New products key to answering consumers’ needs THAILAND | SET | FOOD | COMPANY VISIT BLOOMBERG ICHI TB l REUTERS ICHI.BK Soaring marketing expenses blamed for profit drop in FY15 ICHI posted a 24.7% y‐y drop in FY15 profit to Bt812.7mn due chiefly to higher selling expenses as a result of increased marketing campaigns in a bid to spur sales. For the year, selling expenses to sales ratio ticked up 3.6% y‐y to 16.1%. However, increased marketing campaigns failed to give sales a boost as initially expected by ICHI in the face of the subdued economic environment and a longer‐than‐usual rainy season and due to excessive repeat promotional campaigns, which failed to excite consumers and led them to buy its products only during the campaigns. Full‐year sales accordingly grew a measly 2.6% y‐y to Bt6,339.6mn New products key to answering consumers’ needs We nudge our FY16 profit outlook for ICHI lower by 8.4% to Bt995.7mn but the new profit target still implies a growth of 22.5% y‐y. In our view, the key growth drivers for ICHI would be: (1) Burgeoning sales: In our new forecast, we assume ICHI will achieve FY16 sales growth of 13.6%
y‐y to Bt7,199.2mn on expectations that much of the growth will come from the recently launched and soon‐to‐be‐launched new products as part of its efforts to better answer consumers’ demand while sales from its existing product portfolio will see only slim growth. Bireley Fruit to Go and Bireley’s 100% orange juice are among its new products to hit the market in 2QFY16.
(2) Better gross profit margins: Due to the prospect of growing sales, which would push its capacity utilization rate higher, we estimate its gross profit margins will expand 0.8% y‐y to 34.3% in FY16.
(3) Lower selling expenses to sales ratio: We expect the pace of decline in its selling expenses to sales ratio to be smaller than previously thought as sales in the past grew only when ICHI launched promotional campaigns. Our forecast puts its selling expenses to sales ratio at 15.8%, down a marginal 0.3% y‐y.
However, sales in Indonesia remain a cause of concern for us after a recent streak of sales misses. More worrisome is how to differentiate its products and satisfy consumers’ demand. No signs are yet in sight that its products currently available in this market will win consumers’ hearts and differ from its competitors. For this reason, it seems to us that sales in the Indonesian market may miss its Bt1bn target this year. ‘NEUTRAL’ rating with FY16 target price of Bt12.60/share Following the above earnings downgrade, we slash our FY16 target price for ICHI to Bt12.60/share. The target is based on a PEG multiple of 1x, assuming two‐year profit CAGR of 16.5% for the period of FY16‐FY17. Despite earnings and target price cuts, we however raise our rating on ICHI shares to ‘NEUTRAL’ from ‘SELL.’ The new rating reflects (i) more but limited upside from current trading levels and (ii) a lack of new catalysts to drive strong sales growth despite the planned launch of new products Bireley Fruit to Go and Bireley’s 100% orange juice in 2QFY16 on view that it would be difficult for ICHI to compete with strong established competitors in these new product markets and its products may not be much different from its competitors in the eyes of consumers.
