becoming an al-most a routine happening is the vandalization ofthe statutes of Babasaheb Dr B.R Ambedkar.Babasaheb Dr.B.R Ambedkar is now not only con-fined to the privileged list of top statesmen ofIndia. His illustrious persona has entered into thefront row of most intelligent and lovable personal-ities in the World. It is high time to follow his givenpath of leaving caste behind and to embrace hismost sought after principle of fraternity to over-come the current crisis of gender violence andcaste conflicts and rabid acts of communal flare up.
