Appendix: 3 VICE CHANCELLOR’S REPORT
Dr. Pritam Singh Hon’ble Chief Guest of the function, respected Dr.
S. M. Seth, Chancellor of Poornima University, Members of PJF Advisory
Board, Members of Board of Management, Members of Academic
Council, Distinguished guests, Faculty, recipients of degree and their
parents and dear students.
Now I present before you a report of activities, academic and other
accomplishments, during the last academic year by Poornima University.
This year also we have marched ahead keeping in mind that in life there is
“No short cut to hard work and no gain without pains”.
The promoters of Poornima Group, the largest educational group in
Rajasthan, after the success of their earlier opened 4 colleges came up
with their new venture, Poornima University in the year 2012. The
University presently hasfive schools namely School of Engineering and
Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, School of Management,
School of Commerce, and School of Basic and applied sciences and it
also has a Centre for Research. The state of the art researchfacilities
and modern amenities like well stock libraries along with project centers
create a conducive environment for teaching - learning process. The
University is committed to bring about perceptible change in society with
its innovative and equitable practices and systems.
Presently the University is running 5 branches of Engineering
namely Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Besides
these branches of engineering, the University is also offering B. Arch.,
BCA, BBA, B. Com., MBA, M. Tech. &Ph.D courses. The University is also
providing dual degrees like B.Tech. + M.Tech., B.Tech. + MBA, Presently
the University has a total student strength of 2000. In an effort to bring in
better quality in its education and cross culturalexposure, the Poornima
University has joined hands with the top global universities by entering into
collaborations with them. Towards this end, The University has singed
MoUs with Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok and Han yang
University, South Korea, the two International organizations of high repute,
for student/ faculty exchange, study abroad opportunities, holding joint
international conferences and seminars and many other activities.
During this year, the University inducted 30 new well qualified
faculty members. Nearly all the departments now have an improved
teacher – student ratio, which is essential to impart quality education.
Adequate infrastructure is considered to be the backbone of any
organization. This is especially true for a new and developing
organization. To keep pace with the increasing demand of infrastructure,
several new blocks have been started and completed in the previous year.
The three air conditioned seminar halls with a capacity of around 1000
have not only been completed but are being used with an efficiency of
more than 80 percent, which is unique.
This year, the new addition in academic courses like Professional
Certificate Courses for engineering students and Special Syllabus
Programs for B. Com, BBA and MBA students have made significant
contribution for real life learning of students. The PCC and SSP courses
are conducted with the help of industry experts so as to give students the
latest market oriented skills and knowledge. Aptitude and
campusrecruitment trainings were also added in regular curriculum so as
to prepare the students for facing the recruitment process.
Our regularniche programs and activities have given strength in
overall learning of students. Besides the syllabus, which is designed by
academic, industry and consulting experts, the special programs include
revision classes, make up classes, support classes, extra teaching time,
continuous evaluation system, orientation programs, tutor system,
brushing up classes, tutorial classes, self-help groups, survey camps, and
mentor classes etc. These give the Poornima University student an extra
edge over others.
Our most ambitious program of higher studies and research has
also come a long way in a very short spanof time with lot of success. The
University has established a very high reputation for our master’s and
doctoral programs in engineering and management due to emphasis on
hard core academics and research oriented activities. With allocation of
good amount of budget for research activities by the Management of the
University, some notable works have been achieved like establishment of
number of research labs viz. Solar Energy Lab, Automation Lab, VLSI
and Advance Communication Lab, Cloud Computing Lab, Computer
Network Lab, Water Analysis Lab and installation of Weather Observatory.
Besides these, number of up to date software have been procured. The
University has also subscribed to IEL Online Journal which provides
opportunity to students to use large number of journals with back volumes.
Using these facilities large number of research papers in journals and
conferences have been published by the faculty and students.
The University has been very active in organizing technology
transfer and dissemination activities during the year. A two day workshop
on Research Methodology with participation of more than 150 candidates
from various states and twenty two experts for delivering expert lectures
was organized. The grand success of three days International Conference
on Recent Advances and Innovations and Engineering (ICRAIE-2014) has
generated a lot of confidence in the University as it has received loud
appreciation from the academic world. More than 1350 Research papers
were received and after an International Review, the selected 240 papers
were presented in three parallel sections which is record in Rajasthan.
This year the Zonal NASA, the biggest festival of architecture students
was organized in the University in which around 2500 students actively
participated. Also, LAKSHYA, the annual sports and cultural event of the
University was organized with great zeal and more than 1200 students
took part in this two days event.
During the year 2014-15, we have added some job oriented
courses namely BCA (Information Technology & Infrastructure
Management Services and Cloud Technology), BCA (Mobile
Applications& Information Security) and BFA (Animation & VFX). Our
objective is to fill in the demand the emerging sectors are generating to
prepare the students to fit into the future work place. This year the intake
of students in B. Architecture has been increased from 40 to 80.
Finally, I would apprise you of the grand success of the students of
the first batch of MBA in placement. Out of 79 students of first batch of
MBA, 59 students have already been placed in very good organizations
which proves that we are moving in the right direction. I would like to
mention that we are continuously upgrading, strengthening and
consolidating our basic teaching facilities for imparting excellence.
On behalf of all members of Poornima family, I express my
gratitude to all the dignitaries for gracing this occasion with their benign
presence and congratulate the students receivingdegrees today and
parents who are here with them. I also wish the passing out students very
best in all their future endeavors.
Jai Hind, Jai Jai Poornima Sansthan.

POORNIMA UNIVERSITY FIRST CONVOCATION ADDRESS
Padmashri Dr.Pritam Singh, Director General, IMI, Delhi
Respected Dr. Seth, Dr. Bhatia, Vinodji, the recipient of Honoris Causa Ph.D.,
Poonamji - his wife; Khanna Sahib and R K Agrawal Sahib are here. My very old
friend when I began my career in the administrative staff college of India, Hyderabad,
Raj Singh Nirwan is also sitting here, so I feel very happy. Board of Governors,
Academic Council Members, very distinguished invitees, parents of the graduating
batch and passing out students and also many students sitting here.
First of all let me begin by congratulating all the graduating students; not only
the students but their parents for providing them with the opportunity of sending them
at a great school and a great University. Having said that I would like to remind all
the graduating students, remember only one thing the name of Poornima. Please
always remember Poornima symbolizes blooming and blossoming moon. So I wish
all the passing out students to have a full moon all throughout their life. Remember
this name and with pride say that “I am a product of Poornima”. Having said that, I
think that there are a couple of points which Vinodji said, that prompted me to say
something about them. Vinodji was saying something about keeping your nation
first, your country is first – exciting and great. Why Kalam Sahib. made that
statement and why Vinodji is making that statement today? I am reminded of a
couplet which I wrote quite a long time back. That couplet is extremely important –
‘ : ? :
, ’
Friends, I think that this occasion is known as Dikshant Samaroh– where you
end your education (your Shiksha) this is the day when people give you Diksha. You
are entering in a very different kind of life. Away from the highly protected life with
your parents, highly protected life with teachers in the University – you have so far
been in a very protected environment. I remember very well, I think my daughter in
law was very keen that my grandson should not go to America because she said – “I
am not very sure that he can manage his life”. I said – How long will you be
protecting your son? I know that he is the only child but how long are you going to
protect him? Dear students you are moving from a highly protected sheltered
environment to the “World” and that world is a very different kind of world. Let me
say a few words about the emerging world. Chanakya made a very powerful
statement. He said it is the context that determines and provides guidelines for your
competency, guidelines for your mindset and guidelines for your attitude.
It is in for the first time in the human history, I have seen emergence of a
global business war. Business world is no more a business world – it is a business
war. It is a very different kind of war. In a typical war you know who your enemies are
and which territory you are going to capture. Dear students this is a war and it is a
boundary less war. Are you fighting a war with China? Are you fighting a war with
America? Are you fighting a war with Germany? Are you fighting a war with Europe?
Which country?? So you are fighting a war where territory is not known. You are
fighting a war where the enemy is not known. All this is what we have been teaching
in normal schools. I hope Dr. Bhatia and Dr. Seth will not mind this statement. I feel
whether this education is going to be relevant for tomorrow? – I am not very sure. It
may be relevant today but will it be relevant for tomorrow? So that is why dear
students don‟t call yourself a manager rather call yourself a warrior. You are not
going to be a warrior you are going to be a winning warrior. When you fight a war,
you are going to emerge as a winning warrior. To tell you something about how to
become a winning warrior and how to move in the world, you have to learn from the
lion who prepares every day how to run faster than a deer. The lion knows if I don‟t
learn to run faster than the deer; I will die of hunger. Every morning deer also
prepares how to run faster than the lion. The deer knows if I don‟t know how to run
faster than the lion; then it will kill me. This is the world you are going to face -
whether you like this world or do not like this world. Many times I feel bad about the
world but I cannot change the world. I can be a part of the world but I can‟t change it.
Having said that dear students I would like to give you FIVE MANTRAS for life.
When I was listening to VinodJi, I could guess one thing – only a very good
human being can be a good leader and only a good human being can be a good
entrepreneur only a good human being can be a good industrialist. If you try to see
the different civilizations – Egyptians, Babylonians, Roman civilization, Greek
Civilization – you will find one thing that all civilizations that had a good king survived
and thrived and when the king became a bad person, the civilization collapsed. You
must have also seen that those companies which were great companies once upon
a time people don‟t talk anything about them anymore and I am not just talking about
global companies, I am talking about fortune 500 companies. Of the 500 fortune
companies in 1995, only 14 companies could survive. If you are successful today
don‟t assume that you will be successful tomorrow. So based on all these
experiences, I would like to tell you success creates more anxiety. I remember that
when the Moscow State University chose me as the „19th Global Thought Leader‟, I
was the first person from Asia who was chosen in the galaxy of 19 Global Thought
Leaders including nine noble laureates. About five thousand people were there, the
media asked me - “How do you feel?” I said “miserable”. They asked me why you
feel miserable, I said my journey begins today that‟s why I am feeling miserable. To
the two students who got the award today I said your journey begins today. The
journey does not end with the award. That‟s why the moment you get something
people start expecting more from you. People do not expect anything from those
who are not great. The moment you become great, the moment when you have
completed your MBA from Poornima University people will expect more from you.
That is why friends may be five quick mantras will help you. I am using the word
“mantra” because “diksha” always talks about the mantras. Diksha doesn‟t talk about
the knowledge part.
First Mantra is ‘Himalayan vision Creates Himalayan energy’. It is the
vision that creates energy in you, smaller the vision, smaller the energy; larger the
vision larger the energy. So imagine your life, the passion in your life, the dream in
your life, is very much linked with what kind of vision you have got. How to see the
purpose of life? – it‟s the purpose that keeps you going. The moment purpose is
dead, we all are dead. Not many Indians are aware that the place where Lord
Krishna died. If I ask this question where did Lord Krishna die – 99% Indians are
unaware where lord Krishna died. How come we chant “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”
every day but we don‟t remember where Lord Krishna died. My answer is Lord
Krishna died the day Mahabharata was over. With Mahabharata the purpose of
Krishna‟s life was over. Dear students, your life is nothing without purpose. I would
give you a fire that would light the lamp of purpose continuously. I wrote a couplet
some time back:
' ; ’;
S go on shifting the goal post. Vinodji also talked about this in his speech. The first
mantra is Himalayan vision creates Himalayan energy. You are in the business of
creating vision, you are in the business of creating purpose, you are in the business
of providing directions, not only to yourself but to the entire community.
Second Mantra dear students and I hope you remember – ‘You are equal to
your contribution’. If people talk about Vinod ji today, many persons passed out
from IIM, Ahmadabad, I hope you will not mind, you are honored, you are respected
by the contributions you have made. The arithmetic of life, the algebra of life, and the
physics of life is nothing but contribution. You are just equal to your contribution.
With great contribution, we become great. With small contribution we become small.
Dear students, try to be like the karma yogi who contributes. Contribute if you want
to be remembered. Contribute if you want to be respected. People are not respected
because of the wealth they have made but they are respected for the contributions
they have made. That‟s why I always say that remember what legacy you want to
leave when you leave the company. What legacy you want to leave when you leave
the Government. What two things people will talk about you that will make your life
very different? Write down somewhere the place where I worked and lived what two
things people will talk about me and what you want that people should talk about
you. So that‟s why friends your life should be a life of contributions. Define your life in
terms to the contributions you want to make and that‟s where the whole concept to
Karma Yoga comes, that work like a Karma Yogi not necessarily to get something
because if you don‟t get you will be demoralized. So if you work like a Karma Yogi,
you will never be disappointed or demoralized you will always be motivated. I was
quite impressed by Dungarpur experiment talked about by Vinodji.
The Third Mantra is ‘those who live for others never die’, ‘Those who live
for themselves always die’. Are you living for community? Are you living for
society? Are you living for family? For whom are you living? And that is the only
difference between animals and human beings. Human beings do for others. And
that‟s why I shall tell something very interesting: ‘
’ – a person who does not live for himself never dies. But those who live for
themselves always die. Really students are you living for others? Are you living for
your colleagues? For whom are you living? And that is why students I am a follower
of servant leadership. You are servants first and leaders next. When I look at the
corporate world – leadership is moving. Leadership means serving people. Our
present prime minister has been saying one thing very interesting – Go to your
constituency. What is your constituency? If you ignore your constituency they will
throw you out. In the corporate world also, I have seen many leaders were thrown
out because they did not care about their constituency. They did not care about the
followers, they did not care about the constituency members and that‟s why they are
thrown out. Are you living for others or are you living for yourself. I remember when
my father died almost ten thousand people were around a small Government
hospital. I normally ask myself a question – when I die whether five hundred people
would be around me or not? My wife asks me why you are asking such a question –I
said that‟s the reality of life. And when he died though he did not go for MBA, he did
not go to America, he did not go anywhere, but he died as the most successful man.
His whole life was life for others. Dear students, if you live this life for others, you will
never die.
And that‟s why the third mantra of our Vedas is – ‘ - - ’.
Lord give me the strength to move from mortality to immortality. The lesson was not
physical immortality, because one day we all have to die. Lord give me the
conviction, give me the courage and strength to do something so that I am immortal
in the minds of people. And that‟s why you must have seen why we build houses for
our children? You must have remembered the song – „ ,
’. All the politicians and many bureaucrats get into trouble because they
don‟t want to make money just for themselves but they also want to make money for
their children. Whether the children will remember them or not is a different issue.
So, third mantra is those who live for others never die.
Fourth Mantra is a very fascinating mantra– ‘Great leaders always believe
in death’. Life begins from death. There should be continuous death in your life dear
students. Death of wrong ideas, death of wrong thinking and that‟s why the second
shloka is ‘
--
’–Lord give me the strength to move from darkness
to light. So long as you are going towards light you are having the journey of
leadership. We all have got the dark side and we have got the bright side. Early in
the morning if you look towards sun there is a very long shadow but when the sun
comes here there is no shadow. It means what? – let me learn, let me grow, let me
evolve, let me blossom so that I can actualize my full potential. God has given me
potential, God has given me power we must also question are we using that? If we
are not using that we will be having a very unfruitful death. You must have heard the
poem –
‘ , ’?
That is actualizing life, fully energizing life. Dear students, I am fully sure that your
life will be the life of actualizing your potential. When you go to sleep you must ask a
question – What I not like to be tomorrow, which I am today. Don‟t think that I am a
very – very religious person. I don‟t go to temple, I don‟t go to gurudwara and I don‟t
go to mosque. I always tell my wife that I don‟t believe in these kind of things but I
believe in noble ideas. Early in the morning you must get up and say – God give me
the courage to do at least one good thing today that‟s extremely important.
The last mantra-the Fifth Mantra dear students, is a very important mantra
and a very fascinating mantra. But before I give you that mantra I will ask you to take
a minute or two to do an exercise that I am asking you to do. You might be thinking
that on and on we are listening to many ‘ ’, so friends let‟s do some physical
exercise. So whatever I say please follow the rule is that whatever I say please
follow. Remember don‟t question my rules whatever I say please follow.
Raise your hands
Rotate your Hands
Relax your hands (physical exercise is equally important)
Raise both hands
Rotate both hands (remember whatever I say go on doing that)
Move your hands vertically
Raise only one hand up
Make a ring using two fingers (rule is please follow whatever I say)
Close your eyes and have seven times deep breathing
Please open your eyes slowly
Again rotate your hands
Hold your chin
(Audiences don‟t hold CHIN and hold their CHEEKS as demonstrated by Dr. Singh)
Dear friends, did you see the power of action in two minutes I intoxicated all of
you through the power of my actions. What a leader does, people follow. What a
leader says people don‟t care to follow. Whatever I said you did not follow and
whatever I did you followed. That is the life of leadership. Authority comes from
actions. Authority can never come from preaching. My dear friends if you want to be
the role models, if you want to be remembered by your school, if you want to
remember by your country, if you want to be remembered by society – engage with
your actions. Moral preaching we have heard for too long and sometimes cynically I
say moral preaching has divided the world rather than it has integrated the world. If I
look at the fight between Shias and Sunnis – it has been very bad. If I see the
fighting between the Bajrang dal, this dal and that dal, moral preaching has divided
the world. It is only actions my dear friends that can join the world. Leaders believe in
assimilation, Leaders believe in integration, Leaders believe in integration of mind
and soul.
Dear friends, all three great speakers who spoke before me said the power of
mind in the last hundred years must have increased hundred times. Whether the
power of soul has increased or decreased? If you look at the business leaders and
politicians it seems the power of soul has decreased. Gandhi did not do the MBA
program, when he was thrown out of a train in Johannesburg at 12 o clock in the
night, he did not do the decision tree analysis which we teach in the class. Listen to
the silence of the soul, soul will never allow you to do anything wrong. Mind will
always tempt you to do many things wrong. And that‟s why Arjuna asked a question
–How to be in control of things? Krishna’s reply was among the four yogas you
become a Karmayogi. Forget about mind when you go to sankhya yoga you use
your mind. When you go to Bhakti yoga you indulge your mind, if you indulge in
karma yoga, your mind will never think whatever you do. You must have seen when
you are doing something great, you forget about hunger, you forget about thirst, you
forget about being tired and you go on doing and doing. When you do it and achieve
it, you dance like a child. And I have seen people dancing like a child after doing
something great. Friends these are some of my random thoughts.
My wife asked me that you are going for to deliver a convocation address but I
don‟t see you writing your speech or preparing your speech. I said I am neither
writing nor preparing power points because power corrupts and power point corrupts
even more. How to get out of the power points? In a Dikshant Samaroh there should
be no power point presentation. There should be some diksha which will be useful
for life. Last one thing, I would like to say Kalidasa who was a great poet wrote: God
you can give me all the problems, you can give me all the punishments, all the
misery in my life and I will never grudge. But please don‟t give me the trouble of
reciting my poems in front of those who cannot appreciate them.
Thank you very much for being a very very appreciative audience.

Let me start by expressing our deep and heart-felt gratitudeto

management as a competent professional, successful entrepreneur
and an industry champion which has led to the development and
growth of industry and
benefits to the society at large. I am alsograteful to his family members
for kindly accepting our invitation to attend this program.
I would also like to thank the media who have come to cover this
Convocation ceremony. My heartfelt gratitude goes to our well wishers
and to all who have come here from different parts to join us in this
celebration and, also to all those who have tirelessly worked for the
success of the program.
In closing, let me congratulate the Degree recipients and thank you in
advance. You leave this ceremony today with a duty to uphold the
good name of the Poornima University as your alma mater – it is our
hope that wherever you are and whatever you do it will reflect positively
on us all. Make wise use of the tools –the knowledge and skills you
have learned here, especially your abilities to think critically,
systematically and scientifically. It is only through hard work and
continuous learning that you will reach your full potential. I wish you all
a bright future.
Once again thank you all and good day.
Thank you.
