WE MEAN BUSINESS. EAST NEW YORK is a model for connecting community voices and business development through design.
Spearheaded by AIGA/NY, the leading graphic design association, in partnership with the Local Development Corporation of East New York, our research-action takes place in the context
of the East New York Sustainable Community Plan, and has directly involved other key stakeholders, including Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, The Coalition for Community Advancement in
East New York/Cypress Hills and ARTs East New York.
By using participatory processes, including several workshops and one-to-one conversations with small business owners, we created “ENY, We Mean Business, Unite to Stay,” an advocacy campaign that aims
to enhance small businesses’ awareness of current changes in the neighborhood in face of rezoning measures; fast-track their access to existing business development services offered by local nonprofits,
and empower owners to unite as a merchant alliance.
The multi-faceted campaign consists of this banner in the I-biz, a series of guerrilla-style posters, flyers and digital, as well as user-friendly components — including a website and an SMS alert system
to connect small business to upcoming training workshops offered by local LDCs. Ultimately the goal of the campaign is to empower the neighborhood as a resilient place
with an enhanced identity and strong messaging.
This project is supported by funds from the New York City Department of Small Business Services and the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Neighborhood Challenge grant program.
Additional funds for this banner were also provided by the East Brooklyn Business Improvement District.
