background and aims
Microsystems allow the sensitive and cost-effective detection
of many biological and chemical cues. The small size and ver-
satility of such systems offer the potential for rapid integration
in the food production and processing market. The FoodMicro-
Systems Project aims to develop strategies that make analytical
microsystems more widely available to the food sector.
approach
FoodMicroSystems is an FP7 Support Action. Its main goal is
to promote the implementation of microsystems and smart
miniaturized systems in the food sector by improving coopera-
tion between the suppliers and users of microsystems in the
interests of food/beverage quality and safety.
The project has the following specific objectives: To improve the coordination of national and EU
programs for the development of food applications To facilitate cooperation across the value chain,
from research to the industrialization of smart systems
in the food sector To promote industrial technology take-up actions
in the food sector To develop roadmaps linking applications and
technologies To promote international cooperation
results
There are many opportunities to apply microsystems in the
food sector, offering benefits to consumers, society and both
the food industry and the technology providers. Microsystems
can help to make our food better and safer, and can provide
solutions that improve convenience, shelf life and freshness.
This increases the sustainability of the food industry and pro-
vides opportunities for product innovations and greater com-
petitiveness.
More promotion is needed to support the integration of mi-
crosystems in the food sector. The food industry and the de-
velopers of microsystems represent two specialist areas and
there is a need to stimulate collaboration and the exchange
of information between them. Without adequate support pro-
grams, it is unlikely that the demands of the food industry
will be understood and adopted by microsystems developers.
The food processing industry is price-sensitive, so innovations
will only be adopted when their benefits are proven and dem-
onstrated. The implementation of programs that support
the commercialization of successful applications will help to
address this challenge and will demonstrate the potential of
microsystems within the food sector through real business
cases.
The findings of this project are complemented by four technol-
ogy roadmaps representing the meat, dairy, beverage, and
fruit/vegetable sectors. These roadmaps unite the demands
of the food sector and the technological innovations of the
microsystems providers, and provide detailed plans for the
development of the most promising microsystems and their
applications in the food industry.
