The holiday season is upon us again. This is a special time of the year; a time to celebrate christmas, Hanukkah, winter Solstice and many other religious and secular festivals. it’s a time of the year for good times and laughter, joy and companionship. but for many, all the good is overshadowed by money, commer-cialism and stress.
before moving to baja, the holiday season to Rachel and i was holiday Tv ads before Thanksgiving (which we both dislike), traffic, crowded stores and parking lots and spend-ing too much money. we never looked for-ward to it and counted the days until the new year, when the world would become “normal” again. but that’s all changed.
Today, we see things differently, we see the season for what it is - a time of joy. baja trimmed away the holiday fat, leaving only the joy and spirit. it slowed things down, giving us both a new perspective. baja made the holi-days a special time for us again.
in this edition, we talk with four couples that call baja home to find out what makes the holi-day season on the peninsula special to them. our hope is that you too will find baja the ideal destination for the holiday.
Happy Holidays,john & Rachel Pack

when most people think about an ideal or traditional christmas, they instinctively con-jure up images of freshly fallen snow, a crackling fire drying out icy mittens, and bing crosby crooning “white christmas” in the back-ground. images of the hustle and bustle of over-crowded malls, must-have deals and bumper to bumper traffic may also come to mind. This mix-ture of idealized traditions and the reality of what has become an overly commercialized and stress-ful season leave many exhausted and tense just thinking about the christmas…unless you live in or visit baja for the holidays.
christmas in baja may mean many things to many different people; but with the intricate rela-tionship between old and new, the peaceful sur-roundings and the deep and genuine sense of community all throughout baja, christmas is one of the best times of year to be here. The weather is known for being the most pleasurable in the world, with bright warm days and cool comfort-able nights. The sea, perfectly hued and foamy, crashes against the untouched shores making its own classic holiday music that simultaneously calms and enlivens any holiday get-together. The people, a mix of content and welcoming locals, ex-patriates who smile knowing they are truly fortu-nate to live in paradise, and the visiting snowbirds and holiday travelers all blend together to make the true meaning of the holidays come alive in all of the tiny communities that dot the coastline up and down the peninsula.
many of those who call baja home during the winter months enjoy spending the holidays catch-ing up with other part time residents and spending the holidays enjoying baja together. other expatri-ates or snowbirds enjoy having their families make the trek to baja to relish in a holiday season without the cold and snow. la bahía de concepción (bay of conception) beaches are bustling with Rvs, campers and tents belonging to those who know the joy that can be found in the most unique and peaceful locations. Those who love adventure over peace and quiet can be found spending christmas on the east cape beaches. los barriles and la ventana bring many adrenaline junkies to the area with an offering of the best wind and beaches for kite boarding and windsurfing. with this crowd, wind and riding the surf beats roasting chestnuts any day.
The best part of spending the holidays in baja is that there is no road map, no tradition that has to be followed, no commercialization unless you want there to be, and no right or wrong way to
hang the lights. Those who visit or l i v e here for christmas make it their o w n individual holiday, all the while openly partaking in the local celebrations. T h e s e celebrations have somehow managed to escape the ubiquitous commercialization and exploitation seen north of the border.
for vanice french and Penny Nask of San fe-lipe, showing their family and friends how peace-ful christmas can be in baja is important. They say, “The holidays are special because family and friends come down to enjoy them with us. There is less emphasis on gift giving to each other and more on giving to those less fortunate in our com-munity. our guests are surprised to arrive here and find we do not have cable television or a land line phone. after their initial shock of ‘being off the grid’, they start to enjoy the stars, the sea and the sunshine.” as for holiday hustle and bustle at their home, they add, “getting away from the rush of their daily lives gives them an opportunity to enjoy the visit with cooking, board games, cards, napping and sitting around the outdoor fire pit.” while family and friends may visit, they contend their baja winter friends are always a huge part of the festivities.
jackie and marty alameda, of Puerto Nuevo, really keep the giving spirit of the holidays alive in their baja community. People from their area sometimes ‘adopt’ an area orphan for the holi-days and provide much needed presents such as clothing, shoes and toys. goodies for the kids are also a given. The alameda’s say, “one year my mother-in-law and i baked 72 dozen cookies for our ‘adopted’ child to share with his friends at the orphanage.” They also spend a great deal of their holiday time attending charity benefits in the area. This is where they also typically catch up with friends they have not seen in awhile. as for big holiday meals filled with hour upon hour of prep time in the kitchen, the alameda’s and their circle of friends have an interesting spin on that exhausting tradition. They say, “Sometimes we have a ‘progressive dinner’ in our neighborhood. That way we are all close to home and no one has to fix the entire meal…snacks and drinks at one house, soup at another, salad at another, the main course, the desserts, and the night cap.” Having this sort of traveling holiday meal means cleanup and cooking is much easier on everyone.
jim and Shirley moore, of San felipe, take in and treasure the art of relaxing as part of their holiday in baja. They say they can see the hap-piness on every ones face as if they all know just

We thought we’d share a few popular Mexican Christmas gifts ideas that you may want to add to your holiday shopping list.
Oaxacan Wood CarvingCreated by the same families in the small town of San Martin Tilcajete
for decades.
Beaded MaskCreated by the Huichol Indians, a small tribe of approximately 10,000 Indians living in central western Mexico.
Aztec Dolls100 percent handcrafted by the Mexica (Ma-she-ka) Indians of Central Mexico, the descendants of the the great Aztec Empire.
Mexican Bubble GlassMexican blown glass was called Mexican bubble glass because of all the bubbles produced when blowing the molten glass.
Day of the Dead Folk FiguresThe skeleton figures and sculptures are made from a variety of materials including hand-painted sheet metal, paper mache and clay.
Virgen De Guadalupe T-ShirtThe Virgen of Guadalupe is universally revered in Mexico, which
doesn’t mean her image is somehow sanctified - it’s everywhere.
Sterling Silver Jewelry from TaxcoTaxco is a beautiful town located in the mountains of the west coast of Mexico
world famous for handcrafted sterling silver jewelry.
Mexican Christmas Gifts Ideas how lucky they are to be in Baja. Their relaxed attitude makes their open door holiday policy ideal. They welcome “whoever shows up. Friends and family come and go throughout
the holidays. It’s beautiful.” They encourage anyone to visit despite reservations about Bajabeing an atypical Christmas destination. They say, “The spirit of the holiday season is alive and well in Baja. All of the fun, but without the traffic.”
Joe and Julie Verespej, of Loreto, also love the relax factor but still love the tradition behind
a typical American Christmas. They say, “Wefavor the traditional American fare. We could eat Mexican food every day of our lives and be happy, but a turkey is special.” They also add the lights to a palm tree, putting a Baja twist to the Christmas tree.
While Baja allows for complete freedom
from the pains of traffic and freedom to make the holiday more personal and less con-structed, the local traditions are respected and enjoyed by all in the community, be they part time, full time, or passersby. In Baja, the Christmas season last longer than one day. The season officially kicks off on December16th, 9 days before Christmas day, and ends with Kings Day on January 6th. The 9 days, or Las Posadas (The Inns), are filled with par-ties at different houses. Businesses typically close during this time so all can enjoy the holiday. At the end of the 9 days in most towns, children who represent Mary and Joseph set out to knock on doors and find one that will accommodate them just as Mary and Joseph did on Christ-mas Eve. They are fol-lowed by townspeople singing and carrying candles. The house that opens their door to the weary travelers is the site of a huge community party. Placing the baby Jesus in the nativity scene at this time is a much honored tradition, as is attendance of midnight mass. Praying the rosary is also part
of the neighborhood-wide Christmas celebra-tion. Steeped heavily in Catholic tradition, na-tivity scenes are prevalent and complete with wise men and animals.
After the official festivities of Christmas Eveand Christmas day are celebrated, Baja chil-dren write letters to the wise men asking for gifts. They attach these letters to balloons and set them free together in the town square and then place their shoes on windowsills so they
can be filled with trea-sures. On January 6th, they awaken to find all they have asked for.
The religious sig-nificance of the holiday brings everyone into the festivities and is filled with happiness and togetherness. Whilemodern acts of deco-rating trees and buying expensive gifts do take place in Baja, the stress
and anxiety that have overcome even the most laid back celebrations in the United States are not found in Baja. The sound of waves, the intense sunsets, dessert sand, and subtle breeze makes everyday more peaceful and joyous, which is what the holiday season is all about.
For Jim & Shirley the San Felipe holidays are about fun and relaxing.
Vanice and Penny enjoy sharing the Baja holiday with friends the San Felipe holidays.
After 15+ years of living in Baja, Jackie and Marty couldn’t love Baja or each other more.
Joe & Julie enjoy the traditional holiday meal with friends in the Loreto seaside home.

las Posadas (Spanish for “the inns”) is a nine-day celebration with origins in Spain be-ginning december 16 and ending december 25. it is a yearly tradition for many catholic mexicans and some other latin americans and symbolizes the trials which mary and joseph endured before finding a place to stay where jesus could be born, based on the passage in the New Testament, the gospel of luke 2:1-9.
Typically, each family in a neighborhood will schedule a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of december and finishing on the 24th. every home has a nativity scene and the hosts of the Posada act as the innkeepers. The neighborhood chil-dren and adults are the pilgrims (peregrinos), who have to request lodging by going house
to house singing a traditional song about the pilgrims. all the pilgrims carry small lit candles in their hands, and four people carry small statues of joseph leading a donkey, on which mary is riding. The head of the procession will have a candle inside a paper lamp shade. at each house, the resident responds by refusing lodging (also in song), until the weary travel-ers reach the designated site for the party, where mary and joseph are finally recognized and allowed to enter. once the “innkeepers” let them in, the group of guests come into the home and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray (typically, the Rosary).
latin american countries have continued to celebrate this holiday to this day, with very few changes to the tradition. in some places, the final location may be a church instead of a home. individuals may actually play the vari-ous parts of mary (maría) and joseph with the expectant mother riding a real donkey (burro), with attendants such as angels and shepherds acquired along the way, or the pilgrims may carry images of the holy personages instead. at the end of the long journey, there will be christmas carols (villancicos), children will break open piñatas by striking these colorful paper-maché objects with bats while blind-folded to obtain candy hidden inside, and there
A community tradition of reenacting the trials of Mary and Josephwill be a feast. Traditionally, it is expected to meet all the invitees in a previous procession.
Lyrics from the traditional Pidiendo Posada:
Outside Singersin the name of heaven,
i ask you for shelterbecause my beloved wifecan continue no longer.
Inside SingersThis is no inn,
continue on your way.i am not about to open.
You may be a scoundrel.
The song continues until joseph and mary are finally recognized and allowed inside with
everyone singing in unison:
let us sing with joy,all bearing in mind
that jesus, joseph and maryhonor us by having come.

Geminids Meteor Shower - Best Meteor Shower in the HeavensDecember 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. The peak of the shower this year should occur on the night of December 13 and morning of the 14th, although some meteors should be visible from December 6 - 19. Some estimates say there could be as many as 120 meteors an hour visible from dark-sky locations. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Gemini. The Moon will set early in the evening setting the sky up for a spectacular show. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.
2nd Total Lunar Eclipse in 2010
December 21 - A total lunar eclipse will take place on December 20/21, 2010. It will be vis-ible about 9:30pm PST on Dec 21st in N. & S.
America just after midnight. Since the Moonwill be almost directly overhead from these lo-cations, this should be an excellent chance to view a rare total lunar eclipse. The beginning of the total eclipse will be visible from northern Europe just before sunrise. The end of the total eclipse will be visible rising at sunset for Japanand northeastern Asia. It is the second of two lunar eclipses in 2010. The first was a partial lunar eclipse on June 26, 2010.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth so that the earth blocks the sun’s rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle. Hence, there is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse. The type and length of an eclipse depend upon the Moon’s location relative to its orbital nodes. Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place. Some lunar eclipses have been associated with important historical events.

The waters that surround Baja are home to the world’s most incredible and amazing eco-systems. The waters are filled with aquatic life that continues to evoke mystery, wonder and respect. Of all the creatures, large and small, that call the warm and welcoming waters off the shore of Baja home, none mystify and capture the hearts of mankind more so than whales. The largest most majestic mammals of the sea mesmerize anyone lucky enough to watch their massive bodies navigate the water, break through waves, splash their enormously strong tails and give birth to their young.
Whale watching off the coast of Baja is an experience that makes the to-do list of any ad-venturer who desires to see the earth’s most fascinating creatures up close and in their natural habitat.
While there are many types of whales that call Baja home, none are more revered than the gray whale. Gray whales are the largest and can measure over 100 feet long. They
can weigh up to 150 tons. These giants of the sea also make the longest migration of any creature on Earth. They travel over 10,000 miles a year making their migration from the frigid Bering Sea off of Alaskato the warm, clear, and tranquil lagoons off of the coast of Baja. They spend the summer months enjoy-ing the constant sunshine and plentiful supply of zoo-plankton off the shores of Alaska then navigate down
to spend January through March in the waters of Baja. They give birth at this time and spend their Baja vacations teaching their calves to swim and play, preparing them for the long trip back up north. Visitors at this time can see hundreds of whales birthing their young in the shallow lagoons. Trips out to sea to enjoy the sights, sounds, and the once in a lifetime touch of a gray whale are hugely popular.
During the 1840’s and on into the mid-20th century, over hunting by whaling ships great-ly diminished and nearly wiped out the gray whale population. With roughly only 500 left in existence around the 1940’s, the Mexicangovernment moved to protect the waters and the whales from the brink of extinction. Scien-tists also intervened, realizing these mammals of the sea have a lot to teach us measly hu-mans. Thanks to efforts started in the 1940’s, the gray whale population has recovered to over 20,000 and is no longer endangered. The lagoons where they blissfully birth and intro-
duce their young to the world are protected waters and give people the best opportunity to see these creatures.
Other whale species that can be seen off the coast of Baja are pilot whales, finback whales and blue whales.
The whales enjoy watching and studying people as much as we do them. The moms and young alike will often nudge up against boats, looking to be touched. Scientists be-lieve they seek out human touch as a form of pleasure stimuli. Most whale watching tours in Baja can promise the closest encounters you can find of Earth. However, as with any unpre-dictable and wild animal, respect and caution are advised. Reputable whale watching exhibi-tions on Baja boats will teach tourists all they need to know before they experience the larg-est and most interesting creatures that share our world.
