P.H.(PeterHoward)Mackie’spaternalgrandparentswereThomasMackieandJaneSnedden.Theirthirdchild,JamesMackie,wasP.H.’sfather.
ThomasandJaneemigratedfromScotlandtoEasternCanadaseparatelybysailingshipsatdifferenttimes.BothmigratedfurtherinlandtoLanarkCountyinaregionthatwasthennamed“UpperCanada,”nowpartofpresentdayOntario.ThedrivingforceforimmigrationtothisareaofCanadawasfreelandgrants,availabletobothex-militaryandciviliansoftheBritishCrown.
InformationonThomasMackie’searlierlifeandancestryinScotlandisfragmented,asisdiscussedinthetopicpaper,SearchforThomasMackieScottishRoots.ItisbelievedthathewasfromornearLinlithgowshirejustwestofEdinburgh.Hisexactpath,portofarrival,andtimeofarrivalinCanadaisnotknown.ButfromlandgrantrecordshesettledintofarminginBeckwithTownship,OntarioinMay1821.
ThehistoryofJaneSnedden’semigrationfromScotlandandimmigrationinto“UpperCanada”iswellknownfromtwosources.Thefirstsource,TheSneddenSaga,describesSneddenfamilylifeinScotland,andtheparticularsofJaneandclosefamilymembers’movefromScotlandtoUpperCanada.Thesecondsourceisa36pagebookletpublishedbyaScot,JohnMcDonald,bookletcovershownonthenextpage.(ThisstylebookletwasverypopularinGreatBritainforcitizenstoreadandevaluateoptionsforimmigrationtotheNewWorld).
JohnMcDonaldwasinthesamegroupoffoursailingshipscontaining1,800ScottishimmigrantstravelingtogetherfromScotlandtoQuebecCityin1821.Amajorityofthearrivingpassengers,includingthejournalistJohnMcDonald,traveleduptheSt.LawrenceRiverbysteamship,thencontinuedfurtherupriverinflatbottomboatstoPrescott,Ontariobyflat-bottomboat.ThenthepartytraveledoverlandfromBrockvillebyprimitiveroadtotherecentlyfoundedLanarkCounty,Ontario.OnceinLanarkCounty,familiesobtainedrightstolandfromtheCrown.

HistoricSettinginCanada
Worldhappeningscomingintotheyear1815hadagreatimpactinthedevelopmentofwhatwasthencalled“UpperCanada”.TheWarof1812betweenGreatBritainandtheUSAdidnotwinddownuntiltheTreatyofGhentPeaceTreatywhichwasdraftedattheendof2014andratifiedinearly1815.Thepre-warboundariesbetweenthetwocountrieswerereestablished,andBritishtroopsinoccupiedUSAreturnedtoCanada,andAmericantroopsinCanadareturnedtotheUSA.
JustafewmonthsafterhostilitiesbetweenGreatBritainandtheUSAceased,closeto15yearsofconflictsbetweenGreatBritainandFranceendedwithNapoleon’sfinaldefeatinJune1815.AlthoughGreatBritainwasthefinalvictor,theywereleftwithamanifoldofproblems:largenumberofactiveBritishtroopsinEuropethatwerenolongerneeded,anumberBritishtroopsstrandedinCanadawithno

mission,hugewardebt,anticipationoflargescaleunemploymentexpectedfromdropinmanufacturingofmilitarysupplies,andjoblessnessexacerbatedbyex-militaryreenteringthejobmarket.
AddedtoallthiswasthatGreatBritainfeltinsecureabouttheirabilitytoholdontotheirlandsinCanada.AnumberofCanadianresidentswereoriginallyfromAmericanfamilies.AndaportionofresidentBritishcitizensinCanadawereattractedtotheconceptoftherepublicanstyleofgovernmentintheUSAtothatofamonarchy.MuchoftheCanadianpopulationwaslocatedalongtheSt.LawrenceRiverandtheGreatLakes.TheUSAmilitarywasstillstrongandintact,andcouldfireartilleryfromtheUSAsideacrosstheStLawrenceRiverrightintoCanada.ItcouldtakeoverpiecesofCanadaatwill,especiallyiftheyweretacitlyordirectlysupportedbysomelocalsthathadambivalentloyaltytotheCrown.
AllthesefactorsledtoBritishgovernmentactionin1815-1820todevelopprogramstosupportmajorimmigrationintounoccupiedpartsof“UpperCanada”awayfromthevulnerabilityoftheSt.LawrenceRiver.Programsincludedestablishingpeacetimemilitaryestablishmentsforroadbuilding,surveyingtheland,establishingtownships,andfurthersubdividingthesetownshipsintolotsforfreelandgrants(usually100acreplots).Othermeasurestakenwereestablishinglocalmilitiasfordefenseagainstinvasions,andtheplanningoftheRideauCanalprojectnorthandroughlyparalleloftheStLawrenceRiverwhichwouldallowsafenavigationfromMontréaltoKingstononLakeOntario,thelocationoftheBritishGreatLakesnavalfleet.
Forencouragingoccupationofthesenewlands,residentBritishsoldersinCanadawereofferedfreelandgrantsandhalfpensionsinplaceofreturningpassagetoEurope,RetiredEuropeantheatersolderswereofferedfreelandgrants,oceanpassageandsomefinancialsupport.Civilians,mainlyfromScotlandandIreland,wereofferedfreelandgrants,financialsupportbeforeleavingGreatBritainandagainuponarriving,buthadtopaytheirownoceanpassage.
SneddenFamilyinScotland
OfparticularinteresttoourfamilyhistoryissettlementinthenewLanarkCounty,mostlyinBeckwithTownshipwithinthatcounty.
TheSneddenfamilyrootsinScotlandareknownbacktoabout1700.Thisearlyhistorywillnotbereviewedhere.Let’spickupthetimelineofJaneSnedden(aka,JeanSnedden),hersiblings,fatherJamesSnedden,andhermotherChristinaMontgomery.
Sneddenfamilymembersshowupascoal-hewersorcolliersinScottishparishrecords.Itwascommonthatmen,womenandchildrenwouldworkinsomeroleintheindustry,insomecasesinnearslaveconditionstothemineowners.Jameswasinvolvedinthisriskyoccupationatayoungage.

ThetrajectoryoffatherJames’lifewaschangedwhenhewasrecruitedinGlasgowbythe82ndregimenttoquelltheuprisinginthethirteenAmericancolonies.Hewasacceptedfordutyin1778justafterhis18thbirthday.HesailedforHalifax,NovaScotiaandthenontoMaineforfurthertraining.In1779hemovedtoseverallocationsinthecoloniesandwasinvolvedinskirmishesuntiltheBritishsurrenderin1781.HethantraveledtotheWestIndiesandfinallywasdischargedandreturnedtoScotlandin1784.
JamesthenwenttoworkinanewcoalminenearGlasgowandin1795marriedChristinaMontgomery.Their10childrenwereborninScotlandbetween1785and1807,ofwhicheightlivedtoadulthood.
FamiliesinScotlandwereinadesperatesituationfromlackofworkandnearstarvation.ThiscausedformationofsocietieswantingCrownsponsoredemigration.ThegovernmentrespondedbyagreeingtosurveyandopennewlandsinCanadaandgrant100acreparcels.Emigrantsweretopayfortheirownpassage,andthegovernmentpaidalumpsumadvancetoeachheadandagaintoeachhead6monthsafterlanding.TheemigrationsocietiesplayedanactiveroleinobtainingfundsforpassagetoCanada.
OneofthefirstmajorsailingsfromScotlandwasinthespringof1819when1,200ScottishimmigrantssailedontheshipsCommerce,Prompt,andBroke.TwoofJaneSnedden’sbrothers,DavidandAlexander,andhersisterJanetwereonthissailingandobtainedlandclaimsinBeckwithTownshipinSeptember,1819.
InOctober1820,ameetingwasheldinGlasgowwithagroupofemigrationsocietieswhocalledthemselves“TheLanarkSocietySettlers.”Theyhadover6,000candidatenamesforpassagetoCanada,waymorecandidatesthanthepassengerspaceavailableinmerchantshipsthenextyear.Atemigrationtime,itisknownthatJamesSneddenpetitionedtheBritishGovernmentforleniencyofaloan.ThepetitionclearlypromotedhisextensivemilitaryserviceinHalifax,theAmericanrevolutionarywar,andtheWestIndies.Althoughnotexplicitlystatedinthereferencetothispetition,onewouldhavetobelievethatthemilitaryrecordwouldpushhimtothetopoftheprioritylistforpassage.SohislifetrajectoryonceagainchangedbecausehegainedpassagetoCanadaforhimselfandseveralofhisfamily.

OnMay11,1821,fourships:theCommerce,DavidofLondon,EarlofBuckinghamshire,andGeorgeCanningsailedfromGreenock,Scotland,themerchantshipportcityforGlasgow,with1,800Scottishimmigrantsonboard.James

CrossingtheNorthAtlanticwasharrowing,somewhatdangerous,andtookfivetosixweeks.Weatherwasproblematic.TherearenoknowndiariesbytheSneddensoftheAtlanticcrossingandfurtherrivertraveluptheStLawrenceRiverthenlandtraveltoLanarkCounty.BelowisadescriptionofAtlanticpassagebythepreviouslymentionedjournalist,JamesMcDonald,whowasaboardoneofthesistershipstotheCommerceinthe1821crossing:
Thewindrose,aheavygalecommenced,andthewavesrolledmountainhigh,andmadeamightynoise.Toseeashipmakingherwayinthemidstofastorm,overtheseloftybillows,isbothgrandandawful.Wenowbecamelikedrunkenmen,reelingandstaggeringtoandfro.Towalkondeckwasimpossible,andtheplaceswerethepotswereerectedforcooking,tumbleddown,sothatwecouldnotgetanyvictualsmadeready–thestormcontinuedfor9days–everyfavorabledaythecaptainorderedallhispassengerstobringuptheirclothesandairthem.Thesickpassengerswerealsoallorderedabove,thosebeingassisted.
Passengerslivedinwhatwascalledthesteeragedeck,locatedbelowthetopdeckandcrewquarters,andjustabovethecargodeck.Formostofthedaypassengerswouldstayinsidethecrampedsteeragedeck.Sicknessandverminwereplentiful.Undoubtedly,therewerepassengerdeathsalongtheway.

TheAtlanticpassagetookabout6weeksandlandedattheportofQuebecCityontheSaintLawrenceRiverinlateJune,1821.ThisjourneywasfarfromoverastravelintheupstreamdirectionoftheStLawrenceRiverandfurtheroverlandtotheinteriorhadtheirowndifficulties.

TraveluptheSt.LawrenceRiver
TheCommerceship’simmigrantparty,numberinginthehundreds,disembarkedandclearedattheQuebecCitycustomhouseontheStLawrenceRiver.ThepartyarrangedforsteamboatpassageupstreamontheSaintLawrenceRivertoMontreal.Thesteamboatwasloadedwith400immigrantsofwhichagreatnumberlodgedontheopendeck.Theygotthoroughlysoakedfromamajornightthunderstorm,wavescomingintotheboat,andstandingwaterontheleesideoftheboat.Theirfoodandbreadbecamespoiled.
UponlandinginMontreal,governmentwagonsweretheretoassisttheminportagearoundtheinfamousLachinerapidsontheeastsideofMontreal,impassablebyearlygenerationsteamboatsoftheday.Luggagewasloadedontowagons.Women,childrenandsickpassengerswerealsoloadedontowagons.Theythentraveled10milestothevillageofLachinewheretheyrestedforfourdays.
InLachinetheyobtained15flat-bottomboatsandthelargepartycontinuedthetripuptheStLawrenceRiver.Theyhadtotraversemultiplesetsofrapids.Whentherapidswereswift,themenhadtogetintowastedeepwaterthathadastonybottomandpulltheboatwithropes.Attimes,theyhadtodisembarkthewomenandchildrenandhavethemwalkalongtheshore.Atseveralrapids,theyhadtoportagetheboatsandgoodsaroundtherapids.

Thehardshipdutyintheriver,accidentlyingestingriverwater,constantlywetclothes,highseasonheat,andsleepingoutdoorsatnighttookitstoll..Somemencouldnotgoonfromweaknessandhadtotakerestplanningtocatchupwiththeirfamilyandthepartylater.Bloodydysenteryandfeverstrucksomemembersand

theydied.ThegroupfinallyfinishedatPrescott,asmalltownjustwestofBrockville.Thetripof120milesfromLachinetoPrescotttook7days.
PrescottiswhereimmigrantsfromtheCommerce,theDavidofLondon,andhalfoftheimmigrantsfromtheEarlofBuckinghamshirerendezvoused.Theirnumberexceeded1000.PrescottservedasastagingareafortheoverlandportionofthejourneytothetownofLanark,thelocationwheregovernmentagentsissuedlandgrants.Eachsocietygrouphadtowaittheirturnfortheoverlandlegof74milestothetownofLanark,limitedbywagonavailabilityfortransportofimmigrantsandtheirgoods.Waitsbeforetravelcouldbeseveralweekstoamonth.Someimmigrantsweretoosicktotravelonrightawayandmoredeathsoccurredinthecamp.
OverlandTraveltoLanarkCounty
ThefirstlegoflandjourneybywagonfromPrescottfollowedtheSt.LawrenceRivertoBrockville,adistanceof12miles,andtooktwodays.
FromBrockville,thewagonsshiftednorthwardintotheinterioronaroutebuiltbythePerthMilitaryEstablishmentin1816,alongthegreenrouteinthemapbelow.

Theroadswereveryprimitiveandswampyattimes.Summerrainmademirefromthelocalheavyclaythatwouldcausebuilduponwheels,horsesgettingstuckandhavingtopullthewagonsoutbyoxen.Andworse,theoverturnofwagonswas

frequentwithinjuriestopassengersandareporteddeathofachild.JohnMcDonald,whosejournalwasusedasareferenceforthispartofthejourney,felloutofawagononhisback,brokearibandhadtowaitfortreatmentuntiltheylaterreachedPerth.Peoplewouldsleeponthefloorsofhouses,barns,occasionalinns,oroutsideifnecessary.
ArrivalinLanarkCounty
VicinityMapandTownshipMapofLanarkCounty
TheroadsimprovedastheygottoPerth.ThetripfromPerthtoLanarkCitywasroutineandtookoneday,onlyslightlyslowedbyhavingtoferryacrosstheLittleMississippiRiversouthofLanark.Thelandtravellegswere60milesand6daystotal,andabout6weeksaftertheirshiplandinginCanadainQuebecCity.Feverwasstillprevalent.
Perthwasestablishedin1815andatthetimewascalled“PerthMilitarySettlement”andwasthefirstofficeofthistypeinthearea.RichmondMilitarySettlement,alittleeastoftheLanarkCountyline,nowasuburbofpresentdayOttawa,wasestablishedin1818.RichmondplacedanumberofScottishandIrishintheeasternTownshipsofLanarkCounty.LanarkMilitaryEstablishmentwasestablishedin1820anticipatingthelargewaveofimmigrantscomingtothearea.Atit’speak,theLanarkofficehandled3,000Scottishsettlersin1820-1822.
Thefirstsettlementwavetothearea,handledmainlybythePerthoffice,wasveteransoftheWarof1812,BritishveteransfromtheEuropeanwar,andsomecivilians,mainlyScottishandIrish.ThePerthofficeperformedlandsurveysdefiningthetownshipsandlandplotswithin,includingthetownshipsofBeckwith,Ramsey,andPakenhamwhereSneddenfamilygroupssettled.
Bythetimethe1821immigrantpartypassedthroughPerththetownalreadywasmaturingfromdailypopulationinflow,twochurches,twobakers,threeblacksmiths,severalstorekeepers,andapostoffice.LanarkCitywasmuchmoreprimitivebutwasthedesignatedofficefortheirpartylandapplications

ImmigrantswouldgototheColonel’sofficeinLanarkwiththeircredentialsandbegivenoneormoreticketsforinspectingsurveyedlots.Again,inthislandwherenothingseemedeasy,selectingalotwasanothertoilingtask.
Youwouldhavetowalkasmuchas20milestoaprospectivelotthroughroadlessareas,findthesurveystakeswithcrudemapsandsomesurveystakesnotexactlyplaced,andtheninspectthefeaturesofthelot.Acommonpracticewasforthreeimmigrantsandapaidguidetobantogetherforaninspectioncycleformutualsupportandcomplementaryskills..Youwouldthenreturntothelandgrantofficeandclaimyourlot.However,ifyoufoundswampyorrockylots,youwouldturninyouroldticketsandobtainnewcandidates.Allthisinaracewheregoodlotswereclaimedfirstandlateronlypoorlotswereleft.Also,exhaustionandsicknesswereanissuefromprolongedexposuretothewilds.
Sotheimmigrantsfinallyarriveattheirtransatlanticparadise,clothingwellworn,thininmoney,somefamilymembersweakordeadfromsickness.Itisthemiddleoffallandawinterof5-6monthsiscoming.HeremanymilesfromPerthorLanark,youhavetoerectatemporaryhutorsmalllogcabin.Thereisalackofgoodsandstockanimalstobuy.Yourlotmaybepartiallyorheavilytimberedandhastobeclearedbeforefarmingcanbegin.
Thissoundsdestitute,butitreallywasn’t.Fishwereplentifulforthetaking,andgamebirdsandgameanimalswereabundant.Churchesandtheirparishionerswereactiveinsupportingnewimmigrants.Oncewinterstarted,themiserablemiredroadsfrozeandbecamecoveredwithsnow.Horsedrawnsledscouldtravelwithease.Foodandlargergoodscouldbetransportedthroughoutthelocalewithoutproblems.ApopularproductatmarketwaslowcostbeeffromtheUSAthatwassleddedin.Goodtimeswerecoming.

AppendixAisacollectionofrecordslocatedontheBeckwithTownshipsettlementofThomasMackie,JaneSnedden,andafewofJane’srelatives.
InthePerthMilitarySettlementlandgrantvolumesthereisarecordofThomasMackiecompletingthetermsofhissettlementdutiesonhislandgrantpropertyonMay7,1824.Thisapprovalisusuallyrecorded3yearsaftertheinitialpossessionoftheproperty.ThisplacesThomasinBeckwithTownship,onhisproperty,inMay,1821.HeisinthecensusofBeckwithTownshipin1822,listedasahouseholdofone.ItisnotknownhowlonghehadbeeninCanadabeforehisBeckwithresidency.
MeanwhileJamesSnedden,hiswife,daughterJaneandsonSamuelarrivedinLanarkCityinAugust,1821.HewasgrantedpropertyrightstoaRamseyTownshipplot,whichheimmediatelytradedforsonAlexander’sBeckwithTownshippropertyandthefamilytookupresidencethere.ThisplacedtheJamesSneddenfamily,DavidSneddenfamily,andThomasMackieinadjacentpropertiesinBeckwithTownshipinlate1821.

ItwouldbenaturalfortheSneddensandThomasMackietocrosseachotherinfarmmatters,andpossiblyinchurchsincemostoftheScottishimmigrantswerequitereligious.NomarriagerecordofThomasMackieandJaneSneddenwaslocated.However,theirfirstchildwasborninJanuary1827,whichplacestheirmarriagedatesometimebetween1822and1826.
ThomasMackieandJaneSneddenhadanexcellentpieceoffarmproperty.TheysolditinNovember,1834toJohnMcDougall.(Moderndayviewsofthisstillworkingandhighlyproductivefarmproperty200yearsisshowninAppendixB).
SometimeafterthesaleoftheirBeckwithfarmproperty,Thomas,Jane,andchildrenleftBeckwithTownship.Theymigratedtoanewpioneerlocation,StVincentTownship,GreyCounty,incurrentdaywesternOntario,arrivinginSeptember,1835.Whytheyleftthisprimeandratherlargepieceoffarmpropertyisnotclear.Maybeitwasjustwanderlustordreamsofricheselsewhere.ThechildrenbornbeforetheirarrivaltoStVincentTownship:
