The primary intent of the Community IPPE is to facilitate students’ continuing professional development in the context of the community pharmacy practice setting. Through structured activities and assignments, students will build upon knowledge and skills developed in the first two years of the didactic curriculum and the introductory hospital pharmacy practice experience. Students will continue to explore the concepts of professionalism and shared accountabilities for health care outcomes; formulate a personal philosophy of and approach to professional practice; expand drug and disease knowledge; and develop practical, critical thinking and life-long learning skills. This experience seeks to provide students with direct exposure to the dynamics of the community pharmacy workplace and to guide them to a realistic assessment of the challenges and opportunities that exist therein.
DESIRED COURSE OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES:
Activities of the community practice focus on clarifying distinguishing characteristics of community pharmacy practice and developing fundamental skills necessary to practice effectively in the community pharmacy setting. This experience will emphasize Understanding the scope of community pharmacy practice meeting individual patient needs and public health needs of the community

Non-prescription or prescription medications and medical devices and
• Understanding and managing operational aspects of the practice • Demonstrating mature and professional attitudes, habits and behaviors
DESCRIPTION OF TEACHING/LEARNING METHODS
• Experiential learning: applying knowledge, skills and attitudes learned in the classroom to patient care practice.
• Self-directed learning: students will engage with course content by independent work and selected course assignments.
RECOMMENDED LEARNING RESOURCES
• Students must have internet access and a UST email account • The Experiential Education Manual available on the school’s website at
http://pharmacy.ust.edu/programs/the-pharmd/office-of-experiential-education/experiential-education-manual. REQUIRED MATERIALS
• Short lab coat with UST name badge • Rx Preceptor at www.rxpreceptor.com is the rotation management software
system to track all pharmacy rotations and associated information. • Preceptors may require and/or recommend additional materials for their
rotations. • Students are expected to communicate with the preceptor regarding such
requirements prior to the rotation start date.
EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
• To receive full credit for this course, students are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled rotation activities; arrive on time; and remain until required activities have been completed or they are dismissed by their preceptor. It is expected that students will come to the rotation site with an open mind and respectful demeanor.

• Student preparedness for topic discussions, patient case discussions, etc. is a critical element in this course. • The faculty and staff consider the preceptor-student relationship as collegial
and respectful. As more experienced, professional colleagues, preceptors generally view themselves as mentors in the student’s professional development. Students should expect preceptors to communicate expectations and instructions clearly and concisely.
• Students should also expect preceptors to provide them with relevant resources, activities, experiences and feedback to facilitate success in the curriculum and in practice. Preceptors are fully committed to fulfilling this responsibility and will work to ensure that each student has the opportunity to be successful. In return, preceptors expect students to behave in a professional, responsible, and ethical manner; demonstrate a positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning, and respect for themselves and others; be prepared for each session; be flexible and be accountable for their assigned responsibilities.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Students will work with preceptors to complete activities and assignments which will enable them to accomplish the objectives by the end of the rotation. Preceptors may utilize a learning contract and rotation calendar to organize the experience, to clearly communicate expectations, and to account for student requirements. Student projects are to be detailed by the preceptor, but it is expected that during the rotation the student will complete the activities described on the preceptor checklist / sign-off LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY All assignments must be submitted by the designated deadline. Ramifications for late assignments will be at the discretion of the preceptor.

The course is a 2 credit hour course and consists of a total of 30 hours of pharmaceutical industry training in a pre-approved site. This course gives students opportunities to incorporate skills and competencies learned in the classroom into their professional practice. This training module aims to provide the students with the basic skills needed in the field of pharmaceutical industry. Through it is not feasible to make sure that the student/trainee acquire all practical abilities, the student will gain appreciation for pharmaceutical industry and its vast career options. Many of these skills will be addressed previously in the academic program in the lectures and laboratory of pharmaceutical technology. Students will polish their acquired skills and gain an overview on the real-life prospects of industry. The students will also develop professionalism, judgment, and skills needed to function in this setting. The students will observe and discuss the many roles of the pharmacist in the industry and participate in active learning to reinforce learning objectives. Course objectives: The objectives of this training are to provide pharmacy students with an opportunity to: 1. Get an insight on the layout and different processes carried out in pharmaceutical industry. 2. Practice in a professional manner during all interactions with pharmaceutical industry personnel 3. Learn, modify and apply skills involved in the various aspects of pharmaceutical industry.

Ability Outcomes: At the end of this training module, the student shall have the following abilities:
1. List the activities that the pharmacist performs in the field of pharmaceutical industry.
2. Explain the basic layout of a pharmaceutical plant. 3. Identify the type of records utilized at the site. 4. Observe the different aspects of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good
Laboratory Practice (GLP). 5. Gain a prospective on the process of raw materials purchasing, quality control
test, and dispensing. 6. Identify the different processes involved in the production of different
pharmaceuticals. 7. Determine the different requirements for the packaging and storage of finished
products. 8. Outline the different procedures of quality control, quality assurance, and
validation. 9. Identify the different techniques and instruments employed in the research and
development (R&D) and quality control (QC) departments. 10. Students will demonstrate a high standard of professional behavior (i.e., adhering
to established work schedule, minimizing absences, respecting fellow trainees and facility workers)
11. Demonstrate effective communication skills in response to preceptors and site workers.
Each student is required to:
• Attend the scheduled debriefing session at the beginning of the training. This session is mandatory and critical to meeting the course objectives
• Complete a total of 30 hours of pharmaceutical industry training at a designated plant. The training should cover all of plant departments.
• Submit a training notebook at the end of the training reflecting the whole training experience in a daily report format.
• Perform a presentation describing his training experience. • Complete and submit all evaluation forms to the course co-coordinator on or
before the due date specified. • Behave in a professional manner at all times during the course of their rotation.
Students are also expected to wear appropriate, professional attire suitable to their experiential site

Students are expected to be punctual and to adhere to the scheduled times arranged with the site coordinator. If for any reason the student is not able to fulfill this commitment the site coordinator is to be contacted and alternative arrangements are to be made to complete the course requirements. Guidelines:
• Industrial pharmacy training is hosted by local pharmaceutical industry. Keep in mind that your attitude and interaction affect the image of your school and future training agreements with these factories. Follow the regulations of the establishments and remember that these businesses are investing a lot of effort in your training.
• Dress and act professionally. • Be attentive to what you are told and interact positively. Reading the theoretical
material prior to visits is always a must-do practice. • Every student should have a notebook for the training experience. This notebook
should be available for inspection by instructors upon request and will be graded.
