EvaluatingthelinesofevidenceforplatetectonicsGoodsciencemeansthatwedon’tmindlesslyacceptideasastrue—wecriticallyevaluatethoseideas.Asyouknow,thatcriticalevaluationinvolvesmakingobservationsandinterpretations.Platetectonics,whichyouwillinvestigateindetailthisweek,istheacceptedideainthescientificcommunityabouthowtheEarthworks.Itexplainsgeologicphenomenasuchasearthquakes,volcaniceruptions,andmountainbuilding.However,ittookdecadesofcarefulobservations,interpretations,arguing,modifyingideas,etc.todevelopthisidea.Likeanygoodgeologistwoulddo,Iwantyoutospendsometimeevaluatingthelinesofevidencethatwereusedtodeveloptheideathatwenowknowasplatetectonics.I.Evidenceforcontinentaldrift(1)Briefly,whatdoes“continentaldrift”mean,andwhenwasthisideaproposed?Inpreparationfortoday’sclass,youshouldhavedonesomereadingononeofthefollowinglinesofevidencethatwasusedtosupportcontinentaldrift:

II.EvidenceforplatetectonicsAswewilldiscussinclassnextclass,platetectonicsisamodifiedversionofcontinentaldrift.Scientistsmadeseveralobservationsthatprovidedevidenceforplatetectonics.Inpreparationfortoday’sclass,youshouldhavedonesomereadingononeofthefollowinglinesofevidencethatwasusedtosupportcontinentaldrift:

• Ageoftheseafloor• Sedimentthicknessontheoceanfloor• Shapeoftheoceanfloor
