The Second CommandmentWhat Does It Mean?

“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth…” A graven image is usually defined as a wooden or stone

carving of an idol, or just about any tangible representation of the idol.

Essentially, it is being said that one should not worship an interpretation or tangible symbol of God, and worship him, and him only.

MoneyMoney

Have you ever seen someone obsessed with money? What were the “important” things to them?

Were they focused on their religion or morals or values?

How does money change an individual’s life? Did they let money come between them and family

or friends?

Cars are often worshiped by people. They are seen as status symbols. What is the purpose for owning a super

fancy, expensive car? Keep in mind the original purpose of the

automobile, to get people from Point A to Point B.

AthletesAthletes

While it is okay to see athletes as an inspiration, it is not okay to idolize them.

They are human, therefore they make errors as well. They make mistakes and bad choices. You can not trust them to lead you in a morally

correct direction, as they are just as open to temptation as anyone else.

Why Should We Avoid Abuse of These Idols

Why Should We Avoid Abuse of These Idols

Overall, these idols lead us away from our morals and values - intentionally or not.

The only way to avoid being mislead is to be aware of the way you use these, and to not be obsessive over them.

As long as we focus on our own beliefs, our morals, our values, and do not let these “false idols” lead us away from what we believe.
