in 1942 , all construction materials had to be conser ved for the war effor t. Because timber was the main material available, several form of engineered wood were developed. the war time methods of prefabrication were used by builders to erect millions of tract homes.

The Nagasaki bomb ended Wor ld War II and was the beginning of individual freedom and prosperity for Americans. A hard-earned reward for years of collective sacrifice. Eventually two-thirds of all American families were home owners.

In the years after the war, couples who could not afford families during the Great Depression made up for lost time; the mood was now optimistic. During the war unemployment ended and the economy greatly expanded; afterwards the country experienced vigorous economic growth until the 1970s.

Housing demands were created by the return of the American soldiers and the brief of modern living was set.
The East Coast continued to work with traditional styles while the West Coast experimented more freely that had a twentieth-century typology.

The Case Study House (CSH) program was initiated by Ar ts & Architecture magazine in 1945. The thir ty-six designs of the program featured low-cost, experimental modern prototypes during the years of America’s post-Wor ld War II building boom.
The CSH program had thought-out plans compared to a “cookie cutter” approach.

BA at University of Southern California 1934. Several months emplyment with Richard neutra. Critic and guest lecturer at University of Southern California, Yale & other universities. in private practice since 1936, pioneering the development of housing in steel construction. Moved his office from los Angeles to Tiburon near San Francisco 1953.
