The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology ispleased to announce the appointment of Dr RobertoRomero as our newest Associate Editor. Dr Romero’snomination brings great distinction to our Journal.
Dr Romero is the Chief of the Perinatology ResearchBranch of the National Institute of Child Health andHuman Development, housed in the State of Michigan.After receiving his undergraduate degree, he obtainedhis Doctor of Medicine degree (magna cum laude) fromthe University del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela, andcompleted his residency in obstetrics and gynecology andfellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Yale University.He then joined the faculty at Yale University, becomingassociate professor in only 4 years. In 1992, he was ap-pointed Chief of the Perinatology Research Branch at theNational Institutes of Health.
Dr Romero is extraordinarily well known both in theUnited States and internationally for his work on prena-tal diagnosis of congenital anomalies, as well as his revo-lutionary work on infection and prematurity. He haspublished several books, including the outstanding andacclaimed Prenatal Diagnosis of Congenital Anomalies. Hehas published more than 300 original articles, the major-ity having brought our scientific community a long wayforward in understanding the mechanisms by which in-fection leads to premature labor and delivery. Recently,
he pioneered the concept of the “fetal inflammatory re-sponse syndrome,” suggesting that fetal inflammation islinked to the onset of premature labor and that the mul-tisystemic involvement in this condition can lead to fetalinjury such as brain damage, which predisposes to thesubsequent development of cerebral palsy. Many of DrRomero’s papers have been published in the AmericanJournal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Furthermore, he hasserved for many years as a reviewer for our Journal and isamong the most frequently suggested reviewers by au-thors submitting new manuscripts to us.
For his accomplishments and contributions, DrRomero has received many awards, including the Presi-dent’s Achievement Award from the Society for Gyneco-logic Investigation and Research Excellence Awards fromthe Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has been in-vited as visiting professor at prestigious universities world-wide and has, for many years, shared with visitingresearch fellows from around the world his knowledgeand thirst for understanding through basic and clinicalresearch.
Dr Romero’s energy and insight are legendary, and hisaddition to our already outstanding team of Editors willgreatly enhance the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gy-necology.
