Mustvee is the home of followers of vedifferent confessions. If you nd the shrinesrepresenting all these confessions and get aglimpse of their interior, you have been luckyto experience a rich cultural heritage unlikelyto be found in such a form in any other place inEstonia. The Russian Old Believers (starovero) havebeen living on the west shore of Lake Peipusfor about three centuries. Construction ofprayer houses in the area began in the 18thcentury. The old believers have been able tomaintain their unique culture and avoidassimilation – this applies both to theirlanguage, culture and religious afliation. They do not recognise the church reforms

introduced by the Russian patriarch Nikonneither in liturgy nor in rituals. In Estonia thereare currently eleven communities of OldBelievers.

In 1734, a paper mill using recyclingtechnology began to work in Räpina. Looking atthe red-brick main building of the Räpina paperfactory, we can imagine old paper masterscompleting their tasks here about 300 yearsago, laying the foundations for the long anddistinguished history of the present company.A fascinating view opens up over the pond tothe majestic main building of the Räpina Manor, known as the Sillapää Castle (built in years1836-1847). From 1923 to 1924, it housed theagricultural class of the local secondary

school, serving as the basis for the RäpinaSchool of Horticulture. The park surrounding the castle is one of therichest in species among similar parks with itswell-maintained trees and bushes – dividedbetween the English park, the French park andthe forest park. Here you can also nd the white-columned gazebo known as the Kissing Temple.According to local folklore, couples that havepledged their love to each other under the pillarsof the Temple will stay together for the rest oftheir life.

Podmotsa village is located on the border ofEstonia, which is also the border of theEuropean Union. Russia is just one hundredmeters across the water. This is the placewhere the Seto people have lived since ancienttimes – on the border of two religions, between two countries. When the border between Estonia and Russiawas still open, the priest from Kulje Church inRussia and local villagers used to come toPodmotsa chapel (tsässon) to celebrateWhitsunday. The beginning of celebrationswas marked by the arrival of crosses andicons, which were carried across the bay on a

boat or raft. During Whitsunday the tsässon isdecorated with young birch trees and peoplecoming to the mass bring eggs painted yellowwith birch leaves. The eggs are later eaten onthe tombs of the local cemetery together withsmoked sh, pies and sõir, the traditional Setocurd cheese – a tradition stretching back to thedistant past. The meal symbolises the connec-tion between the immediate and extendedfamily in spite of the location here or there, onthe boundary between life and death. Beingburied in the home cemetery with parents andrelatives is natural for people in Podmotsa tothis day.

The Onion Route area offers visitors a richvariety of cultural experience. Besides beingthe home of the Russian Old Believers, it's alsothe place to get acquainted with the Estonianpeasant culture and the Baltic-German manorculture. The latter is well represented by themagnicent Alatskivi Castle. The Alatskivi Castle is located on the easternborder of Estonia, which is also the externalborder of the European Union. The fairy-tale

castle, completed in 1885, houses variousdisplays which introduce the culture and historyof the Lake Peipus region. The castle wasdesigned after the model of the British Royalresidence, Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Thelocal Baron Arved von Nolcken built the castleas a sign of love and in honour of his dear wifeJosephine and the castle was home to his familyfor twenty years. Currently it accommodates avisitors' centre, a museum and a restaurant.

Süvahavva village, with less than ftyresidents, lies on both sides of the river. A fewhundred metres away you can nd the mostbeautiful sandstone outcroppings and cavesof the Võhandu River. The Viia water mill, which is located on the shore, was built in theperiod of 1900-1915. The old mill building hasbeen renovated and now accommodates theVillage Hall.

The wool factory with the oldest equipment inEstonia still operates in the white stone building. Here you can see how yarn is made from wool.It is also possible to buy woollen products andother local handicraft from Villakalli Puut. Nearthe village you can nd the Süvahavva NatureFarm, where over 40 species and varieties oftea and herbs are grown.

Obinitsa is an old Seto village where thecontinuity of village life has never beeninterrupted, stretching back to over onethousand years. Time and changes have lefttheir marks on buildings in the village and itssurrounding area. Here you can nd a 1500-year-old burial place,a czarist-era church completed in the 1950s, atsässon restored in the 21st century, a Soviet-era apar tment building and productionbuildings in the centre of the state farm. The

schoolhouse, which was completed in 1963,also houses the Obinitsa Village Centre. On theshore slope of the reservoir stands theMonument of the Singing Mother of the SetoPeople.Time has battered the people of Obinitsa morethan it has pampered them, but the Seto leelo(an ancient polyphonic singing belonging to theUNESCO's world heritage list), rich art of textilesand jewellery, and traditional Seto food, arevalued and honoured to this day.

On a September night in 1353, beautiful musicresounded from the empty chapel of thestronghold, unearthly candlelight ickeredthrough the windows and the people of thestronghold saw a white cross oating in thechapel.Four months later, the situation had notchanged and everybody visiting the chapelcould witness the miracle. On the Pope'sorder, Vastseliina was declared a sacred placewhere numerous pilgrims got their sinsredeemed. The blind could see again, the deafcould hear again, and the fame of Neuhausen(Vastseliina in German) castle spread.

According to old legends, a traveller here canmeet the Black Rider, who has incidentallycome to inspect his premises on the moonlitnight, or hear the prophecy of the virgins buriedin the cellar under the tower. In the late hours ofthe night, you can come across a beautiful deadvirgin. And sometimes, you may even get ataste of the wonder honey from the bees in thecastle tower – a honey that cures all diseases. Now you can go back in time, visiting numerousdisplays in the former Piiri Inn (located in thecurrent main building) and climb to the top ofthe stronghold tower.

The Road Museum is located in the Varbusepostal station that dates back to 1863, andwas once a stable for 33 horses and servedthe regular mail route between Tartu andVõru. The road between Tartu and Võru ispart of the trade and military route with anexciting history; a road that once connectedPskov and Tartu. In the middle of the 19thcentury, postal carriages began travelling thatroad and a network of postal stations and innswas established. That is why the road iscalled the Postal Road. The Sangaste Castle has evolved into a visitingmanor that introduces the life and work of the“Count of Rye”, Friedrich Georg Magnus vonBerg, and the breeding of rye in general. ForEstonians, rye has meant daily bread forgenerations and it has been used here as abread grain for more than a thousand years.130 years ago, as a result of original breedingwork, the Count of Sangaste managed todevelop a new variety of winter rye called

"Sangaste". It is the oldest known variety of ryestill in production. The Count of Sangaste was a prominent manwhose behaviour set him apart from othernoblemen of the time: for example, he preferredsimple peasant food. The Count's grandsonsstill remember his simple diet: grits porridge, skimmed sour milk, and salted herring. Insummertime, he would always walk aroundwearing traditional peasant leather shoes.

Valga – one town, two countries

The sphere of inuence of the town of Valgalocated on the Estonian-Latvian borderreaches the bilingual culture space of twocountries. The legend describing the divisionof the town between the two countries saysthat in old Livonia, Valga developed as asingle town. When the republics of Latvia andEstonia were formed, it was impossible todecide which country the town shouldbecome part of. The border issue wasresolved in 1920 by the English colonelTallents, who apparently had been treated toa week-long reception in Estonia, then

another week-long reception with the Latvians.Tallents is said to have cast the sword, whichdivided the town in half on a map – one side forEstonians and the other side for Latvians.Today, Valga-Valka is like a single town thatcannot t within the borders of one country.Hence, there is hardly a visitor who has notposed for a picture beside the border posts. Trystanding with one foot in Estonia, the other footin Latvia, holding ('ice cream' in Estonian)jäätisin one hand and ('ice cream' insaldejumsLatvian) in the other.

The young man opened his umbrella andhugged the girl. They kissed for a long time.Their love reached the skies. The girl wishedthat it would never end.
