A letter from
ELEF ★
Welcome to our 11th annual Awards Dinner celebration! The East Lansing
Educational Foundation is so proud to honor our 2011 awardees; they are
reminders that our education community is a community of excellence.
Sitting around you tonight are
teachers and students, business
leaders and neighbors, all united
by the desire to keep East Lan-
sing public education strong.
Tonight is about stories. Listen
to our honorees’ stories as they
receive their awards. Read the
stories around the room that
tell how money raised tonight has real impact in EL classrooms. Tell your story; how
has education impacted your life and the lives of those you love? Are you an ELEF
donor? Tell us why. Are you a teacher who has received an ELEF grant? Tell us about
the difference it made for your teaching. Are you a business leader? Tell us about
your Trojan employees or why you are an ELEF Business Partner for Education.
We hope you enjoy your evening and remember, especially in these unstable
economic times, how important it is to raise private money for East Lansing public
schools. Today’s Trojans will be hosting the 30th Annual Awards Dinner in 2030…
what stories will they tell?

East Lansing Educational Foundation
Good evening, and thank you for coming. This day has been
designated as the day to give thanks to all of you gathered
here tonight, and to take the time to shine the light on a few
honorees that have made unique contributions to our schools.
We are nearing the end of a significant year in our schools. A year
in which our student body experienced the loss of one of their own;
experienced controversy; academic and athletic success; witnessed
huge political battles in Lansing concerning school funding; watched
the emerging democratization of the Middle East , and the unspeakable
losses caused by the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan. It is a full life
for our young people, and they have consistently shown themselves to
be curious, enthusiastic and resilient.
Throughout the year, our East Lansing community has let us know that
they will always be in our corner supporting our efforts to impart the
highest quality education to each and every one of our students. We
hear and appreciate your voices of trust and support, and it is to each
East Lansing student, every day, that we dedicate our best efforts and
our highest hopes.
Thank you again for keeping the needs of our students firmly in your
sights, and for your tireless support of the East Lansing Public Schools.

in Detroit, received her elementary education degree from

to ally local businesses with public education in East Lansing. The campaign will be led by
a group of Founding Partners, with Summit Community Bank’s John Abbott as chairman.
“As a locally owned and managed community bank, we take our community involvement
seriously,” commented Summit Community Bank President and CEO John W. Abbott. “We
believe it’s important to give back to the community that supports us. The East Lansing
Education Foundation and the East Lansing Public Schools are truly a solid part of this com-
munity.” One annual contribution to the campaign supports all eight schools.
