Where is Kyoto?
Kyoto is on the central part of the island of Honshu
(500km from Tokyo), nearby Osaka, Hyogo, Nara,
Shiga, Fukui and Mie prefectures in Japan, and a major
part of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area. The
beautiful city is known for the capital of Japan and the
residence of the Emperor for over a thousand years,
from 794 until the Meiji Restoration in 1868 when the
capital was moved to Tokyo. Also known as the cultural
heart of Japan, with temples, shrines and traditional
wooden houses, its cultural and historical heritages have
been attracting many tourists from all over the world.
The city is also home to the headquarters of worldfamous companies leading Japanese industries.
Where is Doshisha University?
The Imadegawa campus islocated in the heart of Kyotocity, north of the Kyoto Imperial Palace (Kyoto Gosho)
and just in front of the renowned Shokoku-Ji temple,
Imadegawa campus is the birthplace of Doshisha
University and itself a historic landmark for over 137
years. The beautiful campus with redbrick buildings
contrasting with the green of surrounding trees which
consists 5 important cultural assets and 2 registered
tangible cultural properties, are used for lectures and
services. Studying at such learning environment where
the origin of Japanese history and culture lies provides
great intercultural experiences to students.
The Kyotanabe campus is located in southern Kyoto.
The vast campus (79,000m) is blessed with the rich
natural surroundings of green mountains. The campus
is also equipped with the newest information facilities.

Doshisha University
Doshisha University, founded as Doshisha Eigakko (Doshisha Academy)
in 1875 by Joseph Hardy Neesima, the first Japanese citizen to have
obtained an academic degree at Amherst College in America, is renowned
as one of the most highly esteemed educational institutions with the longest
history and tradition in Japan. Ever with a deep and unwaveringloyalty to
the founders spirit, today Doshisha University conducts all its education
and research activities based on Christian principles, liberalism andinternationalism as the three pillars of its ideal visions for higher education
Doshisha University has grown to be one of the major universities in Japan,
with 13 Faculties, 16 Graduate Schools, and it currently accommodates
as many as nearly 30,000 students, including about 1,200 international
students from around the world. Today an increasing number of academic
agreements offer students more opportunities to take part in overseas
exchanges and help to further strengthen existing academic and research
links with overseas institutions.
Doshisha University has established new courses (The Institute

What is International Center? What is Center for Japanese Languageand Culture?International Center has two divisions: Office of International Affairs and Office of International Students.
Office of International Students, International Center is in charge of affairs related to: examinations for InternationalStudents, visa, scholarships, accommodations, and international students liaison.
Office of International Affairs is in charge of affairs related to: agreement with international institutions overseas,international projects, sending students to study abroad, events related to international exchange.
Center for Japanese Language and Culture is in charge of affairs related to: offering Japanese language and culturesubjects to international students, admission and administration for Bekka program, Japanese language pre-training forMEXT Scholarship recipients (graduate level), and Japanese studies students Course for MEXT Scholarship recipients(undergraduate level).
About the Center for Japanese Language and Culture (CJLC)ObjectiveDoshisha University, Center for Japanese Language and Culture was established to provide all international students witheffective Japanese language education and Japanese studies.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the Center handles affairs regarding education and learning, and life support,for Exchange students from Doshisha-partner institutions, International students of AKP (Associated Kyoto Program)Center, Tbingen University Center for Japanese Language, Stanford Center for Technology and Innovation, and KyotoConsortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS).

Students of Preparatory Japanese Language Program learn Japanese language and Japanese traditional culturein accordance with the special curriculum designed by the Center for Japanese Language and Culture.
MEXT Scholarship StudentsJapanese studies studentsAccredited by MEXT, Center for Japanese Language and Culture serves as a host institution for Japanese studiesstudents (MEXT scholarship students), who are enrolled in overseas Japanese language-related undergraduatecourses. The Center offers those students a special program of Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japaneseculture for a period of one year starting from September.
Short Program ParticipantsSummer Session, etc.Center for Japanese Language and Culture offers summer session (Short-time Intensive Japanese Language and CultureProgram) to International students who wish to study abroad only for a short-period. The Center offers the program thatenables those students effectively learn Japanese language and culture or life and culture in Kyoto, for the period of 3weeks.
Students of Doshisha-affiliated centers AKP, Tbingen, Stanford, KCJSAs research bases for Japanese language and culture, four of the overseas centers of our partner-institutions* arehoused on Doshisha campus. The Intensive Japanese Language Program Bekka
Center for Japanese Language and Culture is in charge of Bekka Program, and of the affairs related to the examina-tion, and the educational, learning and life support.The Intensive Japanese Language Program Bekka , established in April 1999, offers well-developed Japanese
language education that enables International students to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. Mostof these students (Privately-financed International students) intend to pursue further education at undergraduateprograms and graduate schools in Japan.The enrollment period of the Bekka Program is one year. As the Center has adopted semester system, students canstart the program from either Spring semester (April-September) or Fall semester (September-March).Students of the Bekka Program are able to register for classes such as Japanese Language Subjects,Japanese / English Seminars, Lectures in Japanese Studies, and Lectures in International Studies.
Exchange Students (University agreements) and studentsaccepted by CJLC Inter-faculty agreementsExchange students from Doshisha-partner institutions and studentsaccepted by CJLC Inter-faculty agreements referred to as students ofCenter for Japanese Language and Culture , are able to attend allclasses offered by the Center. They are also entitled to use the samefacilities as Regular students at Doshisha University.Thosewho obtained scores better than a certain level on JapanesePlacement Test after arrival are allowed to attend lectures at under-graduate / graduate programs other than the classes JapaneseLanguage Subjects , Japanese / English Seminars, Lectures inJapanese Studies and Lectures in International Studies offered bythe Center.

Japanese government (MEXT) has officially accredited DoshishaUniversity Center for Japanese Language and Culture as a NationalJapanese Language Institute (Japanese-Language TrainingInstitution).National Japanese Language Institute is an Intensive Japanese-Language Training Institution that provides International students(graduate level) recommended by Japanese government withappropriate preparatory studies for the period of 6 months prior totheir enrollment in upper programs.

1. Structure(1) Japanese language courses are divided into 9 different levels: elementary, upper elementary,
pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, pre-advanced, advanced, upper advanced and
high advanced. The courses are instructed with careful and pinpoint precision, and are arranged to
flexibly meet the diversified needs of international students. Intensive Course is for students whowish to focus on learning Japanese language and Elective Course is for students for whomlearning Japanese is not the main purpose.
(2) A wide range of Japanese studies on Japanese language, culture and society, and lectures in
International studies, as well as Japanese and English seminars are scheduled in the afternoon.
(3) Several subjects provide students with the opportunity to learn Japanese traditional cultures;
calligraphy, flower arrangement, tea ceremony and Shrine festivals, by making excellent use of our
location in Kyoto.
(4) Students of CJLC are entitled to use the same facilities as Regular students.
2. Entrance PeriodStudents are able to enroll in the program in either Spring Semester (April-September) or Fall Semester
(September-March).

(1) Curriculum and Credits
The Center offers Japanese language courses, Japanese and English Seminars, Lectures in
Japanese Studies and International Studies.
The Program considers a class that meets two hours once a week (x 15 weeks) as one or two
credits.
(2)Course Description
The Japanese language courses are divided into 9 different levels; elementary, upper elementary,
pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, pre-advanced, advanced, upper advanced and
high advanced. Class allocations will be made on the basis of the Japanese Placement Test (written
/ oral) after arrival.
Intensive Course is designed to developfour basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.The Center also offers the courses that are specifically designed to improve reading comprehension,
written expressions and oral expressions. Those who are taking the Elective Course are
recommended to take two to three subjects from the Japanese Language Courses each semester.
Japanese Language Seminars conducted at different levels of ability enable students to prepare for
Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and Examination for Japanese University Admission
for International Students (EJU). English Language Seminars are designed to help students who
intend to take university entrance exams. Lecture series in Japanese Studies contribute to students
understanding of the Japanese language, culture and society. Several subjects are offered to assist
students to achieve a swift adjustment to life in Japan and pursue a successful academic career.
International Studies lecture series covers a wide range of academic field including History, Business
and Media. Lectures are partly conducted in languages other than Japanese.
(3)Credit Load
Maximum course credit load is 20 credits.
In some cases, students whose language levels are considered to be sufficient will be allowed to
attend lectures with Japanese students at undergraduate programs or graduate schools. The classes
and subjects that those are allowed to attend will be determined according to their Japaneselanguage abilities. However, seminar classes and specialized subjects are only open to
undergraduate / graduate students.

1. Qualifi cation(1) In accordance with the terms of academic agreements
(2) Applicants are required to have a year-long study in college-level Japanese language prior to the time of application,
or the equivalent.
2. Application Period
The estimated date of issuing the Admission Certificate may be subject to change depending upon applicants submission dates.
3. Documents to be submitted All documents (excluding the prescribed forms) must be written in either Japanese or English.
(1) A letter of approval for the exchange program by the applicants home institution

(4) Official Letter of Recommendation (academic reference) from a faculty member of the applicants home institution

(color, 4cm3cm, full-faced, uncapped, a plain background. Digital photographs are unacceptable.)

(8) Documents certifying financial ability
The following documents are necessary to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence.
Living expenses for one academic year in Japan are expected to be 1,200,000 yen at the very least. (More than 600,000
yen for one semester) (at least 100,000 yen per month)
Applicants are required to demonstrate proof of sufficient financial resources available.
Korean applicants must submit Census registration. (We would like to know your name in official chinese character)

5. After the submissionStaff of the Office of International Students will first review all documents to ensure that your application is complete, followed by
the selection procedure.
Those who are deemed as insufficiently proficient for the program are advised to learn Japanese language prior to the enrollment.
6. After being admittedThe Office of International Students will send accepted applicants Admission Certificate and detailed instructions on coming to
Japan to the coordinator of the applicants home institution. After Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence is issued, our
office will send the certificate and other necessary documents for your stay in Japan (dormitory information etc.) to the coordinator
of applicants home institution. Students are required to complete the following procedure to obtain a visa immediately upon
receiving the documents.
Visa procedure
Doshisha University will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence on behalf of the applicant. We will send it to
the coordinator of the applicants home institution as soon as it is issued. Please bring the Certificate of Eligibility to the nearest
Japanese Embassy / Consulate to obtain a College Student (Ryuugaku) visa before the given deadline.
You should complete obtaining your VISA by your departure.
7. Arrival Admission (Pick-Up Service / Orientation for international students)
Students are requested to arrive in Japan on the date appointed by Doshisha University. Students are able to move into the
accommodation upon arrival.
We will send Doshisha Volunteer Students to Kyoto Station to welcome exchange students, and to guide them to their
accommodations.
An entrance ceremony and orientation session for new International students will be held. (Confirmed information regarding the
ceremony and session will be included in the documents you receive with Admission Certificate.)
8. Course registrationExchange students are accepted as students of Center for Japanese Language and Culture and study according to the
curriculum offered by the Center. In some cases, students who earn excellent scores on Japanese Placement Test will be
allowed to attend lectures at undergraduate or graduate programs within the terms and conditions. However, seminar classes or
specialized subjects are only open to undergraduate and graduate students.
9. NotesFor those who enroll in the program in accordance with CJLC inter-faculty exchange agreements with Doshisha partnerinstitutions as Exchange students, the application procedure may vary. Students who intend to enroll in the program privately are
required to read Guide for the Intensive Japanese Language Program Bekka or Summer Session (Japanese Language and
Culture Program) for details. Alternatively, those who wish to enroll in the upper programs (faculties or graduate schools), please
refer to the Admissions Guide for International Undergraduate / Graduate Students.
10. Tuition FeesExchange students are exempt from tuition fees under the agreement. Please contact your home institutions for further information.
Extra credit fees may vary between undergraduate and graduate schools.

1. VISAExchange students must obtain a College Student (Ryuugaku) visa to study in Japan. Doshisha University will apply for a
Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence on the student behalf.
You should complete obtaining your VISA by your departure.
2. Scholarships(1) JASSO International Student Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan
The scholarship offered by JASSO (Japanese Student Services Organization) is available for those who have
outstanding academic records. Exchange students will be provided 80,000 yen per month up to 12 months. Number of
grantees may be subject to change. (* 25 grantees in 2012)
To apply for the Scholarship, please fill in the required form and submit it to the Office of International Students by the
given deadline. We will select qualified applicants and recommend them to JASSO who will make the final decision
upon the scholarship applications.
(2) Special Scholarship agreement with partner institutionsThe terms of scholarship agreements may vary depending upon Doshisha-partner institutions. Students are required to
contact the coordinator of their home institutions for further details.
3. Living ExpensesThe average monthly living expenses in Kyoto are approximately 100,000 yen per month.
Before applying for the exchange program, it is important to make sure you have sufficient funds available.
4. AccomodationsWe will provide accommodations to exchange students. In case that students wish to look for their own places, please be
sure to inform the Office of International Students in advance.
5. The National Health Insurance ProgramCompulsoryThe National Health Insurance Program designed to meet some of the costs of medical treatment for illness and injury,allowing subscribers to seek medical care free from financial concerns. All International students residing in Japan for more
than 3 months are required to enroll in the program. Students must pay insurance premiums, but are then only required to
pay 30% of actual expenses incurred at medical care facilities by showing health insurance card. Though the premium
insurance differs in some communities, the National health Insurance usually covers up to 70% of medical expenses for
International students with no income. (It will be determined on an annual basis. Students are required to report their
previous years income to your local ward or city office.)
For International students residing in Kyoto, the annual fee for the National Health Insurance was 13,755 yen in 2012.
One year Exchange students can apply for the subsidy half a year later for the first 6 months of your payment of the National
Health Insurance. The subsidy from Kyoto City is 4,200yen (700yen per month) for 6 months.
