Doug has more than 35 years of architectural design experience with 21 of those years designing golf clubhouses and golf developments throughout the West and beyond.
The completed clubhouses range from modest daily fee golf operations to elegant full service country clubs. He has worked successfully with individual developers on residential golf developments, as well as boards and building committees in private clubs. He draws on a career of discussion with developers, members, golfers, golf professionals, caddy masters, executive chefs, food & beverage managers, banquet directors and general managers, as well as direct observation of clubhouses in use at all hours of the day and night—continually testing and adjusting concepts with the people that live and breathe service to golfers and club members.
Doug has worked concurrently with some of the legends of golf course design—Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman, Tom Weiskopf, Peter Jacobson, Johnny Miller, Bob Cupp, Art Hills, Damian Passcuzo, Ron Freame and Arthur Hills. An early lesson learned—its all about the golf, and the golf course always wins.
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS
Doug Sault was Project Architect for the clubhouse at Desert Highlands when he started at William Zmistowski Associates over 25 years ago. Desert Highlands resurrected and hosted the revival of The Skins game and set the bar for golf clubhouses to enter in the desert southwest. Golf Magazine named Desert Highlands the third best clubhouse in the world, behind Royal & Ancient and Balustrol. The clubhouse and development won every design award available—AIA, AISD, ASLA and ULI. The bar and the market’s expectation have been rising ever since.
Sherwood Country Club for David Murdoch followed a few years later—hosting The Tiger Woods Foundation/Chevron World Challenge. The country club provides an elegant setting of rooms and terraces for Hollywood celebrities and the power brokers of southern California.
The Oregon Golf Club continues a tradition of English Arts & Crafts architecture begun in the neighborhoods of nearby Portland in the twenties. The clubhouse overlooks the driving range, the Williamette River and Mt. Hood fifty miles beyond.
Interlachen Country Club was originally built in 1911 and has been the site of historic moments in golf including—Bobby Jones famous ‘lily pad’ shot to seal his Grand Slam in 1930, the rise of Patty Berg as a force in women’s golf and the 1993 Walker Cup—US victorious 19 to 5. In 1998, Doug was Project Architect for a significant capital improvements including new member dining spaces and banquet rooms resulting in an impressive new roofscape that served as a backdrop for a victorious Solheim Cup in 2002 and the 63rd U.S. Women’s Open.
The common thread is each clubhouse is appropriate to the client’s vision and their unique sites—Desert Highlands is a desert clubhouse, Sherwood is an elegant setting, Oregon GC is at home in the Pacific Northwest and the renovation at Interlachen CC is respectful of the long tradition of golf in Minneapolis.

The Golf Cottages at the Broadmoor consist of six single story cottages lining the 18th fairway on the historic East Course—site of the 2008 Senior Open and the 2011 Women’s Open. The Cottages include 41 hotel guest rooms or suites with connecting parlors and terraces.
The Cottages recently opened to rave reviews and full occupancy in a decidedly less than rave economy.

Completed over a five year period, this residential resort community is the first resort village in the nation to become LEED Certified. Prior to construction, the project went through a nearly four-year process to address environmental and community concerns. As a result, the Northstar design satisfied more than 130 conditions to protect water quality and other natural resources, while complementing and improving the Lake Tahoe region. The Village is the starting point for sweeping improvements to this 8,000 acre highly ranked ski area.

The Ritz-Carlton Highlands campus at mid-mountain in Northstar-at-Lake-Tahoe
The Ritz-Carlton Highlands is located at mid-mountain at the Northstar Ski Resort halfway between Truckee and Lake Tahoe in northern California. It is linked to the ski village below by road and a high speed ski lift that lands between the Lodge and the Club.
The resort includes a Lodge with 172 rooms, 75 residences and 75 vacation club ownership units. The concept features a “Headhouse” reminiscent of the early national park lodges of the northwest but offering exceptional service and thoroughly modern facilities. The resort offers ski in/ski out for guests and owners, along with a 19,000 S.F. full service spa and conference facilities with casual to fine dining. My role was coordinating interior design in public spaces, spa and guest rooms.

The Ritz-Carlton Highlands Club is ski in/ski out vacation club ownership. It was designed to include 75 vacation club ownership units in five stories over 116 parking spaces to be built in three phases. Amenities include an owner’s lounge with bar and kitchen opening onto a pool, fitness, skier services with ski storage, owner storage with full services available from The Ritz Carlton Highlands Hotel immediately adjacent. The hotel and club are linked to The Village at Northstar below via high speed chairlift that lands between the Club and the Hotel. Build out at 284,172 S.F. My role was to the coordination of interior finishes in public space and units in the early phases of design.

The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton Highlands will be constructed in two phases with six stories of 61 residences over 80 parking spaces. . The Residences offers ski in/ski out , Owners lounge with kitchen, ski lockers, fitness, ski valet and the full services of the adjacent Ritz-Carlton hotel. The Residences range from 1660 sf to 7,250 sf with 2 to 5 bedrooms. The complete facility will be over 232,388 SF.

Pursuing LEED Certification
The Westin Riverfront Resort, at the gates of Beaver Creek on the Eagle River, is the last landmark site in Avon. The Resort provides a connection from the town to the ski mountain via open plaza access to a new gondola located on the resort property.
The hotel offers 210 condominium hotel units in ranging in size from studio king to three bedroom units plus 88 lockoff rooms. A 23,ooo S.F. spa and wellness center, as well as the 120 seat signature chef restaurant, face the Eagle River. The 4,000 S.F. ballroom is situated to maximize views and provide a venue for fine dining. The 19 acre site includes a 25m lap pool and three hot tubs. My role was coordination of interior architecture in public spaces, restaurant, spa and guest rooms.

With Desert Highlands, Dick Bailey, Jim Barlett and Lyle Anderson set the bar in Scottsdale for residential golf developments for decades to come. Jack Nicklaus designed a signature desert course with crossing barrancas and long flanking sand bunkers to protect the high Sonoran vegetation from fairway irrigation and punishing the errant ball. The clubhouse was conceived as an organic land form wrapped in and around ‘Clubhouse Rock’. The interior detailing is reminiscent of early Native Americans, as well as early Spanish influences. Furnishings, finishes and accessories are drawn from the southwest as well as the English golf tradition to create a golf club in the desert. The Golfer’s Grill overlooks an oasis of practice greens among the Palo Verde trees that lead golfers to the 1st and 10th tees, and collect golfers from 18 all under the watchful eye of the golf shop. The two tiered dining room looks south through the rocks at the lights of the city well below and approaching thunderstorms. An unusually intimate bar opens on one of the many sandstone terraces that circle ‘Clubhouse Rock’ and look off over the valley below. Desert Highlands clubhouse and development went on to win every design award available including being named Third Best Clubhouse in the World by Golf Magazine, following the venerable Royal and Ancient, and Ballusrol.

The Oregon Golf Club is sited on 460 acres of forest ringed farmland sloping down to the Willamette River and dominated by spectacular views of Mt. Hood and the Cascades 50 miles to the east. Peter Jacobsen, Jim Hardy and Ken Kavanaugh joined forces to design the championship golf course. The front nine rolls through open farmland scattered with magnificent oaks and maples, while the back nine winds through fir forests and back to the 34,000 square foot clubhouse—focusing on the natural beauty of Oregon as originally directed by the developer—Daioh International. The clubhouse continues the tradition of English Arts & Craft architecture that defined Portland’s early neighborhoods, as well as the great lodges of the Pacific Northwest. The interior of the club boasts a fir paneled Living Room for cocktails and private events, an intimate bar looking down the ninth fairway, a mixed grill overlooking the range and Mt. Hood beyond, and a Men’s Grill with separate lounge adjoining the soaring wings of the locker room. The golf level below features an unusual covered golfer’s drop off and staging area recognizing that golf is often played in the rain in the Pacific Northwest. The auto court surrounds a rose garden indicative of The City of Roses 20 miles the north. A large event lawn is on the west of the clubhouse with a modest swim and tennis facility beyond.

David H. Murdock’s Sherwood Country Club, less than one hour from Los Angeles, is a 1,990 acre development over looking Lake Sherwood—a legendary getaway for Hollywood. There, in the shadows of the Santa Monica Mountain, the 54,000 square foot Tidewater Georgian clubhouse features limitless views of the Jack Nicklaus Championship Golf Course. The richly appointed clubhouse includes a board room, library and parlor, a conservatory, a formal dining room , private dining rooms, and an informal mixed grill—appointed with furniture, millwork, antiques and accessories recalling 18th century America and England. The project features the finest materials available today including Brazilian cherry parquet floors, British axminister carpets, African mahogany millwork, and marble and granite floors, counters and showers and natural slate roof. Mr. Murdock personally directed the landscape development, relocating age-old oaks rescued from the fairways and excavations to line the entry drive and frame the clubhouse—creating a timeless setting from opening day. The interiors of the clubhouse were done in collaboration with Image Design of Atlanta.

Interlachen Country Club was originally built in 1911 in the Arts & Crafts style of English Tudor—characteristically including half timber, massive hammer trusses, wattle & daub, brick noggin and steep gable roofs of Henry VIII and William Shakespeare. The club is intimately linked to the history of golf from Bobby Jones’s infamous ‘lily pad’ shot that cinched his Grand Slam in 1930 to Patty Berg’s successful career that signaled the rise of women’s golf and hosted Walker Cup matches in 1993 where the US ran away 19 to 5.The 1996 clubhouse remodel was followed quickly by the victorious 2002 Solhiem Cup and 63rd U.S. Women’s Open. The remodeling raised the roofline to create a soaring Great Tudor Hall that acts as a living room for the new member’s dining room and a new voluminous banquet hall for club events overlooking the golf course and finishing hole.

The Country Club is the second club at Castle Pines, just up the hill from The Golf Club that has hosted The International every August for years. High on the sandstone bluff, the Grill chimney dominates the landscape for miles around. The Nicklaus signature course starts high on the bluff and finishes well below the clubhouse. The clubhouse mimics historic Colorado ranch houses with its locally quarried rhyolite stone walls and board-and-batt siding. The initial clubhouse was designed to be expanded to the south as the membership matures, adding a dining room and the potential for a banquet room on the initial grill and lockers provided. Both locker rooms were designed to be easily expanded as the membership grows to full compliment.

THE AURARIA HIGHER EDUCATION CENTER includes three state schools—The University of Colorado-Denver, Metropolitan State College and the Community College of Denver on 164 acres with a total cost of $80M. Over three years I worked consecutively for the Design Offi ce on the Site Master Plan; the Construction Management Offi ce as Project Engineer on three MSC Build-ings, as well as the renovation of St. Cajetan and the Emanuel Chapel; and as a facilities planner for the Educational Planning Offi ce.FINE ARTS RENOVATION—UNIVERSITY OF COL-ORADO, BOULDER, a renovation of the north half of the old brick engineering labs with saw tooth clerestoried roof. Uses included Art Museum, collection storage, 160 seat auditorium, photog-raphy labs, painting studio, teacher and graduate studios, outdoor Ceramics kilns and administra-tive offi ces. Fine Arts was demolished in 2008 for
the new Visual Arts Complex.UNIVERSITY HALL RENOVATION—UNIVERSITY OF DENVER included fi ve humanities depart-ments, graduate student studies and the Lovell Thomas museum. The building was originally designed by noted Denver architect Robert S. Roeschlaub in 1890.THE SOLAR TEACHING LABS—UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, COLORADO SPRINGS built in 19?8 was the fi rst passive solar building designed on a institutional scale. Strategies included solar clerestory preheating, ground loop cooling, heat recovery fume hoods, and daylighting. As a staff architect with EZTH, I developed the laboratories

NORTHSTAR VILLAGE RETAIL EastWest Partner’s redevelopment of Northstar ski area near Lake Tahoe in northern California included a $130M mixed use base village of 100 luxury condominiums over a European style pedestrian plaza with 80,000 sf of retail over underground parking. As an aid to the operator’s retail leasing effort, OZ Architecture created profile sheets for 69 retail spaces ranging in size from 1,000 to 4,000 sf. OZ described each space in terms of location, size, street front, construction constraints, utility service and signage. OZ worked with a variety of tenants and their designers including Starbucks, Healy Hansen, Oakley, NorthFace, a variety of local merchants and skier services.
FLYING HORSE OFFICES located on the north side of Colorado Springs is a 26 acre parcel with seven buildings totaling 176,000 sf ranging in size from 15,000 to 60,000 square feet with surface and sub-grade parking. The buildings were developed in a Tuscan vernacular to recall Colorado Spring’s iconic style established by The Broadmoor in the 1920’s.
CITY GATE ultimately may extend over two and a half city blocks. It is located just south of the Olympic plaza redevelopment area proposed west of downtown. The first block of City Gate as proposed will include 34,000 sf of retail and restaurants on grade, 107,000 sf of two story commercial office space above, a 100 room business hotel, all served by surface and sub-grade parking for 536 cars. The proposed style is a blend of high-style commercial loft space, and the Mediterranean stucco and tile of The Broadmoor.

Tucson Mountain Foothills “LOMAS” was a more modest hundred unit housing parcel in south-west Tucson at the eastern gateway to Saguaro National Monument. My role was more inclusive including site analysis, conceptual planning and development report for a low density desert hous-ing on the shoulders of protected foothill ridges deeply cut with washes.
Gage Davis prepared the master plan for DESERT HIGHLANDS while I was completing the clubhouse with WZA. When I joined GDA, I assisted Gage with finishing up the elements of site develop-ment including creating site specific “opportunity plans” for each home site, as well as developing various architectural elements that added value to lots that did not face the golf course. THE TENNIS COMPOUND clustered homesites around two semi-recessed grass courts well back from the golf course—we designed the courts and the first pro-totype house. Gage worked closely with the City of Scottsdale to establish new standards for hillside development that set the bar for golf development in the desert southwest for years to come. Both
ULI and ASLA recognized his efforts with awards.

Sustainable design under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program has been recognized by developers as a viable amenity as well as the right thing to do.
THE VILLAGE AT NORTHSTAR is the first resort village in the nation to become LEED Certified Prior to construction, the project went through a nearly four-year process to address environmental and community concerns. As a result, the Northstar design satisfied more than 130 conditions to protect water quality and other natural resources, while complementing and improving the Lake Tahoe region.
Up the hill from the Village at Northstar is the RITZ CARLTON HIGHLANDS HOTEL, RITZ RESIDENCES AND RITZ CLUB campus also LEED Certified.
THE WESTIN RIVERFRONT RESORT & SPA at the base of Beaver Creek in Avon opened in 2009 --LEED Certified.
The UCCS SOLAR TEACHING LABORATORY at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs was completed in the ‘80s, well before LEED and the current sustainable era. A team of nationally renowned consultants applied cutting edge technologies --ground source cooling, daylighting, solar eyebrows, and heat-recovery to one of the first commercial scale structures of what was known then as The Solar Age.
