WINNING SPINS
RELEASED THIS PAST SUMMER,Two Men With the Blues proved as delight-
ful as fans might expect from a pairing ofWillie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. The countrymusic legend, who turned 75 in April, long agodisplayed a comfort in the jazz world; in fact, one of his best-selling recordings, 1978’sStardust, featured the longhaired Texas “outlaw”singing jazz standards with strings. Marsalis,47, a redoubtable trumpet player and scion ofone of New Orleans’ most respected musicalfamilies, has few rivals when it comes to playingtraditional jazz as it rolled out of the Big Easy.
These musical icons came together for acouple of nights at Lincoln Center in NewYork City in January 2007, the results ofwhich are captured live on Two Men With theBlues. Nelson brought along harmonica aceMickey Raphael, but the rest of the bandcomprises Marsalis’ able sidemen: saxophon-ist Walter Blanding, pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer AliJackson. The pairing of Nelson’s well-livedin, conversational croon with a top-flight jazzband comes out a winner, as the musicianschase honky-tonk blues with a shot ofBourbon Street rhythm and brass.
The set spotlights traditional favorites, starting out with a laid-back yet sprightlyread of Jimmy Reed’s “Bright Lights BigCity.” Nelson likely can relate to the lyrics, his hangdog vocals full of woeful humor as healternately rues and celebrates the life hesings about. The theme is explored again onNelson’s own “Night Life,” albeit in a darkercontext. Marsalis truly shines on the intro tothe tune, which has become something of astandard itself. Accompanied solely byHenriquez’s woody bass, the trumpeter givesa discourse on the history of New Orleans jazz, his blues-drenched growls, smears and slursreviving Buddy Bolden and Louis Armstrong.
The band boots into overdrive with a joyousjump through Louis Jordan’s “Caldonia.”Nelson’s guitar playing on his trusty “Trigger”remains as distinctive as his singing, and heproduces a sound that is at once eloquent andas raw as untreated pine. A lovely read of“Stardust” begins with the bridge, à laSatchmo’s famed rendition. Nelson brings aneffortless mastery to the tune, at once blitheand melancholy, while Blanding recalls thelyrical grace of Lester Young. But then it’sMarsalis’ turn, and he expertly tips a lip toLouis with his stuttering, good-humored solo, commenting on, rather than imitating thegreat Armstrong.
Henriquez’s walking bass sets the tone fora slinky stroll down an infamous thorough-fare on the W.C. Handy classic “Basin StreetBlues,” the horns playing games of call-and-response with Raphael’s harmonica beforeNelson takes Trigger out for a DjangoReinhard-inspired trot. Marsalis blows asmile-inducing solo that tells you all you needto know about this regional art form in a fewbars. “Now ain’t you glad you came with me,down the Mississippi,” Nelson sings at thesong’s conclusion, to which we can onlyanswer, “oh, hell yeah.”
The group similarly conjures the taste ofpo’boys and jambalaya with its read of theCrescent City staple “My Bucket’s Got a Holein It.” In a rare vocal turn, Marsalis sings averse in an engaging manner that hardlytrumps his trumpet virtuosity, but certainlybeats the hell out of his rapping on his 2007small-ensemble recording From the Plantationto the Penitentiary.
Nelson sounds particularly at home on aread of “Ain’t Nobody’s Business,” a tunethat surely resonates with his outlaw personaas a renowned lover of weed and shunner ofthe IRS. Marsalis, too, seems to be enjoyinghimself here, on his outstanding solo as wellas another brief turn at the vocal mike. LikeNelson, he too has forged his own path, oftencourting controversy for his outspoken viewson jazz and race and his stewardship of Jazzat the Lincoln Center. And whether jazzlovers embrace or reject him, no one can denyhis impact on the industry over nearly 30years, his outsize instrumental gifts or hisstatus as a keeper of the flame.
The Wynton Marsalis Quintet willperform Jan. 22 at the Arsht Center, and at the Kravis Center with the Jazzat Lincoln Center Orchestra Jan. 28.

NESTOR TORRES: ONE FOR ALLby Bobby Ramirez
“MY MUSIC IS FOR ALL PEOPLE,”says pop-jazz flutist Nestor Torres, whomakes clear that this principal has been aguiding light throughout his career. And withhard work and determination, Torres hasgained worldwide appeal, numerous acclama-tions and a Latin Grammy, as well.
Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Torresbegan playing drums at age five and decidedto take up the flute at 12. After his familyrelocated to New York City, he studied atMannes School of Music and later at BerkleeCollege of Music and the New EnglandConservatory of Music in Boston.
“With the help of my father, I was intro-duced to Cuban music,” he relates. “Duringthe late 1970s, I began playing with manyAfro-Cuban charanga orchestras in NYC. Itwas a great experience and influenced mystyle of playing.”
In 1981, Torres would leave New YorkCity to make his home in Miami. “I hated thecold weather, but I also felt a sense of search-ing for my musical calling that I was not feel-ing in New York,” he says.
Torres' recordings have primarily focusedon smooth jazz. Unlike his powerful live per-formances, most of his albums are laced withsimplistic sounds and melodies and employ acommercial approach produced in part bycomputer-keyboard sequencers and drummachines.
“It is great to play live, but making arecord with ‘live’ musicians is extremely costly as opposed to producing a CD withsequencers,” he explains. “Plus, my goal wasto expose my music to a wider audience; thesmooth jazz sound was and still is an accept-able format that enabled my music to beheard by a broader audience.”
Torres is not a “jazz” musician by nature.Still, he possesses special characteristics thatallow his music to flourish, especially withinthe framework of Latin jazz, including: anacute lyrical awareness that comes from clas-sical training, great technical dexterity, andan extraordinary percussive approach thatcomes from his experiences with charangadance orchestras.
Torres’ distinctive physical antics on-stage contribute greatly to the visual compo-nent of his performance. His movementsrelate to the natural act of playing the fluteand help to establish narrative and emotion—not just for his audience, but for the musi-cians sharing the stage with him, who areinspired to greater creative heights.
“These movements are part of my per-sona and have always come naturally. It is myunique way of reaching out to my audienceand creating an enthusiastic visual environ-ment that firmly conveys the joy of mymusic,” he says.
Not even a potentially crippling 1990 boatcrash could keep Torres down for long; aftera grueling recovery process, he returned tothe studio and concert stage, and continues tothrill audiences with his energetic performances.
Torres’ latest CD, Nouveau Latino, hasbeen nominated for a Grammy Award forBest Latin Jazz Album of 2008. Returningthe artist to his charanga roots, it features aninstrumental collection of popular Afro-Cuban dance grooves mainly from the 1970s.
For close to 30 years now, Torres has con-tributed to the cultural well-being of hisadopted community. His flute continues tospread good cheer and provide the music thatkeeps Miami dancing.
Nestor Torres will perform at theLyric Theatre on January 10 and willalso be among the artists paying tributeto Machito and Tito Puente on January16 at the Arsht Center.
