Summer/Fall 2020
This is the first issue of the MB&B newsleerwhich has been in hibernaon for quite a fewyears. A lot has happened in the departmentduring this me, however, our coverage inthis issue will start from January 2020. Wewelcome input from faculty, students, staffand alumni , anyone connected with MB&Bnow or in the past. All suggesons willreceive our prompt aenon and a responsefrom us is assured. We would also welcomenews and updates from our affiliates andalumni which we will include in forthcoming

50+ Years ofMB&B
New Challengeswith Experience
A Note from the Chair I am grateful to take on the Chair posion in this historic 51st year of theMB&B Department. In these challenging circumstances, it is incrediblycomforng to know we are well posioned to engage long neglectedchallenges as well as the new situaons in which we find ourselves. Wehave the rare luxury of vast experience with an incredibly strong team, having many years of experience in educaon, researching, problemsolving, and above all collaborang and working together.
This past year, thanks to Mark Hochstrasser’s leadership as DepartmentChair before me, we added more strength with amazing faculty, postdocs, students and staff newly welcomed to MB&B. The Department maintainsand has even expanded its strong leadership roles throughout theUniversity. There is no beer way to celebrate this Golden Jubilee than touse this momentum to rise above previously insurmountable acvaonbarriers and advance training and achievement in Molecular Biophysics andBiochemistry...together!
Looking ahead, MB&B is pushing forward in this 51st year with newiniaves and didaccs to encourage and enable students and faculty toachieve in basic research, entrepreneurship and educaon. MB&B is alsotaking a lead to face directly and address structural racism in our teachingand laboratories. Finally, we are eager to support our people’s ability toachieve excellence despite the ever-shiing landscape of working underCOVID.
With respect and gratude,
Enrique M. De La CruzProfessor and Chair of Molecular Biophysics & BiochemistryHead of Branford College

Welcome New Faculty
Franziska Bleichert Franziska Bleichert joined the MB&BDepartment in January 2020 as anAssistant Professor. Her lab's researchfocuses on understanding the function ofmacromolecular machines involved inchromosome replication and inmaintaining genome stability. Using acombination of structural biology, biochemical and biophysical approaches,Franziska's lab aims to elucidate howthese machines operate at a mechanisticlevel and, in the long-term, apply theseinsights towards developing new drugstargeting genome instablity.
Lilian Kabeche Lilian (Lily) Kabeche joined the MB&Bdepartment in 2019 as an AssistantProfessor. Lily has been fascinated withthe fact that many solid tumors exhibitanueploidy chromosome instability. However, targeting this phenotype hasbeen fairly ineective. Her research labfocuses on investigating the molecularmechanisms that ensure chromosomestability. Specifically, her lab focuses onthe interplay between the DNA damagerepair pathway and the mitotic machinery.Lily and her lab combine cell biology, microscopy, and biochemistry to try toanswer these questions.
Candie Paulsen Candice (Candie) Paulsen joined theMB&B department in January 2018 as anAssistant Professor. Currently, Candie’sgroup is combining membrane proteinbiochemistry, chemical biology, andstructural biology to understand how theWasabi receptor, TRPA1, an important ionchannel involved in initiating pain signalsin humans, is regulated under normal andpathological states. This work is carriedout with an eye towards uncovering novelavenues for analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent development.
Kai "Jack" Zhang Kai (Jack) Zhang joined MB&B in January2019 as an Assistant Professor. His labworks on the mechanisms of cellular cargotransport and ciliary motility. He isinterested in dyneins and dynein-relatedcomplexes for their fascinating roles in theintracellular and intraflagellar transports, cell division, organelle positioning, cellmotility, neurodevelopment, neurodegeneration, viral infection, andtheir elaborate mechanisms of regulation.Kai is also passionate about cryo-EMETmethods to bridge the large gaps in ourunderstanding of complicated high-levelcellular activities from their structures.

The Frederic M. Richards LectureDavid Baker - University of WashingtonInstute of Protein Design
The Coming of Age of denovo Protein DesignHost Don Engelman wrote: On February 10, DavidBaker presented the F. M. Richards lecture: “TheComing Age of de novo Protein Design” to apacked audience. Fred was deeply interested inways to think about folded proteins, ranging fromhis famous work on protein surfaces to his studiesof interior packing. Fred’s work was informed bythe emerging determinaons of proteinstructures as the era of Structural Biology tookhold, and therefore depended on the results ofmolecular evoluon. David Baker’s work hasprogressively examined ways to infer structures ofproteins from their amino acid sequences, resulng in his widely used program,ROSETTA. The successes of his computaonalapproaches have now led to a most ambious andexcing new step, the design of folded, funconal
proteins that are not the consequences ofevoluonary selecon.
