To cap what has already been a diverse and exciting year, Melbourne Recital Centre presents an array of vibrant performances from October to December. Melbourne Festival takes over the Centre in October with a panoply of events, including the centenary celebration of Schoenberg’s revolutionary dark cabaret piece Pierrot lunaire, with dance devised by Phillip Adams of BalletLab. Renowned genre-hopping mavericks Bang on a can All-Stars travel to Australia for the exclusive Australian Premiere of their multimedia anthology concert, Field Recordings, and a live performance of Brian Eno’s iconic album, Music For Airports. Our local Heroes present their final concerts for 2012 and we slip into the Christmas spirit with a program of choral and orchestral delights for children and adults alike. From all of us at the Centre, thank you for your support this year. We wish you a joyous festive season and look forward to sharing the best live music with you again in 2013.

The second concert of this year’s Wilma & Friends series showcases the talents of two of Melbourne’s emerging musical stars – cellist William Hewer and bassist Phoebe Russell. In a performance of Bottesini’s Duo for cello and bass, as well as the Dvorák and Glazunov String Quintets,

Flinders Quartet combines forces with the Red Stitch Actors Theatre and playwright Adam Cass to explore how musical aesthetic is affected by the necessary personal tension in the practise room. This new piece of ‘chamber music theatre’ gives a fly-on-the-wall experience of the rehearsal room and delves into the many layers of Schubert’s seminal string quartet, Death and the Maiden. Experience the full quartet after interval – Schubert’s work will never be heard the same way again.

The interplay of the soloists in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto ranges from the athletic to the rapturous, making it one of the most compelling conversations in all music and a perennial audience favourite. In contrast to Bach’s intricate perfection, early-Baroque composer Biber’s vivid depiction of a battle comes complete with cannon-fire and other very special effects.

‘Mozart seems to have written for the people of Bohemia... even in the countryside his music is widely loved,’ said the Praguer Neue Zeitung not long after the composer’s death. Prague gave Mozart many of his greatest box office successes so, as you might expect, the high-esteem was mutual. ‘My Praguers understand me,’ Mozart said, and he gifted them with one of his most glorious symphonies, premiered there in January 1786.

Appearing regularly with many of Australia’s finest chamber ensembles, musicians and orchestras, Kristian Chong has carved out an impressive and busy concert career in Australia and abroad. Discover this talented musician in solo recital. The stern humour and wit of Haydn’s B minor Sonata is juxtaposed with the gorgeous harmonies of the seldom-performed Brahms Variations on an Original Theme No.1. Rachmaninov’s Preludes Op.32 highlight the potential for resonance and contrast at the modern piano, including Rachmaninov’s personal favourite (B minor). Concluding is Liszt’s masterful Sonata in B minor, considered to be one of the greatest works for piano and one of the most accomplished works for any instrument.

Andrew SchultzPianist/composer Gemma turvey launches her eagerly-awaited album, Landscapes for a Mind’s Eye, with her chamber ensemble, the New Palm Court Orchestra. The Orchestra is a natural extension of Turvey’s jazz piano trio work, bringing to life the evocative, cinematic qualities inherent in her music. Palm court orchestras were popular in the 1920s and 30s for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality. This concert will also feature guest soloists including Craig Beard (vibraphone), Luke Moller (violin) and singers from Ensemble Gombert.

In this special program, Melbourne Recital Centre’s exquisite Klop chamber organ is performed by early keyboard specialist John O’Donnell. A celebrated academic and musician, O’Donnell is a leading authority in organ and harpsichord repertoire of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. He will trace the links between the leading composers for the organ, including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Samuel Scheidt, Dietrich Buxtehude through to Johann Pachelbel and J.S. Bach, performing works which we believe to be intended as pure entertainment, rather than for liturgical purposes.

Palm court orchestras were popular in the 1920s and 30s for playing light instrumental music in an intimate setting. The New Palm Court Orchestra injects this seductive format with a new and fresh vitality. The enfant terrible of Australia’s contemporary opera scene, Chamber Made Opera has built a reputation for wild, subversive takes on the conventional opera format. This renegade company casts its decidedly unorthodox gaze over ancient Greek legend with The Minotaur Trilogy, an opera told over three suitably epic chapters. Taking its inspiration from Monteverdi’s famous lost opera – of which the celebrated Lamento d’Arianna is the only fragment that remains – this work finds the ageless story of thwarted love, misplaced heroism and tragic human failings twisted, inverted and collapsed, a strange new mythology conjured from a familiar tale. A young American man was shot dead on the eve of his 30th birthday in May 2007, after intervening in an attempted mugging in the party district of Lapa in Rio de Janeiro. The gunman was an off-duty police officer and the event shone a light on Brazil’s epidemic of police violence. tim Fain is an artist on a meteoric rise. Gaining numerous awards and accolades as an influential emerging talent, he is best known popularly for his work in the film Black Swan, both as an onscreen performer and a contributor to the film’s Grammy-nominated soundtrack. Now Fain makes good on the promise of his earlier projects with Portals, a one-man multimedia marvel that pushes at the boundaries of classical performance. As Fain plays, projected images bring a series of filmed guests to play along: pianist Nicholas Britell provides accompaniment; radio personality Fred Child reads spoken-word pieces by Leonard Cohen; dancers, choreographed by Benjamin Millepied, cavort through domestic scenes; and a duplicate Tim Fain even drops in to provide recorded counterpoint to his live self. Both just 28 years old, piano virtuosos Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni are the pre-eminent pianists of their generation in their respective homelands: Israel and Palestine. For the past four years they have performed together as Duo Amal, their finesse and energy taking them to some of the world’s most prestigious auditoriums, from the Beijing Concert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall to the legendary Beethovenhalle in Bonn. tim Fain is an artist on a meteoric rise. Gaining numerous awards and accolades as an influential emerging talent, he is best known popularly for his work in the film Black Swan, both as an onscreen performer and a contributor to the film’s Grammy-nominated soundtrack. Now Fain makes good on the promise of his earlier projects with Portals, a one-man multimedia marvel that pushes at the boundaries of classical performance. As Fain plays, projected images bring a series of filmed guests to play along: pianist Nicholas Britell provides accompaniment; radio personality Fred Child reads spoken-word pieces by Leonard Cohen; dancers, choreographed by Benjamin Millepied, cavort through domestic scenes; and a duplicate Tim Fain even drops in to provide recorded counterpoint to his live self. Bang on a Can has been a vital force in American music for 25 years. Somewhere between a rock band, jazz combo and a classical ensemble, the new-music mavericks borrow freely from every musical tradition, with a sound that’s impossible to categorise but utterly unmistakable. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe created the first Bang on a Can Marathon concert in 1987 in order to break down the barriers that separate musical communities. Their idea was simple: instead of sorting music by style, genre, or venue it would be more powerful to group music by innovation, finding the rebels in each musical community, the restless creators not content to leave conventions unchallenged. The Bang on a can All-Stars, a permanent ensemble formed in 1992, pursue this mission year-round, astonishing audiences world-wide and shattering the definition of what concert music is today.

What would happen if today’s genre-blurring composers went into the field and brought back sounds to challenge their own music? The answer is Field Recordings, nine new compositions especially for the Bang on a Can All-Stars by Tyondal Braxton, Christian Marclay (video artist and creator of the astonishing 24-hour film, The Clock), Nick Zammuto, Mira Calix, Florent Ghys, Evan Ziporyn, Michael Gordon, David Lang (Pulitzer Prize-winner) and Julia Wolfe. Using film, found sounds and archival audio and video, Field Recordings builds a bridge between the seen and the unseen, the present and the absent, between today and the past.

The brilliant acoustic rendering of Eno’s electronic ambient music masterpiece Music for Airports is the signature Bang on a Can All-Stars experience. Eno’s music layers gentle loops of tinkling pianos, wordless choir and synthesisers to create music that is both tranquil and transitory. Bang on a Can has transcribed Music for Airports for a large ensemble and choir, breathing a human warmth into Eno’s slightly chilly soundscapes, and yielding perhaps the definitive version of the gorgeously uneventful epic. The All-Stars’ performance of this work at festivals, concert halls and airports world-wide has been acclaimed as fascinating and deeply moving.

Songlines of the HeartMerlyn Quaife (soprano), Paul Barrymore Hughes (baritone) and Amir Farid (piano) combine forces to perform songs by master composer, Richard Mills. The concert will be built around Songlines of the Heart’s Desire, a cycle for baritone and soprano, featuring beautiful texts to melt your heart. Well known for his operatic works, come and acquaint yourself with Mills’ sensitive word setting in the art song genre. Merlyn will also sing Richard Mills’ cycle, Here Where Death and Life are Met which are settings of Judith Wright’s poetry. These cycles will be complemented with other art songs on the theme of life, love and death.

Violin and harp make a slightly unusual combination, but a warm and beautiful one. Elizabeth Sellars and Marshall McGuire are the ideal performers for this richly coloured and utterly charming program. France in the 19th and 20th centuries was a wonderful place for harpists: an outpouring of technical and musical innovation for the instrument captured the imagination of composers such as Hasselmans and Saint-Saëns. Bach’s violin sonata is transformed with harp accompaniment while Melbourne composer Stuart Greenbaum’s Nine Candles for Dark Nights makes an evocative centrepiece for the year’s final concert.

Celebrate Halloween with Sutherland trio as they continue their exploration of the Beethoven Piano Trios with a performance of the Ghost Trio. A ‘mystery work’ will be unveiled alongside Sutherland’s interpretation of the Tre Quadri by the composer Sándor Veress, who was the teacher of Ligeti and Kurtág, as well as an outstanding representative of the Hungarian tradition after Bartók.

France in the 19th and 20th centuries was a wonderful place for harpists: an outpouring of technical and musical innovation for the instrument captured the imagination of composers such as Hasselmans and Saint-Saëns. Bach’s violin sonata is transformed with harp accompaniment while Melbourne composer Stuart Greenbaum’s Nine Candles for Dark Nights makes an evocative centrepiece for the year’s final concert.

Celebrate Halloween with Sutherland trio as they continue their exploration of the Beethoven Piano Trios with a performance of the Ghost Trio. A ‘mystery work’ will be unveiled alongside Sutherland’s interpretation of the Tre Quadri by the composer Sándor Veress, who was the teacher of Ligeti and Kurtág, as well as an outstanding representative of the Hungarian tradition after Bartók.

Jack Liebeck has established himself as one of the most compelling violinists on the concert platform today, performing concertos recently with such orchestras as the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestra. In this Schumann celebration, Jack joins Melbourne musicians Howard Penny, Kristian Chong and Simon Oswell to perform two of Schumann’s greatest chamber works, his Piano Quartet and Piano Quintet. Although Schumann started composing the Quartet only a few days after completing the Quintet, the two works could not be more different; the (slightly) later work is actually the more traditional, especially in Schumann’s use of counterpoint. Assistant Leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Victoria Sayles, joins the ensemble for the Quintet in what promises to be a thrilling performance.

ludovico’s Band performs gems of the late 17th century revealing the splendour of the Austro-Bohemian empire. Compositions preserved in the Moravian archives of the castle at Kromeritz include fantastical musical battles by the virtuosic violinist Biber, sumptuous dances by Schmeltzer, composed for elaborate court pantomimes and balls and sublime string works from Muffat, the most cosmopolitan of European composers. From this stunning collection of virtuosic string music we look forward to a program that will dazzle and enliven with the sounds of gut strings being plucked, hit and bowed in a percussive and thrilling evening’s entertainment.

The tinalley String Quartet closes its 2012 series with an American-inspired program. Stravinsky’s Three Pieces are a study in eccentricity – highly colourful, they surprise at every turn. John Adams’ 2008 Quartet has been described by The New York Times as ‘a stylistically fluid extended fantasy, with the players moving seamlessly through a colourful sequence of episodes’. A performance not to be missed! Samuel Barber’s heart wrenching Adagio from his second string quartet and Dvorák’s beloved American Quartet close the 2012 Season.

Fun-filled interactive concerts for babies and toddlers return with Getting Around by Baby Love Music Fun. Join opera singer Melanie Maslin and her team as she leads you and your baby or toddler through key musical and movement activities that babies find fun and stimulate their development. Incorporating well-known tunes from The Nutcracker, Mozart’s Flute Concerto and Carmen as well as nursery rhymes and lullabies, these concerts feature live singing, puppets, props and facilitated movement to enhance you and your baby or toddler’s experience of music.

The Snowman is an enchanting Christmas story for children of all ages. This family-friendly Christmas concert includes a live orchestra along with a screening of the animated film The Snowman. One morning James wakes to see his backyard covered in a thick blanket of snow. Overjoyed, he sets about building a snowman. That night, unable to sleep, he gets up to check on his creation. There’s magic in the air as he opens the back door – James can’t believe his eyes, the snowman has come to life!

This concert is appropriate for primary school age children.

Getting Around with Baby Love Music Fun

The SnowmanBrahms’ piano music spans his entire creative life. In the mighty Variations and Fugue of 1861, he takes a theme from a Handel Keyboard suite and fashions from it a powerful piano panorama. The Two Rhapsodies, which he created nearly 20 years later, are among his most lyrical works for the instrument, while the masterful Quintet, a work which took Brahms many years to complete, is a landmark in the history of chamber music – bold, passionate and written on a grand scale.

Fun-filled interactive concerts for babies and toddlers return with Getting Around by Baby Love Music Fun. Join opera singer Melanie Maslin and her team as she leads you and your baby or toddler through key musical and movement activities that babies find fun and stimulate their development. Incorporating well-known tunes from The Nutcracker, Mozart’s Flute Concerto and Carmen as well as nursery rhymes and lullabies, these concerts feature live singing, puppets, props and facilitated movement to enhance you and your baby or toddler’s experience of music.

The Snowman is an enchanting Christmas story for children of all ages. This family-friendly Christmas concert includes a live orchestra along with a screening of the animated film The Snowman. One morning James wakes to see his backyard covered in a thick blanket of snow. Overjoyed, he sets about building a snowman. That night, unable to sleep, he gets up to check on his creation. There’s magic in the air as he opens the back door – James can’t believe his eyes, the snowman has come to life!

This concert is appropriate for primary school age children.

Getting Around with Baby Love Music Fun

The SnowmanBrahms’ piano music spans his entire creative life. In the mighty Variations and Fugue of 1861, he takes a theme from a Handel Keyboard suite and fashions from it a powerful piano panorama. The Two Rhapsodies, which he created nearly 20 years later, are among his most lyrical works for the instrument, while the masterful Quintet, a work which took Brahms many years to complete, is a landmark in the history of chamber music – bold, passionate and written on a grand scale.

Each Ears Wide Open is a fascinating 80-minute interactive event for audiences of all ages, featuring the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Australia’s Mr Music, Richard Gill. In Ears Wide Open, Richard explores the worlds of the musical masterworks which will be featured in the MSO concert season, making each event an entertaining musical guide to your concert adventures. Steven Osborne seems to have a direct line to the composers he performs – giving note perfect and idiomatic readings of music from personalities as different as Mozart and Messiaen. With typical care, Osborne has composed a program of music from early-20th Century Russia, including Rachmaninov’s dark and dazzling Second Sonata and a delicious rarity by his colleague Nikolai Medtner. This is music from a society on the brink of upheaval and after: by turns joyous, violent, tragic and melancholy.

During his exile in France, Charles II was greatly influenced by the music of the court of Louis XIV. Upon his return to England, he encouraged new music in this style. Henry Purcell seized the opportunity to modernize English art song and dramatic music, and in doing so became one of the most loved and admired composers of English song of all time. Designed to accompany the solo voice, the theorbo is the perfect vehicle to transport you back to the 17th century; a time of exploration into the extremes of human emotion in song. Performed by mezzo-soprano Sally-Anne Russell and Samantha Cohen on theorbo.

The coarse and fragile voice of a tramp is transformed into an uplifting statement of colour and hope in Gavin Bryars’ classic Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet. On Loop also features Bernhard Lang, an Austrian composer taking Europe by storm with his distinctive voice which mashes hard-edged Modernism and Minimalism with a touch of prog-rock and jazz thrown in. The final concert this year for Wilma & Friends features three well-known chamber musicians always in demand. Pianist Ian Munro, violist Brett Dean and cellist Howard Penny join Wilma Smith to perform a program of much-loved music for piano quartet.

Some of Australia’s most gifted young opera singers, fresh from the Acclaim Italian Opera Fellowship Awards and International Master Class Series, will perform the world’s most beloved arias. A special guest performance will be given by Valeria Esposito, one of Europe’s most sought after sopranos (Cardiff Singer of the World, La Scala, Wiener Statsoper). A night of Italian passion and drama to savour for a lifetime.

Geoffrey lancaster returns to continue his enlightened exploration of works from the Classical period on Melbourne Recital Centre’s beautiful McNulty fortepiano (a forerunner of the modern piano). Geoffrey’s ‘blend of scholarly wisdom and impeccable musicianship’ (Sydney Morning Herald) brings to life the emotionally and harmonically turbulent music of CPE Bach, two of Haydn’s late sonatas which perfectly demonstrate the composer’s improvisatory approach, and one of Beethoven’s early sonatas: its sunny good humour is indebted to his teacher, ‘Papa’ Haydn himself. Geoffrey’s performance celebrates the innovation of these Classical composers, performing these works in the spirit of their time and as their original audiences would have enjoyed them.

The festival of Christmas represents one of the few remaining public occasions where an Australian public is liable to break into song. Sing Joyfully celebrates that fact by providing an opportunity for the consort of melbourne to lead an audience through a program that mixes some of the masterworks by composers written for this time of year with opportunities for the audience to join in.

The Australian Boys choir has celebrated Christmas with the Melbourne community since 1939, and in 2012, the tradition continues as the boys invite you to join them for a festive treat. Christmas with the Australian Boys Choir will feature Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, written in 1942 and first performed by the Choir in 1967. Since then this masterpiece has become a regular and much-loved staple of the repertoire. Delyth Stafford, one of this country’s leading harpists, will join the boys for this work. The remainder of the program explores the rich heritage of carols, old and new. As tradition demands, there will be opportunities for the audience to sing-along,

The festival of Christmas represents one of the few remaining public occasions where an Australian public is liable to break into song. Sing Joyfully celebrates that fact by providing an opportunity for the consort of melbourne to lead an audience through a program that mixes some of the masterworks by composers written for this time of year with opportunities for the audience to join in.

The Australian Boys choir has celebrated Christmas with the Melbourne community since 1939, and in 2012, the tradition continues as the boys invite you to join them for a festive treat. Christmas with the Australian Boys Choir will feature Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, written in 1942 and first performed by the Choir in 1967. Since then this masterpiece has become a regular and much-loved staple of the repertoire. Delyth Stafford, one of this country’s leading harpists, will join the boys for this work. The remainder of the program explores the rich heritage of carols, old and new. As tradition demands, there will be opportunities for the audience to sing-along,

melbourne Ballet Orchestra presents an exciting program of some of the best-loved ballet music, including Tchaikovsky’s complete suite from The Nutcracker. You may have seen these players on the concert stage, in ballet and opera performances or accompanying leading international artists. Come join them for a wonderful family Christmas celebration!
