SWORD Deposit
Repositories must interface with:– each other– users – other applications within the institution– services in the wider information landscape
There was no common deposit API or protocol
So JISC funded SWORD build on the Deposit API group
Partners: UKOLN; University of Southampton (EPrints); University of Aberystwyth (DSpace, Fedora, reference client); Intrallect (intraLibrary)
SWORD Deposit
– SWORD profiles the Atom Publishing Profile …– “[…] an application-level protocol for publishing and editing Web resources”– SWORD tested on: EPrints; DSpace; Fedora; intraLibrary– Open source implementation client now available on SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sword-app/ – Intrallect built Desktop Deposit tool to drag-and-drop resources into intraLibrary (with or without metadata)– More information:

IntraLibrary SWORD Desktop ToolOur SWORD Desktop Deposit tool supports:
• Drag-and-drop desktop deposit:– Any file type– IMS Content Packages with metadata– Bulk deposit
• Configuration of which collection(s) to deposit to• Immediate publication on deposit (or not)• Still allows for:
– automatic metadata and licensing generation– manual metadata augmentation– quality checking– all other workflow actions after publication

FeedForward: another step
• FeedForward is a JISC-funded tool• Pulls in feeds at one end• Pushes them out to services at the other• All in one easy-to-use desktop interface• Pulls in from RSS feeds, pipes,
aggregators, OAI-PMH harvesters, SRU• Pushes out to:
– Social bookmarking services (e.g. de.li.cious)– Blogs– Repositories via SWORD implementation
FeedForward & intraLibrary
• FeedForward allows you to gather several feed items …
• Then in one drag-and-drop action, deposit them in an IMS Content Package, with metadata, into intraLibrary
• Metadata comes from the tool, plus metadata added at upload using an intraLibrary template
• Let’s see…
Thanks …
• JISC for funding SWORD• The other SWORD partners• Julie Allinson (York University) for her SWORD slides• Charles Duncan (CEO, Intrallect) for his intraLibrary
Connect slides• Scott Wilson (JISC CETIS, Bolton University) for co-
creating FeedForward, and all his support prior to this presentation.
