Engineering: Wind
Energy Workshop is a
60-minute program where
students practice the
engineering design
process from start to
finish.

NGSS Connections• 3.3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem that reflects a need or
a want. Include criteria for success and constraints on materials, time,
or cost that a potential solution must meet.
• 3.3-5-ETS1-2. Generate several possible solutions to a given design
problem. Compare each solution based on how well each is likely to
meet the criteria and constraints of the design problem.
• 4-ESS3-1. Obtain information to describe that energy and fuels
humans use are derived from natural resources and that some energy
and fuel sources are renewable and some are not.
• 4-PS3-4. Apply scientific principles of energy and motion to test and
refine a device that converts kinetic energy to electrical energy or
uses stored energy to cause motion or produce light or sound
![Page 4: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
NGSS Connections • 4.3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out tests of one or more design features
of a given model or prototype in which variables are controlled and
failure points are considered to identify which features need to be
improved. Apply the results of tests to redesign a model or prototype.
• 4.3-5-ETS1-5. Evaluate relevant design features that must be
considered in building a model or prototype of a solution to a given
design problem.
• 6.MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem
with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution. Include
potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may
limit possible solutions.

![Page 6: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Needs
We bring all materials
and equipment, including
a video projector and
screen. Access to 110-
volt electricity is required.
![Page 7: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Space Requirements
A set of program equipment will fit in any room at
least 18´ by 24´ in area. The floor must be clear,
and all sessions must be taught in the same room.
![Page 8: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Goals: Energy
The program uses fan-
driven wind turbines that
turn kinetic energy into
electrical energy. Their
effectiveness is measured
with voltmeters.
![Page 9: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Goals: Variables
Student groups measure
the performance of blade
variables like quantity,
shape, and surface area.
![Page 10: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Goals: Data Collection
The students graph the
results of their tests and
share that data with the
whole class.
![Page 11: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Goals: Designing
In the final activity,
students use their test
results to design their
own blades.
![Page 12: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Goals: Testing
They test their designs
with the wind turbines,
measuring the voltage
and theorizing what
worked well or not so well.
![Page 13: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Goals: Redesign
There’s usually enough
time for one redesign of
their blades—a crucial
part of engineering.
![Page 14: Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop - Museum of Science · Description Engineering: Wind Energy Workshop is a 60-minute program where students practice the engineering design process](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042202/5ea2138f3455546cc13e784f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
