GuatemalanCuisine

DuringtheMayanciviliza2on,na2veslivedthroughoutCentralAmericaandgrewmaize(corn)astheirstaplecrop.Inaddi2on,theMayaateamaranth,ahighproteingrain.

GuatemalaremainedunderSpanishrulefrom1524to1821.TypicalSpanishdishes,suchasenchiladas,guacamole,tamales,andtor2llas,beganmakingtheirwayintotheGuatemalandiet.

OthercountriesandtheircultureshavealsoaffectedtheGuatemalandiet,includingtheChinese.MostGuatemalanci;esandtownshaveatleastoneChineserestaurant.

Inthelate1800sandearly1900s,bananaandcoffeeplanta;onswereestablished.SugarcanebecameanothersuccessfulagriculturalcropbytheendofWorldWarII.
