8 ABORIGINAL WAYS Learning techniques that benet everyone
Approaching learning through narrative. Learning from others’ narratives, or through sharing our own. Involving learners in introspection and analysis while drawing lessons from narratives.
Learning journeys drawn as maps or diagrams with pointsof understanding indicated along the way, not just at the end. Explicitly mapping or visualising processes, and giving a holistic image of tasks.
Can include testing knowledge through experience, introspection and practice. Applying intra-personal and kinaesthetic skills to thinking and learning. Judging the validity of new knowledge independently.
Using images and metaphors to understand concepts, processes and content. Knowledge coded in symbols and metaphors is a tool for learning complex material.
All knowledge is drawn from the living landscape. Place-based learning. Linking content to local land and place (contextualising). Physical elements can provide important metaphors for concepts.
Problems solved laterally through making connections with existing knowledge. Repetition and returning to concepts for deeper understanding. Non-sequential, continuous and relational.
Knowledge gained by backtracking through the context and the whole form in supported stages, then reproduced independently. Seeing an overall meaning, purpose and structure first and then breaking it down into manageable chunks.
Non-local information is viewed and used from local standpoints for community benefit, with all learning returned to the community. Making connections to real-life purposes, contexts and communities or teams.

Using Orientation Labs to Promote Student Engagement in Lab Projects
Ruben PhillipsSchool of Medical & Health Sciences, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, Western Australia, 6027.
Orientation Labs The idea behind orientation labs developed
as a means to reduce techno-anxiety and promote engagement in a Lab Project.
Students also noted that they spent a disproportionate amount of time working out the capabilities of the equipment.
This reduced their enjoyment and wonder during the lab experience.
Leading to reduced creativity in their investigations and poor engagement in the lab project.
Background SCH2111 is a second year physiology
unit and a final unit in a triplet of anatomy and physiology units offered to students in the biomedical sciences.
It has a lab project worth 30%.
Additionally, this unit services other degree programs eg nutrition, exercise science, psychology.
The cohort (average enrolment 100) has a diverse appreciation of what lab projects are.
Prior experience showed that many students struggled with the lab project due to equipment anxiety as they lacked familiarity with the technology used in the lab classes.
Students’ Comments from 2015 UTEI.
“The best aspects of the unit were the hands on laboratory classes. These classes allowed me to apply my thinking and learn
in new and exciting ways than before. It was interesting being exposed to the
testing equipment in the labs.”
“The Labs and being able to conduct experiments that linked with the lectures
such as using the Powerlab to conduct nerve conduction studies etc. I found that this allowed me to engage with the unit
content.”
“The chance to experience a real lab work and 'research' and the assignment about
research methodology is completely important in further study.”

Let’s Learn 10 Bush Tucker Words: Learning and keeping culture in Aboriginal communities
through the use of mobile technologies
This is a joint research project between the Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies (CSaLT) at Edith Cowan University & the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA).
This project targeted the Engagement and Connections element. It aimed at developing a partnership between the school, the community and the ECU research team.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Overall conceptual framework
METHODS
Sample • Two remote primary schools and associated
communities from the Kimberley region were recruited
• One class (approximately 20 students) and their teacher were invited to participate
Data collection • Community consultations • Consultations with schools • Trial and refinement of an iPad-based Filemaker
Go database • Ongoing engagement with the community • Development and establishment of an agreed
partnership between relevant stakeholders

Testing Learning
BACKGROUND The CulturePad project aimed to investigate the potential of linking local Indigenous communities and schools in an educational project designed to preserve culture through the use of mobile and online technologies.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS CSaLT & AISWA acknowledge the contribution of the AEWs, teachers, schools and communities of Kulkarriya and Yiyili
THE APPLICATION • One of the apps developed as part of the
CulturePad project was ‘Let’s learn 10 bush tucker words’.
• Seamon, an Aboriginal Education Worker (AEW) from Kulkarriya Community, used his cultural knowledge to create a list of 10 bush tucker words to learn both Walmajarri and English.
OTHER APPS IN DEVELOPMENT • Aboriginal Artist Story • Significant Community Landmark Story • Indigenous Plant Usage • Night Star Community Story
CURRENT APPS During a workshop with AEWs held in Broome in April 2016, the following apps were developed:
• BodyParts: developed by Yette (Walmajarri) • BushTucker: developed by Seamon (Walmajarri) • Family: developed by Julieanne (Walmajarri) • KriolWords: developed by Lurlene • Trees: developed by Vondine (Walmajarri)
CHALLENGES • Need for face-to-face communication • Varying ICT knowledge • High staff turnover • Consistency of internet connection
