114 5WILLIAM ROBERTS (1895-1980) "Gas Alert", signed, titled and dated 1919, lower left, watercolour and pencil, 8" x 5"
This watercolour is a superb example of the artist's output during his time as an official war artist in the years 1918-1919. Here the influences of cubism, such as the carefully angled hats and linear, sculptural faces combine to give a bitter edge to the implied horrors that the subject matter represents. Comparable significant works from these years can be found in the Imperial War Museum "A Shell Dump France 1918-1919" and "The First German Gas Attack at Ypres 1918" in the National Gallery of Canada.
Provenance: Aquired directly from the artist by the family of the vendor and thence by descent.
