EVIDENCE-BASED COACHING FOR CHANGE
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
WHY WHAT HOW
See: http://ccri.uw.edu/pathways/cfc/cfc-resources/cfcbrief_ccri/
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
What is the college’s history with change, and why is change
needed now?
What solutions will lead to more equitable student outcomes and
improved college performance?
How should the college implement solutions
and continuously improve?
WHY WHAT HOW
.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
ASSESS WHAT’S CHANGINGØ Continually clarify expectations, goals, roles and
intended outcomes• What data do we have/need to show what is
changing? • Are the changes we want to make actually
happening? • How will we know?
Ø Link “coaching for change” to institutional research and continuous improvement
LISTEN TO STUDENTS
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
Ø Student input is important and often missing Ø Get to know students on a deeper level
• Local community, underrepresented voicesØ Ensure your college is hearing the good, the bad,
and the uglyØ Use these perspectives to inform the change
process
COACH/CONSULTANT MEETING
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
Ø Coach/consultant and college point of contact set up meeting and co-create agenda
Ø Set clear purpose and goals for interactionsØ Balance learning & advisingØ Designate who is responsible for summarizing and
creating action steps after visit/meetingsØ Schedule time(s) for post-visit reflection

DO…• Build a partnership between your coach, college leaders
and other change leader(s) (faculty, staff, students, etc.)• Hold yourselves accountable for actions and outcomes• Use data and evidence to optimize coaching time • Get the right people in the room with your coach• Ensure your coach has enough time with research staff• Leverage your coach where you need them the most;
Debrief internally and compare to coach’s follow-up report
COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH INTITATIVES CCRI.UW.EDU
DON’T…
• Expect your coach to do what your college can’t do itself
(the college must own the change process)
• Waste coach’s time on “show and tell”
• Schedule visit so tightly there’s no room to pursue
emerging issues
• Make your coach the “heavy”, think too narrowly about
coach’s skill set, or be defensive – Learn from mistakes
• Wait too long to recognize process steps and wins
