It has been a big year at Families First!

We successfully completed our first endowmentcampaign, and celebrated our 20th year of servicewith a party hosted by Families First supporterChappy Thayer. In the spring, we held a StrategicPlanning retreat to develop goals and objectives for every aspect of Families First, beginning withconsidering emerging needs of the community andnew ways to meet those needs.

Also in fiscal year 2005, we added more HealthCenter consumers to our Board of Directors. Thesenew members provide valuable input about our operations and are excellent advocates for FamiliesFirst with government and the community. We alsobenefited from our first-ever fundraiser at The MusicHall in Portsmouth, a special event planned by someof the women who founded Families First 20 yearsago … received more donated services from dentistsand other health care professionals, enabling us toserve more people … and welcomed many excellentnew staff members, including Virginia Szymanowski, our first full-time Finance Director, and LeslieO’Brien, a nurse practitioner who is well-regarded inthe Seacoast.

Amidst all the changes, we have continued to workhard to meet the needs of the Seacoast community. Our health van served 423 homeless clients whowould not otherwise get the services they need, and earned very high quality ratings from theseclients. Our Family Support Center brought regularparenting classes to the Hampton area for the firsttime this year and saw a 31 percent increase in visitsover last year. Our Dental Center added weekendhours to meet the growing need for affordable dentalservices, though we continue to have a long list ofnew patients waiting to be seen. We have increasedour Health Center’s capacity by improving efficiencywhile continuing to offer superb quality of care.

Indeed, as you will read in the Programs andOutcomes section of this report, several of our clinical quality measures are at their highest levels ever.

We are pleased with the quality of the services wehave been able to offer over the past year, and withour ability to help community members get back ontheir feet. We have an excellent, hard-working staffand board, but we have not done it on our own. Weare very grateful to the many generous communitymembers who helped make our endowment andannual campaigns successful, including PortsmouthRegional Hospital, whose always-generous supportof Families First reached an unprecedented levelthis year.

We thank you for your past support and ask foryour continued help in the coming year. Together weare making a difference for this community!

Fundraiser Tapped Broad Community Support

The Mark Goodman Tap Company’s benefit performance at the Music Hall in June was special in many ways. It was planned by some of thewomen who founded Families First 20 years ago, including first Board Chair Ruth Mott. It represented a New Hampshire debut for MarkGoodman, Ruth’s son, who grew up and trained in the Seacoast. And it succeeded because the talent and energy of the 20-member Los Angeles-based troupe was combined with that of many other individuals and businesses, who helpedmake the fundraiser a resounding artistic and financial success. The event was dedicated to the memory of Pam Shulman, a longtime supporter and adviser to Families First. We thank everyone who attended, particularly those who generously purchased VIP tickets, and also the following event supporters:

Programs & OutcomesIt is often said, what gets measured gets done. That’s why Families First Health and SupportCenter’s comprehensive Quality Assurance plan measures not only usage of our many services, but also the benefits to Families First clients (“outcomes”) from receiving those services. TheQuality Assurance plan tracks trends in usage, such as the increases of 25% or more that we sawthis year in visits to Family Support groups, the Dental Center, and Health Care for Homelessvans. And it measures client outcomes over time, as well as against state and national averagesand established targets such as U.S. Healthy People 2010 goals. Following is a small sample ofall the service statistics and client outcomes tracked at Families First, for fiscal year 2005.

This year, more than 150 volunteers donated 4,200hours to help Families First and our clients. They servedon the Board of Directors, Consumer Advisory Council,Partners in Health Council and other committees, organized the Family Exchange free store, cared forchildren while their parents attended parenting classes, did newsletter mailings, and much more. (The listbelow does not include Board of Directors andAdvisory Board members, who are listed separately.)
