Shared governance cont’d
The faculty should also be involved in institutional decision making, because such decisions can significantly affect teaching and research.
Examples of this involvement include decisions about: • The institution's long-range objectives; • The institution's physical and fiscal resources; • The manner in which the institution's funds are
distributed among its various divisions; and • The search and selection of its president and chief
academic officer.

Shared governance is founded on:
• Faculty authority for teaching and research as a necessary condition for academic freedom
• Recognition of teaching and research as central to the functions of the university; and
• Faculty participation in institutional decision making to support the university's vision, mission, and strategic plan.
