Obese fathers make forunhealthy children, who

could also be vulnerable tocancer, says a new research. The study by Duke Univer-sity Medical Centre is the firstto show that paternal obesitymay alter a genetic mecha-nism in the next generation, suggesting that a father'slifestyle factors may be trans-mitted to his children.

"Understanding the risksof the current Westernlifestyle on future generationsis important," said molecularbiologist Adelheid Soubry, postdoctoral associate at theDuke CancerInstitute, wholed the study, the journalBMC Medicine reports.

"The aim of this study wasto determine potential associ-ations between obesity in par-

ents prior to conception andepigenetic profiles in off-spring, particularly at certaingene regulatory regions," saidSoubry, according to a Dukestatement.

Researchers looking athealth outcomes in newbornshave historically focused onpregnant women. Studieshave shown that nutritionand environmental factorsduring pregnancy can affectchildren's health and mayraise their risk of chronic dis-eases. However, little hasbeen done to uncover howpaternal factors can affectchildren’s health and mayraise their risk of chronic dis-eases. However, little hasbeen done to uncover howpaternal factors can affectchildren. The Duke research

team sought to determine as-sociations between obesity inparents and changes in DNAmethylation at the insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2)gene among offspring.

DNA methylation regu-lates the activity of certaingenes, which can reflect ahigher risk for some diseases.Decreased DNA methylationat the IGF2 gene has beentied to a greater risk of devel-oping certain cancers, includ-ing colorectal and ovariancancers.

"Our genes are able toadapt to our environment. However, we adjust in a waythat may be problematiclater," said Cathrine Hoyo, cancer epidemiologist atDuke Medicine and thestudy's senior author. – IANS
